NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Should The NCAA Punish Spikes For His Dirty Play
November 2, 2009, 11:08 AM
Should the NCAA punish Florida's Brandon Spikes for his attempt to gauge Georgia's Washaun Ealey's eyes in the game last saturday?
November 2, 2009  11:13 AM ET

uhhhh... yahhh

November 2, 2009  11:14 AM ET

I agree. I just wanted to know if my view was swayed since i am a Alabama fan.

November 2, 2009  11:18 AM ET

Suspend him for the season but let him stay with the team.
Then mysteriously think about reinstating him a few weeks later.

November 2, 2009  11:19 AM ET

I'm a Gator fan and dislike dirty play as much as anyone, I think. I would like to hear statements from the two parties involved before I consider a judgement. I understand why people presume an eye gouge, but have trouble seeing exactly what he is doing, or touching. I will say that was 100% that what he was doing was poor sportsmanship and taunting with the intent to intimidate.

If Ealey has any kind of an eye injury, then I say throw the book at him.

NCAA suspension? No.

Meyer suspension for at least one game? Yes. Not tolerable, ESPECIALLY from a team captain/leader.

First, your views are swayed because you're a Bama fan. :)

Second, Crazy Rabbit is no friend of the SEC (and especially UF). You could have asked, "Should Tebow be fined for playing games with the kids at the orphanage?" and got the same answer.

However, I do think Spikes deserves some form of punishment. Not sure what punishment other players have received in the past for the same offense. This can't be the only "eye gouging" offense that has ever been filmed.

November 2, 2009  11:21 AM ET

I am sure Meyer will continue to look at the tapes. If he sees that Spikes was trying to gauge Ealey's eyes, i am sure he will suspend him for a game or two.

November 2, 2009  11:25 AM ET

i misspelt gouge twice! sorry

November 2, 2009  11:28 AM ET

I just read an article saying that this was worse than Blount's cheap shot punch, but i disagree.

After watching the video, this was a guy trying his best with all his strength to shove his fingers into the opponents eyes. I'm sure this happens , but just like Blount, he got caught on TV and video.
At least one game suspension. This was not a 3 Stooges poke in the eye.

As a UGA fan I will say this...the punishment shouldn't be to heavy. The UGA UF game is always a pissed off battle. And playing football myself, i know at the bottom of those piles...worse things than that happen especially in a rivalry game. I'm sure one of our guys did something to Spikes, but the camera just did not catch it...Spikes is unlucky. And may get the book thrown at him, though I don't think he should. This is not cricket.

More importantly, UGA's defense should get read the riot act...that was a joke coming off a bye. Talk about not showing up. And that little dance we did on the 50 yard line after we scored a TD and the "New Black Helmets"...ENOUGH...it was cute and may have worked once. It's done...I'm pretty freaking sure that a Dance and new outfit isn't going to win you the damned game.
The "cuteness" needs to end and we NEED to play better ball...period.

Signed,
Your very pissed off and tired of loosing rivalry games UGA fan.

LOL! You beat me to it...

This infraction is exactly what the tauntlet is for...

Only USC players draw a paycheck, so I don't think a fine is feasible for Tebow.

Right. Forgot about that.

Unfortunately, below-belt ethics is all too common in the trenches. Only difference is it is exposed a lot more these days thanks to better camera work.

Just bc I have pointed out your fav team's weaknesses and some misconceptions about your conf does not mean I am an SEC disliker. I've pointed out many conf's/team's problems.

I've bashed Cal and Colorado.

I just today posted 'Crazy Bottom 8'. I included Wash St but not Vanderbilt (which I could have due to their loss to Army).

If you go back to pg 20 you'll see where I started the 'Blount Needs To Go' thread - about 30 seconds after the punch.
Did I start a 'Spikes Needs To Go' thread?

Your restraint is incredible, given your PO'ed status, Ramone. I am impressed to say the least.

I still think it's deserving of "at least" suspension from the coaching staff. Players have to know that type of action cannot be tolerated. What if it had happened on a critical play, and he got a 15-yard unsportsmanlike, and it eventually cost us the game, which could cost huge in the polls, etc., etc.?

November 2, 2009  12:08 PM ET

Well, SOMETHING has to be done. Otherwise Meyer/theSEC/the NCAA will be inadvertently encourating Moe Howard antics.

November 2, 2009  12:09 PM ET

Sorry, I meant to say Curly antics.
