NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > USC in top 12?.....what a joke!
November 3, 2009, 11:24 AM
I posted this same question on the blog portion but the message board is more active.......I just wanted to post this topic for general feedback from people about USC and their ranking. After losing to a horrible Washington Huskie team their true colors have come out with a pounding by Oregon. They have 2 losses and are still ranked in the top 12! Is their ranking fair or are they holding ground with voters because they are the "darlings" of the west? Presonally I think USC lost their chance and shouldn't be ranked in the top 20....any thoughts?

Many, many thoughts. Thanks for asking.

GO ahead, let him have it. It would be West Coast vs. West Coast T. ;)

This is a frivolous question - of course USC is the highest-ranked 2-loss team. Is anyone surprised? They are probably the best 2-loss team and better than several 1-loss teams. In terms of priorities, debating the proper standing for USC ranks far behind debating the BCS rankings, my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it.

There are now 10 undefeated and 1 loss majors,
4 undefeated and 1 loss mid majors,
and a dozen 2 loss majors.

Given their schedule, I do not find basis for USC being highly overranked.

Making the case should be easy for you. Just list a large number of teams (well more than a dozen) that should be ranked higher.

That is the point I wanted to make...USC isn't all they seem to be this year....they have been a powerhouse for years but this year is a rebuilding year for Carroll and the trojans (they lose many people a year for the NFL). You can't blame Carroll for sending so many kid to the pros but the loss at Oregon clearly demonstrated the evident weak spots on the USC team. If they truly were ranked in the top 5 like they were last week they shouldn't have gotten slaughtered in the manner they did. Sure top 5 teams fall from week to week...but they don't get slaughtered like the Oregon game. This is what tells me that USC isn't a top 12 team.

I agree with RollTide that this is a frivilous question. But as there is a reply on point, I would add that perhaps USC's three road wins against teams currently ranked may be a factor.

To Ute- Why should 2 losses exclude a team from the top 20? Currently, 5 others in the top 20 have 2 losses. If these responses are disappointing, you should FanMail T-Rixi for support.

USC is ranked #11 by the computers.
All six computers agree on the ranking; none of them have USC ranked worse than #12

USC gets less love from the humans: #12 in the harris poll, #13 by the coaches.

As of this week, I would say that USC is as fairly ranked as any team in the BCS. (All three components are in close agreement.)

BCS breakdown

dead money- it' not that I don't think a 2 loss team should be in the top 20...it's the way in which USC lost to Oregon. Any top 5 team can go down but when they do it shouldn't be in the manner in which oregon did. When oklahoma lost their second game they dropped significantly and by their third loss they were unranked (help me out with the stats at this one...I'm going off of memory...correct me if I'm wrong). Now oklahoma is in the top 25 again....USC should drop more and then be able to crawl back with decisive wins in the future. There is still time to do that...but the manner in which USC got slaughtered didnt solidify their ranking last week...or this week.

I agree that USC is fairly ranked at 12 when PSU is 11th.

USC has wins on the road against BCS #16, #20 and #22. They also have a win at home against #34 Oregon State (sagarin ranking)

Utah's best win is a loss to Oregon.

bulls- I never mentioned anything about Utah ????? the thread is about USC (who lost by a whole lot more than utah did)

November 3, 2009  01:13 PM ET

12th seems about right to me given the # of away games the Trojans played and the fact that their starting QB was out for one of the losses. As others have said, it would be hard to justify too many of the teams behind them getting placed in front of them. Houston is about the only one I could argue for that should be in front of USC, but it would be a half-hearted argument given how badly OSU just got trashed.

Hard to see how they can get much higher than about 6th even if they win out and win whatever bowl they get into, so I don't see where the consternation lies in this ranking.

So then what is your beef with USC's ranking?

* I showed that all three components of the BCS agree on USC's current ranking. You had no response.

* I showed that USC has wins on the road against three teams currently ranked in the BCS. You had no response.

* I pointed out that #14 Utah might have a small hole in their resume. You respond.

If you are not a Utah fan, then what is your team?

Which teams ranked 13th and lower do you think could defeat USC on the field? I glanced at the rankings, and no such team jumped out at me.
