Should the Yankees retire Joe Torre's uniform number (#6)?

One could argue that it's certainly deserved for the 6 pennants and 4 WS titles he managed the team to. That's better than Billy Martin's record, and his number (#1) is retired.

On the other hand, the Yanks have, IMHO, gone overboard in the retired number department. All their honorees are deserving, but with so many great players in their history, the Yankees should hold an even higher criteria for this honor than other teams do. Retiring Torre's #6 will leave only one active single-digit number - #2 - and I think we can assume THAT number is never going to be reassigned.

I say, assign #6 to a promising rookie this spring. And eventually give Joe T. a plaque on the wall in Monument Park.
