MMA  > General MMA  > Whats Next for GSP?
November 4, 2009, 12:00 AM
He has pretty much cleaned out the WW division and the next logical step for him would be a fight with middleweight king Anderson Silva. But with the mashup at MW now, it looks like A. Silva will be tied up for a while. I think there are two compelling matchups for him now. One involves the move to MW and the other involves a title defense against a former MW champion. I think he should fight Ricardo Almeida as soon as "the big dog" is healthy. He is the only one at WW now with the ability to beat GSP on the ground both from his back and if he somehow gets on top of GSP. The other is a fight with Wanderlei Silva if Wand can get past Akiyama at UFC 110. I think Wand presents many problems for GSP, in size and skill. He is big for a 185 lber and has great standing skill and is no Gilbert Yvel form his back. What do you think GSP should do next? One of my scenarios or something completely different?
November 4, 2009  09:03 AM ET

I think your scenarios are nutz. GSP fighting Silva (Wandy) is probably more doable then him fighting Anderson, that being sad, Wandy is still to big and GSP barely weighs 184 between fights. That's a huge difference. Almeida??? When is the last time that dude did anything impressive. I think that GSP would win that one as well. Almedia never was a big MW and GSP is about making mistakes on the ground to give Almedia anything freely.

November 4, 2009  09:25 AM ET

I honestly think GSP should leave UFC and pursue other fighters to challenge him.
Nothing against UFC, but I really don't think anyone in his weightclass in UFC can beat him, and IMO hs is not moving weight.

So instead of stay put and rest on his fane alone, giving some title shots for unworthy opponents, I think he should seak there elsewhere and thus secure his position as best ever.

ok here is my analysis:
Clouis, your crazy brother. GSP will wrestle the s*it out of almeaida and not get caught, fight over. Wandy? I know your a big old school fan and thats cool, but Wandy is a brawler who doesnt even use his Muiy Tai anymore. GSP will keep the distance and pick him apart.

Krypto: agreed

Roni: mr i hate the ufc bro...lol, your funny...nuthin against the ufc but they should fire one of the best p4p? comon bro, dont let your hate of the "EVIL EMPIRE" cloud your opinions.

Almeida is the only WW I see with the BJJ skills to even compete with GSP on the ground. I think this is the best skill set to beat GSP. GSP's wrestling is so good that he son't be challenged by anyone who is primarily a striker with any thing less than a 30+ lbs weight advantage or otherworldly takedown defense. So ones best chance against GSP is to not fight the takedown and use a good guard to either reverse or submit him. As for the reversal part of the previous statement, I don't think he can control GSP so the reversal would be to create and opening for a submission in the transistion like a guillitine or armbar.
Krypto, it seems to me reading your comment that you Wand would be the favorite in this fight. I think Wand won't be too much bigger than 200-202 when he cuts to middleweight. Alves was about the same size. Wand was about 205-210 for the cut to 195 against Franklin and he seemed to be affected by it conditioning wise. I can't see him cutting from 205 for a 185 fight. Just to make something plain, I don't like Almeida for the fight because he's bigger than GSP, I doubt Ricardo cuts very much weight if any to get to 185, so I think he and GSP will be on equal footing size wise. Whoever wins that fight will win because of superior skill. The Wand fight on the other hand is a case where Wand will be bigger and GSP will have probably a better skill advantage so the question is can GSP's skill make up the size difference? And let's not forget that GSP said that he would gain weight if he were to fight at 185, so the size advantage to Wand could be small. I know alot of you guys think someone can only gain like 2-3 lbs of muscle a month but I bet that a super athlete like GSP with a full training camp and proper diet and strength training routine could be about 200 in a few months.

The only way a fighter will beat GSP is if he has very good standup and great takedown defense. Alves' reach was too short to neutralize GSP's great wrestling. That being said, hopefully Rumble makes weight against Koscheck and wins. Then if he makes weight again and beats another high profile fighter I would love to see him fight GSP. Big enough, with great reach and striking, he would just need to work on takedown defense. Alot of IFs, but I think Rumble has the best chance of beating GSP at 170. Hardy or Swick? No way. Alves or fitch re-match - same result.

I like your thinking outside the box but really who is there outside of the UFC for him? The only one that sticks out in my mind is Shields and he is fighting at MW now against another guy who GSP already beat senseless. I think he might have some trouble with Aoki and his tricky rubber guard, but even though Aoki has competed at WW recently he is just too small for that division. Zaromskis might have a shot of connecting with that Cro Cop esque roundhouse, but other than that he will get thrashed by GSP. The way I see it to find competition he will have to go up in weight anyway so why not stay in the UFC and fight an icon who desperatly needs a win to define this stage of his career?

The winner of Kos-Rumble might get an immediate shot or fight Swick or someone who beats him in the near future for #1 contendership.

GSP's current and feasible opponents basically include, in my opinion:

- A rematch with Jon Fitch

- A rematch with Thiago Alves

- A fight with Mike Swick

I don't like the thought of seeing GSP vs Anderson Silva.

I do think Swick is next for a title shot... and he'll get mauled.

LOL
Seriously. I am not taking a jab at UFC.
It's just that he cleaned house. And if he won't change weightclass, than he needs to find new places to challenge himself.

I never said they should fire HIM. I am saying that I would like HIM to fight everyone around and so cement his legacy of the most dominant ever.

CLouis, I think GSP himself said that it would take him more than an year to gain weight properly to move up a weightclass.
So yeah, even though it might be doable, GSP himself said that he would take his time.

heh. I agree with you.
I was also shaking my head here, and couldn't find any real talent to really challenge GSP in his weightclass even outside the UFC.
Maybe Hyped knows some :)

Snoozer, snoozer, and a massacre.

I don't particularly care for GSP, so I really wouldn't mind seeing him fight Silva. It'd be the closest thing to a public execution we could hope for!

(All in good fun, GSP worshippers.)

Many times. Please guys, let's not devolve the conversation into a weight cutting/body building/steroids pissing contest.

Marius Zaromskis.

Not yet, but give him 3 or 4 more fights and he'll be competitive enough to face GSP (I am not saying he'll be good enough to beat GSP, mind that).

He's DREAM's Welterweight champ and has just signed with Strikeforce.

On top of that his last 3 fights have been won all by head kick KO.

November 4, 2009  05:19 PM ET

Almeida. That must be a joke.

But I would like to see GSP test himself at middle-weight. He'd be a small MW but his talent would still allow him to shine.

GSP vs. any good middle-weight is a big fight that we could get excited about.

GSP vs. any WW right now = easy win for GSP

Thank you for once again gracing us with your wonderful thoughts, you arrogant fu_ck. Are you familiar with Almeida? Do you have any reason to say "that must be a joke"? Heres the facts, if you even care about reality.
-Ricardo Almeida is 10-1 with his only loss a split (lousy) decision to Cote(who just got a shot at A. Silva recently)
-Holds wins over Minowaman, Nate Marquardt, Ryo Chonan, Matt Horwich, Grove and Misaki in those 10 wins. I'm sure your unsure of who some of them are so heres a short synopsis:Moniowaman hold wins over Yvel, Baroni, and Sapp, Marquardt was a king of Pancrase and is the current #1 contender at MW, Chonan subbed A. Silva with a heel hook, Horwich beat Homanaka, Radach and Pyle in the IFL, Grove won TUF and Misaki is a perenial top 10 WW in Japan.
-Posssess the kind of comfortability in the guard and on his back one needs when facing a superwrestler like GSP.
If you care to respond, please do so with facts. This is a site for opinions, but opinions based in reality not ignorace.

I mentioned him above, but like I said above I don't know if he is complete enough to fight GSP or ever will be. He always has a shot with that Cro Cop high kick, but I just haven't seen enough depth to his game to show me that he will develope into a top 5 WW. Only time will tell I guess.
