Jay Triano
Don Nelson
Mike Brown

Jay plays a pg that can't shoot in late game situations to lose attainable games

Don Nelson is actually a horrible coach. Hear me out on this those of you screaming at your screen. He plays sgs and pgs at the 1,2,3, and 4. He TELLS them to run and play no defense. He had Stephen Jackson, Monta Ellis, Corey Maggette, Biedrins, Jamaal Crawford, Anthony Randolph, Morrow ( I think), and Turiaf and they didn't even come CLOSE to making the playoffs. The freakin raptors were 33 - 49 and the Warriors were 29 - 53. don't be fooled, just because he didn't get fired doesn't mean he is a good coach. Acie Law at the 3? Come on.

Mike Brown doesn't coach period. The plan is to let LBJ get the bal and do whatever he feels like. That or the everyone clear out to the side scorners and wait for the ball to shoot a three. No coaching involved.

Mike brown will be fired after this year if the cavs do not win a championship

November 3, 2009  03:21 PM ET

Most overrated coach: Doc Rivers.

November 3, 2009  03:43 PM ET

Mike Brown is definitely the most overrated coach. He knows nothing about running an offense, however is a good Defensive coach.............. Just like star said, his gameplan consists of giving Lebron the ball and praying that he'll somehow beat 5 other players while the rest of the team stands around.....

He was awful last year in the playoffs vs Orlando. He couldn't even make the necessary adjustments to at least slow down ORL's offense. If the cavs win anything it's not because of Brown, but more of Lebron

November 3, 2009  05:54 PM ET

I agree about Mike Brown...he is not that special.

Put a Riley or Jackson in there and watch that team win a title.

How can you say that? Not just he won a ring just 2 years ago, he completely out-coached the zen master!

And don't get me started on Phill. I don't buy the hype. he won plain and simply because he had MJ and Kobe&Shaq (Pau).

I agree that Doc Rivers is one of the best coaches in the league--look what he did with Orlando a few years back and now with Boston these past few years.

Phil has had some of the best players ever to work with. However, compare his results to Kurt Rambis and Del Harris who coached LA with arguably more talent around Kobe and Shaq before Phil arrived...and they got almost nowhere in the playoffs.

I think many underestimate Phil Jackson's defensive and offensive coaching. IMO, Jackson and Doc Rivers (along with Greg Poppovich) are the greatest current coaches in the league.

Best Coaches

Phil Jackson
Greg Poppovich
Jerry Sloan
Rick Aldeman
Stan Van Gundy
* Doc Rivers

( don't personally think much of him because he has one of the best teams)
Those of you that don't thnik Rick should be on the list are uninformed. He was the guy that always came second to Phil Jackson wether in the LAker - Sacramento series way back, or the Laker Houston series. Look at him now, the Rockets are 2-1 with a team with no superstar. They are the only team without a star other than Charlotte that is actually playing well.

Stan is an excellent coach, look at how he alters his plans to beat eams. ( Ex. Cleveland series). I HAAAATE coaches that call timeouts only to TELL their players " you guys aren't playing defense, come on!" bla blah blah. They don;t TELL them how to play their defensive plan to beat the other team. Mike Brown is that kind of no-plan coach. He just yells at the players ( excluding LeBron) and leaves it like that.

November 4, 2009  04:11 PM ET

* Meant to say the Rockets have no star but are looking good.

November 4, 2009  04:13 PM ET

Eric Spolestra is also ****. He just tells Wade to play.
Lawrence Frank is pretty bad also. I think Don Nelson is they worst though. Look at his team last year. 29 - 53?

November 4, 2009  04:16 PM ET

Another thing. If- no when a team doesnt play D its on a coach to make them do so. The Magic weren't so good at D until they got Stan, the Rockets have unknown, undersized players playing excellent defense. Utah also. Boston doesn't count because they only play D with KG around. ( Look at last year playoffs.)

November 4, 2009  04:20 PM ET

As a Bulls fan its Vinnie Del Negro. I know they made the playoffs but seeing that teams lack of defence, poor time out management and garbage half court sets makes me long for a real coach.

November 5, 2009  05:30 PM ET

I actually like Vinnie the Negro, Chicago looked good against the Spurs a couple days ago

he is a rookie coach so there is not much to hold him to. now if he does not improve this season i think he should be criticized.

November 5, 2009  06:16 PM ET

He was there during the infamous Boston - Chicago series. He must of displayed excellent coaching to make Boston have such a hard time against the Windy City

Having KG, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen makes your job a hell of a lot easier. Just because ESPN says Doc Rivers is a good coach doesn't mean that he is.

I don't buy the argument that some coach was good only because he had great players. You never see a team win championships without having a great team--either some of the top talent in a few players or a well-rounded team. The thing that separates the goods from the greats are what coaches do with the talented squads they get. This is where championships come into play. Boston may have huge talent with KG, Pierce, Allen, Rondo, and now Wallace. But Doc Rivers is coaching them better than most coaches in the league could. The Lakers and the Bulls has basically the same team before Phil arrived but he turned both teams into winners. That's my basic knock on Mike Brown--a good coach, but certainly not great until he proves he can win with one of the most talented rosters in the league with one of the 2 best players in the league.

I agree look at Golden State last year. Even in the west they could have at least made the playoffs.
Don Nelson = Epic Fail

LOL sorry... couldn't pay attentiuon to your ramble because I was looking at your avatar :)

Nah, I disagree with you.
he got the talent, but he made them play well together. How many coaches get talent and still can't make them complement each other?

He outcoached Phil 2 years ago. Plain and simple. And Phil also had talent on his hands.

And just because ESPN agreed with me does not mean I am wrong. It means they got it right once :)

You won't hear me defending Nelson. I've had it with this loser, He's nothing but a washed up drunk. Defense isn't in his vocabulary, why does Warrior management love this guy, i'd love to see the Warriors bring in some college coach to teach these guys the fundamentals which Nelson has forgot. I used to love watching college basketball when teams would set plays up and run them. Now everything is run and shoot, no strategy.

Mike D'Antoni should be added to my list. The run and gun thing was a 05' thing he needs to find a new coaching strategy.
