NFL  > Cleveland Browns  > Browns again bad. Whaddya think ManKok's plan should be for 2010 ?
October 25, 2009, 05:43 PM
Another cruel season in Cleveland. I know that '09 is not yet half over, but, IMHO, Cleveland Browns football is bad. Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. Hopefully, they may begin to show some small quantum of improvement soon, but thoughts naturally become those of the "what the hell can be done?" variety. What should the short term '09 plan be? I say put people in who haven't played, eg, Robiskie, and see what you've got. Who do ya draft in 2010, assuming the Browns have a top 5 pick? QB? CB? Obama? Bono? Wide open, here. What do you think? Comments of the just-nuke-cleveland-and-fill-in-lake-erie variety have all been heard, children.

There's obviously a problem in the management side of the Browns. If you look at every team that continually lose, you'll find problems in the front office. In this case, the Lerners had better start by looking in the mirror. Rich guys don't like to think that they're the problem, but if they want to bring a winner to Cleveland, that's where they have to start. Bring in a guy who knows football, ala Parcells, and then hand him the keys, stay out of it and watch your investment grow.

Yep.

Bad bad and worse Makes the last regime look much better than the current fire them all let Kosar select new perrsonel to replace them all. This Team is a REMINDER OF WHAT Ted stepien did to the cavs.

I think we need to trade Joe Thomas to the Jets for a special teams player and some draft picks...../sarcasm off

In the off season make an "f"ing decision on the QB position, pick either BQ, DA, or draft a qb and get rid of the other(s). With our top 5 draft pick its wide open there are very few positions that we don't need help at. Look into getting a new Offensive cordinator, really 1 wildcat formation with Cribbs the whole game?

A very good point. Three weeks ago, I made a post that no one had the nerve to face the truth and respond to. Here it is pasted below.

.....A "Silver Spoon" owner that doesn't care about football or hold leadership accountable....

This is the leadership I am talking about.

# Owner ??? Randy Lerner

# President ??? Mike Keenan
# Senior Vice President ??? Lewis Merletti
# Vice President of Football Administration ??? Dawn Aponte

It starts here. These are the people that give "Little Randy" the advice about what to do or when to do it. More than likely, they have free reign, and Learner is hands off and no more than a figure head.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a very successful small market team, and have been with very few low points for many decades. I think Randy needs to study their business model and adopt it as his own. Anything short of this just proves that he doesn't care about the team and doesn't have the drive to do what it takes to make a winner. At this point, just post a sign that says.......

................................FOR SALE........................

I don't think Al Learner would have let it get this bad. Don't boo the team, but boo the upper management.

good teams start at the top, with the owner/manager. then hc, then qb. 3/4 are terrible.=bad football team

Bernie is to unstable to be put in a position of such responsibility. A decision to put him in charge would be an emotional decision, not a good business decision. I like it, GO BERNIE!!!

Lerner needs to attract a Parcells or somehow coax Bill Cowher to come to Cleveland and give them complete control of the team. Mangini is just another one of Belichick's cronies whose overall coaching ability was inflated. If ManKok really wanted to rebuild this team they would have done a better job in the draft. I don't mind his trading down theory to get Mack, but the second round picks (3) that we had were squandered. I have a good feeling that the 11 picks we have next year will be wasted again.

I think we should be looking for Taylor Mays or Ndamukong Suh with our top 5 pick in the draft. We need to start acquiring leaders to this team because that is what it lacks. Our offense has no leader, nor does our defense.

As I pointed out last week, our defense didn't match up well against their pass oriented offense. So what did they do, they rushed for over 200 yds. They maintained their average of over 11 yds. per catch. They rushed for nearly 5 yds per run. Bottom line, GB was a better team than a .600 team going into Sundays game, and we didn't stand much of a chance of winning, but we should have scored more than 3 points.

The 1st position that needs filled is one that is currently vacant. It is that of offensive coordinator. I would even be happy if we brought back Lindy Infante. We need an expert, a professional, not someone hoping they can be successful. This is a position that has not been properly filled since Infante left to pursue his desire to be a head coach.

QB is the next position that needs filled. For some reason, possibly some underling reason that is not being revealed to the public, Quinn is not being given a fair shot. I would guess that this reason is being kept quiet so as not to "devalue" Quinn so he can be traded. Anderson has no value except possibly as an emergency backup. I think we need to dump all QB's currently on the roster and sign a free agent or trade for a quality QB. There are also quite a few decent QB's to select from in the draft. Possibly Sam Bradford (OU) or Case Keenum (Hou). We will be able to trade out of the top of the draft and make an excellent pick in the middle of the 1st rd. After that, we need to trade "UP" to pick the "best available athletes" for the O line and anywhere on the D. Our needs are many, no need to target specific positions.

All very good points. I agree with your read on Belichick's underlings. I also think both of your draft selections fit the "best available" scenario.

I don't think there is "A Parcells" other than Parcells himself. To get Cower would involve breaking the bank with a record breaking contract, and yes, giving him free rein. A move like this would prove that Learner actually does care about the win/loss, and not just bleeding all he can out of the team

October 27, 2009  01:54 PM ET

I don't think that Cower would come to Cleveland, no matter what kind of contract that they try to give him. I think that he has too much respect for the Steelers' ownership, team and fans. I think that Mangini can work things out, still. he was obviously upset with Daboll over the playcalling Sunday. He called him out at the press conference, and was chewing his ear on the sideline during the game. The OC is either the worst that Cleveland has ever had, or the players are just not ready. During the Buffalo game they ran the same running play up the middle probably 15 times. Against the Packers, it was try to throw deep on first down, run up the middle, try for the long 3rd down play, and then punt. Not exactly hard for the defense to figure out. Where's the creativity or diversity amongst in the play calling?

October 27, 2009  02:24 PM ET

Start over, get a new staff from top to bottom fire everyone, trade the few good players you have for draft picks and design a 5 year plan and stick to it.

Mike Holmgren comes to mind. It's too late to try and patch this thing up, follow the Dolphins lead and get a Parcells type leader and start over.

You guys were the original come back kids with Brian Sipe, this is a great franchise you just need to get people in charge that will stay in Cleveland and make a commitment to the team.

You need a fighter for a head coach, why not go to USC and get Ken Norton Jr? He'd be perfect for this franchise.

Why not play Francies, Veikune, Robiske, Rubin, Harrison, and Hall? Let's assess them. We know what Bowens, McDonald, Lewis, Coleman and others can do and it isn't helping the Browns this year. Trade Quinn and/or Anderson, perhaps to the Panthers with a draft pick for J. Stewart. Do not pick a QB in the first round! It usually doesn't work out unless its Manning or Roethlisberger. Get some skill at the skill positions! Finally, what is with the 3-4 defense? I thought it was vanilla and boring and ineffective under Crennelephant. I thought Ryan was going to be creative. It is useless. There is no creativity. Blitz your outside backers from different spots instead of blitzing Wimbley from the right side and dropping the other backer into the coverage. It is too easy for the other teams.

From a Steeler fan:
We miss the rivalry meaning something! In fact it doesn't exist with this generation of fans.

IMO:
STOP lamenting over Bellichek. How many bad coaches have you guys suffered with just to get a piece of the coach you ran out of town who went on to succeed with the Patriots. Obsession leads to bad and hasty decisions. That era is over.

STOP bringing back the past. Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar are gone. Happy memories for you but still not part of the team anymore.

STOP obsessing over QBs. First they are just getting their careers and bodies destroyed. A QB w/o all the other pieces in place is just a tackling dummy.

DO the following:
Draft nothing but defense. Focus on one side of the ball when rebuilding-the side that wins in January-D! Look what the Raven's did with a so-so offense and QB a few years back. And some of those players (Lewis) are still feared as they age. Learn lessons from your rivals rather than just hating them.

Fill holes on your offensive line and secondary with mid-career veterens. Let them hold the line until in year three you will draft a QB and RB.

Play smash mouth football that the Great Lakes are known for. Stop obsessing over QBs and the long bomb. Gain a reputation for defensive dominance and the free agents will arrive again.

Oh and dump your management......they would have to know all of this and I don't think they have a clue.

How right you are,
They draft a center when you need Defense pass on linbackers, Cornerbacks take two wide recievers in the second round how lame. And now some want to trust all the draft picks to this Clown in 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He completly destroys an offense when you never had a defense to start with so he can draft more offense they just don't get it...
