MMA  > General MMA  > Where do they stand?

Its often discussed who was better when PRIDE was at it's peak, but what is rarely discussed is when PRIDE was young whether they were better than the UFC. Lets say around PRIDE 8, Igor Vovchanchyn had just beaten Kerr to become the unofficial PRIDE HW king and Kazushi Sakuraba had just beaten Royler Gracie and was dominating their Middleweight division. Meanwhile the UFC was having an event within months also in Japan and crowned Kevin Randleman their champion, and Frank Shamrock was their middleweight champion. Well fannation, which organization was the better of the two back then?

I'll start it off. First off, I think this is more difficult to judge than the days when PRIDE had Fedor and Nog at HW and Wand at MW and the UFC had Couture and Sylvia and Chuck and Tito. Pride was clearly better then. Sakuraba vs Frank would have been a great match, I would have to pick Saku by armbar. I think Igor would have beaten Randleman early by KO or late by TKO after surviving some g'n'p and exhausting Randleman.

At its peak I believe Pride had the better fighters at HW, LHW & MW Hands down.

But this topic is about PRIDE before it's peak.

Clouis, I know your age, all this happend like before you were born. what did you get all the DVD's?

November 3, 2009  01:24 PM ET

Clousi, can you discuss the NFL in the 80's? How about hairbands? Thoughts?

November 3, 2009  01:24 PM ET

As for the question. Pride.

Actually, yes:) I bought the PRIDE legacy series that has all of the PRIDE events from 1-28, but with a few missing (i think 10,19,24). It was a great investment when I didn't have high speed internet to watch all the old important fights.

Ahh, no. Are you trying to be a prick or making a failed attempt at humor. Either way it is neither productive nor appreciated.

Dude, you know what your problem is? You have no sense of humor, and are way to sensitive. Learn to take a joke, it will help in life.

And go get a GF, seriously.

well, I don't know. I joined the world of TV-MMA way after Pride was over and done with.
Most Pride fight I saw was thanks to the Internet.
So I have no clue about this quesiton.

Sorry, I didn't take it as a joke because you rarely joke on these boards. If someone else had said it I would have reacted in a different manner, but you are usually serious and kind of rude.

This is great news... but do you think they would air, for instances, Fedor fights?

Thats a good point, I never thought of that.

November 3, 2009  03:46 PM ET

For me this is a funny question in the sense that I have always followed most MMA leagues.

I was already watching MMA (several organizations including the UFC, RINGS, IVC, WVC, Meca, etc) when PRIDE came along.

Then it became clear, around 2000, that PRIDE FC was the world's #1 MMA organization.

My friends were always watching PRIDE and saying that the UFC was rubbish. I watched PRIDE but I was also watching UFC and defending it before them.

And now some people say that PRIDE wasn't worth that much (ignorant people) and that the UFC was always #1.

That having been said, from 1999 to 2005/6 PRIDE FC was the biggest and best overall MMA organization in the world.

Zuffa owns most of Fedor's footage (PRIDE FC, Affliction's 2 bouts).

Fedor's RINGS fights are footage that can be used by any organization.

Strikeforce can air RINGS fights and Fedor's fight at Bodog versus Matt Lindland.

I am not getting anywhere with this, am I?

I think Zuffa should air Fedor's fights on Spike TV.

Why?

- Fedor is 33. How many years is he going to keep fighting?

- It's tons of good footage. I don't think SF will be getting that kind of footage from Fedor in the future.

Yes, it can be considered as "free advertising" for a competitor, but I still think they should use and air that footage.
