"War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."

Faramir's council to Frodo.

Mr. Mitchell, an elderly gentleman of 85, arrived in Paris by plane. At French customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport.

"You have been to France before, monsieur?", the customs officer asked sarcastically.

Mr. Mitchell admitted that he had been to France previously.

"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready!"

"I'm sorry, but the last time I was here I didn't have to show my passport", the American replied.

"Impossible. Americans always have to show their passport on arrival in France!" stated the customs officer.

The elderly American glanced at the Frenchman, and then explained quietly, "Well sir, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach in 1944, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show my passport to."
