If you win the belt you are the champ. Defence or not, you are the champ.

Of course, if you take into the context of who said it first (Matt Hughes), I understand why. But those people repeating it (FG, Machida) are wrong.

If you beat the Champ you are the Champ. how long you hold the belt for is another catagory

How many people die every year in football and hocky? Dozens. How many deaths in MMA (total, since it's inception including unsanctioned events)? Three.
