NFL  > Cleveland Browns  > Dawg Pound Mike - A great example of why Cleveland Rocks
November 4, 2009, 08:37 AM
What other city in this country could have something like this happen? A regular guy, a fan... a true representation of the people who love and mourn Cleveland sports gets a 1/2 hour meeting that turns into a 2 hour meeting with our team Owner?

Awesome!

Before all you fans from other cities jump in and say "we could do it too," don't kid yourself. This would NEVER happen in NY, NEVER happen in Chicago, NEVER happen in LA because it would take someone who isn't a regular guy to get in the door. A Spike Lee, an Alec Baldwin, a Barack Obama. Simply put... this is one of the reasons Cleveland is unique among sports cities... the Fans not only are loyal but also feel OBLIGATED to do anything we can to turn this dismal century around.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, you say... it isn't going to change anything. Maybe, Maybe not... but there isn't a city in this country that boast this kind of fan dedication... or passion. WHY do we stay with our teams??? Because all of us bleed for a city that may not be perfect... but has some amazing people who don't just sit there and complain... but get a meeting with an NFL OWNER to tell him that he isn't doing enough!

We may be another century away from a championship.... but I'll take Cleveland fans over the bandwagoners of any other city any day of any week of any year.

Here's to you Dawg Pound Mike! You are the best example of a fan. I look up to you!

I'm glad that the franchise I follow is no longer so bad that they resort to publicity stunts like this in order to try to save face with a fanbase that appears to be revolting against the team.

How are things in Cleveland? Can you still set the lake on fire?

November 4, 2009  10:18 AM ET

Also, wasn't this guy the "fan" that tried to organize a season ticketholder boycott against the Browns? Nothing says "loyal fan" like someone that intentionally tries to hurt the team he loves.

Mistake by the lake!

I don't know about the lake, but i guarantee it will never be as dirty as cincy. That place is filled with crime and crack addicts.

I agree with that. Dawg Pound Mike is probably more in it for the publicity than to make a change in the organization. The guy is a narcissist. He obviously is in love with this "Big Dawg" character that he has created- so much so that he sells out and does commercials.

I was reading a local article about the 'sit-down' between the fans and Lerner and found it repulsive that they are still planning the "brown-out" on national TV. What kind of sorry-excuse-for-a-fan would still continue to humiliate the owner after the owner was kind enough to take time out of his busy day to sit down and talk to fans that THINK they know what is right about the team. I hope that no one follows these morons for they will prove nothing by doing this. If you wanted to hurt the owner you should have never bought your tickets.

What are you trying to prove FAT MIKE?

Obviously you people don't know what you are talking about. I laugh when I read your ignorant comments. You should pay attention to what is actually going on and to who this person really is. You can't be too much of a fan if you don't realize the Dawgpound Mike and Big Dawg are too totally different people. Seriously, you are entitled to your opinion but you should at least know what you are talking about before you post something.

The fact that they have "scene identities" pretty much solidifies the previous poster's point. They are there for their own glorification; the team is secondary.

the identity of the fan - Dawg Pound Mike, Fat Mike, Big Dawg, Joe Schmo-- is immaterial. The main reason they staged this "brown-out" is to get the attention of Mr. Lerner. They literally sat down with Lerner, whose time is very valuable, and discussed their concerns about the organization. In the article, they said that they realized that Lerner DOES care about the team and is working to improve the organization in any way possible..... Then, they continue to stage this "brown -out" to prove what?

My point is that the main reason you boycott a game is to get the owner's attention... they obviously already achieved it so to continue this brown-out is foolish and doesn't prove any point whatsoever.... You already paid the money for the ticket. The only thing they are going to achieve from this stunt is make Cleveland look like a bigger joke than it is. They're just doing it for more attention.

Keep on laughing...

November 4, 2009  06:33 PM ET

The Cleveland Browns have the most loyal, idiotic fanbase in America.

I say that as a Cleveland Browns fan.

November 4, 2009  07:20 PM ET

It is time for Lerner to sell the team. This attempt to pacify the fans has made the team a bigger joke then they already were.He has proved over and over he does not know what he is doing.

I have to give Cleveland a rough go around. My boss is from there and rides my case. Just second nature to refer to Ceveland as such. It annoys him when I do. My appologies if I offended anyone.

For those of you who predictably jumped in with your dumbassed rants about Cleveland as a CITY Please take a moment to read my Blog. It is lovingly written to you.

so... I guess you're name is "Dallas_W"? Isn't that you're "scene identity"? They didn't call themselves these things... it's what they eventually got called because of being on the scene. You a chicken or an egg guy?

November 5, 2009  08:53 AM ET

Hey Joethomas... I respect your opinion on this. The truth is, people are talking about it... and you can't humiliate this team any worse than by putting this product on the field. The fact is, part of any business is your customers... and for 10 years (just counting the last 10 years) this ownership has been asking premium prices for a sub-standard product.

I think there is some validity to keeping the pressure on from the fans until the product improves. I certainly want to believe Lerner... that he wants to win... that it makes him sick to lose... that he is going to get an expert to run this team. However, the proof will be in his actions.

The Brown out won't scar us anymore than the fact that we are, in a way, a bye week for the rest of the NFL. But the fact that fans care enough to make a statement is a positive. I take a lot of crap for still being a Cleveland Fan... living in Florida for the past 14 years.... I keep showing up... the statement is... it's not good enough to count on us being rabid and stupid and happy... we still deserve a premium product.

Not that its a good thing but the river caught fire not the lake ****.. Do some simple research. Everyone knows it was the river. NICE TRY THOUGH, you actually should feel dumber now for an unsucessful bashing on our great city of CLEVELAND

When I call up news cameras and proclaim, "I am Dallas_W of the FanNation message boards! On behalf of the members of FanNation, I proclaim a boycott on Sports Illustrated!" you might have a small point. The fact that these people take themselves so seriously that they seek the spotlight and wish to be known by their self-bestowed nicknames shows that to them, the football is secondary.
Don't worry, every team has at least one. I never miss an OSU game, but I'll be damned if I'm not sick to death of the giant, painted, mullet wig-wearing fat guy with 20 pounds of buckeyes around his neck, who always manages to get about 20 combined minutes of airtime every game. Maybe he needs attention, or maybe he takes this whole thing far too seriously. Probably both.

That what Lerner says and what he does are the same things. They told Lerner that if he spoke publicly about their discussion, thus publicly reassuring the fans that he is going to better this team/organization, that they would call off the so-called "brown-out." Words are meaningless unless they are followed by action.

Well again.... I think you miss the point. He eventually acknowledges the fact that people started calling him this, and I don't see an issue with that. Does he take himself too seriously? Yeah... I guess he does. Once again, you are assuming the nickname is self bestowed. My understanding is... he has been at every game in the same spot being an amature cheerleader and a defacto face of the dawg pound and eventually he was dubbed Dawg pound Mike. I do not think he actually named himself.... which is the whole premise of your argument.

So... I guess the story could end there.... and he could just be a disgruntled fan... but instead he has chosen to at least try and represent the fans and speak about the product on the field.... I guess it's simply a case of because you wouldn't do it... it must be stupid or wrong.

Granted, I am not sure what it will accomplish. However, I still think it's pretty unique for someone who really represents fans to get the opportunity to speak to the owner. My point was, as illustrious as NY and LA might be... those cities wouldn't see this happen.
