NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Sports Illustrated says Pac 10 is the best?!

Stuart Mandel of Sports Illustrated says:

"What once was viewed as a one-team league is unquestionably the nation's toughest, deepest conference this season (no offense, SEC apologists)."

The conference has improved for sure, but I think it is more a case that other conferences (SEC Big 12 last year) are no longer dominating.

I do give the Pac 10 credit for not playing as much of a patsy non-conference schedule as the other major conferences.

Just read the article myself. Kinda hard to argue.

Even without the fall the other 2 biggies have suffered this year, the PAC has made a significant overall improvement.

Take Mandel's opinion and fifty cents, and you still can't get a cup of coffee.
Let's see, today I'll make a statement I can't prove and many won't believe, but it'll be discussed heavily and I get to keep my job a little while longer. Great!!
Of course, often said, until we get a playoff, speculation runs amok, but isn't it fun.

The Puke 10 is a toss down, its a race for last place, and its no surprise that keyboard jockeys like Mandel could say something so stupid,he and his peer Andy Staples take the simple approach while pretending to be sports experts and commentary, they howl about the current hot teams and publish generic articles with little use of true analysis. Im sure they know more than they appear to and are intelligent men, they wagon the current hot streaks because it sells their product and enhances their career. The simple fans who only wanna be excited about their own teams. This comical segment of sports fans couldnt care less about the nuts & bolts of this great sport like myself and all the other brilliant minds in here--baaaa!
O well--Its free

SI is obviously desperate to declare any conference but the SEC as the best. Last year it was my Big 12-we were good and a decent argument could be made, but Florida did beat the Sooners and the SEC depth was pretty impressive in their bowl record. (BTW, the Big 12 has more depth than folks realize as A&M and Nebraska and Baylor are all better).

More recently it's been the Itty Bitty Ten as Mandel and Staples do all they can to promote that conference as nationally competitive. They even put four teams in the National Top 25 ahead of the SEC. The Big Ten is weak, it's not an elite conference and anyone with eyes can see it. Furthermore, every year the Itty Bitties confirm it with their annual faceplant in bowl season.

Now it's the Pac 10 that SI wants to support. Maybe the teams are good, but I don't see Stanford running the ball on top SEC defenses and I'm underwhelmed so far by most of the teams in that conference; I guess we'll just have to see in the bowls. The Pac 10 will still get its matchup vs the Big Ten, but the Pac 10 should also get a 2nd team in the BCS. Hopefully, the matchup will be vs the SEC and we can solve part of this debate then.

SEC is the best and that's all their is to it!!!.

Until last night, we had three teams with legitimate NCG shots. Now, we have TWO teams who will meet in a national semifinal (UF, Bama), and will almost certainly win a 4th consecutive national title (and if Bama somehow beats us, the SEC would have THREE different teams win the NC in those 4 years - I'd call that "depth"). Not sure how the Pac 10 trumps us. Yawn.

I'd call it luck, considering how they got there and who they played.

Yawwwn.

Here's the thing with the Pac 10, while they aren't any great, top 5 teams, I'd say 7 or 8 teams out of 10 belong in the top 25. Now, while you may say I'm crazy for this, I know that they are not 25 teams out there that could beat USC, Oregon, Stanford, Arizona, Cal, and Oregon State the majority of the times they played.

The other thing with the Pac 10 is this, because of the fact that everyone in the Pac 10 is so equally good this year, it destroys their rankings and records. Instead of having one or two 9-0 teams like the SEC, the Pac 10 has 6 teams that are 7-2 and 6-3. Now, among those teams with 2 or 3 losses, almost all of those L's have come within conference.

And tell me this, what, what might I ask you has the SEC done this season that is so impressive? They play a cupcake non conference schedule, so what about them makes it so easy for everyone to declare them the best? You guys are naiive and shallow fans if you are going to base the depth and strength of a conference based upon ranking. The voters have had a hard on for the SEC for years, and rightfully so in some cases. But the fact is, the SEC did indeed take a step back this season, as Florida, Alabama, and LSU really are the only great teams from this conference this season. After them, the talent really drops off the table an unusual amount for the SEC.

Half of the teams in the Pac-10, couldn't even dream of competing with the worst of the SEC this year.

I'd say there is 1 team that couldn't compete with the bottom half, and that would be Washington State, everyone else in the Pac 10 could compete.
