With all the one - two loss BCS teams: it is not only hopeful but POSSIBLE...and both teams can play with ANYONE!
October 12, 2008  01:33 AM ET

byu and utah are ok but there are plenty of others that u could mention for nat champ game. texas for one, alabama, dot count out gators as well they put a whippin on no.4 LSU.

October 12, 2008  01:38 AM ET

id like to see it be texas vs the sec winner..........hopefully someone hangs on to #1 for a while so the rankings can settle down. penn state could make a run though

October 12, 2008  01:47 AM ET

My AP: Bama, TX, Penn State, OU, Tech, BYU, USC, Florida, Ok State, Mizzu, Georgia, USC

October 12, 2008  01:50 AM ET

THEN: Tech plays TX, SEC keeps kicking each other around (Bama will not go undefeated), Penn State loses to OSU (like every year), Ok State will fall, Mizzu (overrated)....all that said puts BYU / Utah winner in GOOD shape....very possible

October 12, 2008  01:56 AM ET

BYU has looked very strong. Unfortunately they have that MWC/WAC stigma attached to them - whether it is fair or not. I think that they are going to have to step up their OOC schedule to ever gain any real respect. Not saying that they aren't deserving, just they aren't getting much respect.

October 12, 2008  03:24 AM ET

BYU respect? 1984 nat champs, QB factory, Heisman in Detmer, Ranked in top 10 (pretty good for Non-BSC school) ... one problem they have is no BCS school like to schedule them!!

October 12, 2008  03:51 AM ET

B Y Who? Just another Bush League, annoying team bitting at the ankles of the big boys. Can you say flash in the pan?

It would take a miracle for a non BCS school to get into the NC game under the current system. Every BCS conference champ would have to have 2 or more loses and the a non BCS team would have to have a perfect record and key wins over BCS schools . That???s just not going to happen in the same year. Its not fair but, it is what it is.

Amen Brother 1st & Goal, for those who believe the BYU's of the universe belong in the NCG, I have two words for you, Prove It. Read his take on the subject and that of a playoff. But you better pack a lunch!

it might look good on paper, to bad hawaii ruined it for the non BCS teams in there bowl last year.

October 12, 2008  03:27 PM ET

No way its going to happen.

October 12, 2008  04:39 PM ET

If one of them makes it then their opponent would be either; Texas, Alabama, Penn State, Oklahoma, Florida or USC... Can you say un-holy slaughter. I dont think either could stay on the field with any of these teams in a National Championship game on the national stage. They would fold like a house of cards.

October 12, 2008  08:12 PM ET

why doesn't byu/utah work out some kind of deal to get in the pac10, this would solve a lot of these problems with the western cons that are not in bcs & i think would make pac10 look better.

Bwwhahaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhaaaaaaa. What a joke. Beat somebody in the top 10 and come back and talk then. Until then, enjoy the Liberty Bowl.

USC beats BYU by 30. Florida beats BYU by 20. Georgia beats BYU by 14. Mizzou and Okla St score 40 plus on BYU and win. You have USC listed twice. Go do your mission project and stop dreaming.

Thanks for the compliment - I plan to blog it if I ever get time off from work... and I promise that if I do bother to mention Strength of Schedule, it will only be at the very end.

BYU and/or Utah should get in only if the Big 12 and SEC only have a two loss team and BYU and/or Utah is undefeated AND Penn State has a loss. With that scenario they would have a better argument than USC and Ohio State and the Big East/ACC (MWC beat up on PAC 10 and Big 10 and is clearly better than Big East and ACC this year). BYU would have a shot against LSU, TT, OSU (both of them), Oklahoma, and Penn State-no shot against USC, FLA, UGA, or TX (the teams with deep passing threats and solid defense would kill BYU, Oklahoma is listed as beatable simply due to their penchant for choking big games). Utah would have no shot against anyone other than TT or Oklahoma.

It would still be great to see though, as the BCS is a pretty corrupt monopoly that deserves to be crashed. In fact, a BYU win might just lead to a playoff system, so SEC fans should be (for this one season only) the Cougars biggest fans, as the SEC would win a CFB playoff system more years than not.

I always laugh when I read comments like these because it just shows how ignorant some people are. How can a team which was national champions in '84, has a Heisman winner, a Doak Walker winner, 2 Outland winners, and is in the top 20 at the end of most seasons, be considered a flash in the pan?

Or they could pay USC, Florida, and Oklahoma to play them...on the road.

If BYU were to beat USC, Florida, and Oklahoma on the road in the same year (while winning their conference), they would be in the NCG.

Since BYU is already in the top 10, they would have a better chance then Utah of making it to the NC game this year, but a lot would have to happen for them to get there. A more realistic scenario would be if BYU could run the table and then get into a BCS bowl game this year. Since most of their starters are Juniors and Sophmores, they would then start the next year in, or close to, the top 5. If they went undefeated again then they would get in the NC game.
