NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > The Alabama Crimson Tide is the REAL #1 team in college football....not texas
October 14, 2008, 12:26 PM
seriously though texas gets one top 10 win in neutral ground!!!

Alabama beats 2 top 10 teams....on the road and gets jumped from 5 spots...what do I think???

B U L L S H I T

Alabama deserves the spot...I think people just voted for texas cause quite frankly their used to seeing texas up there and maybe it just seemed to make for since to vote for texas then a team who hasnt been number one since like 92.

Texas fans...enjoy it while you can because YOU WILL LOSE..

If not to mizzou then to alabama in the national title game...

ROLL TIDE

Ok, sure.

Then again...who cares?

#2 and #1 both go to the NCG. They both control their own destiny. And, since #1 and #2 play in the last game, there are no bonus points or extra cash for being #2 all season until then.

October 14, 2008  12:33 PM ET

Crimson, while I feel your pain and frustration, I am glad to see the Tide and just #2 - as long as they stay there, they are still a shoe-in for the NC game. But being at #2 is a lot less pressure and this team needs to guard against complacency. I have said all season that I think they play better in the underdog role.

Besides, at this juncture, the #1 spot is only window dressing. Both Bama and Texas have a long way to go before the season's end.

October 14, 2008  12:33 PM ET

LOL silars great minds thinking alike, eh?

October 14, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Bruce your right. and trust me you wont find someone as thankful for being where we are now as I am..its just really frustrating...I mean when your number 2 in the country and the numbers 1,3, and 4 team lose around you..it should be sure fire. I guess its just the pride of being number 1 in the country...alabamas worked hard for it...I think their ready for the pressures that come along with being the number 1 team....they remind me of the 1999 florida state seminoles...they look that good.

You know, I hadn't considered the inherent bias against 'Bama and 16-year grudge as a rationale for both the AP & Coaches voting for Texas at #1. I think you may be on to something here.

Now that you mention it... since Bear Bryant died (God Rest His Soul and Hat), all of those years of animosity and jealousy of 'Bama have come right to the surface and are proudly displayed without fear of restitution. Those coaches across the country and the computers can now exhibit all of that repressed hatred in their votes and calculations.

The lights dim and a single spotliight highlights a curtain stage left.

Coach Stoops enters and sits solemnly at a table with a ballot in his hand. Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain blares from loudspeakers above the coaches desk. The coach speaks:

"I hate Texas. Names like "Mack" and "Colt". Makes me so sick to look across the sideline and se their smug faces "hootin" and "hollerin" and jumpin around like a bunch of Texas jackassrabbits.

But wait! I've waited many years for this opportunity. "Bama is right there... RIGHT THERE dammit. Now is my chance! Vengance is MINE!

Number 5. Oklahoma State gets a big thank you! Keepin' it in the OK corral!
4. OOOOk-lahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain!
3. Good 'ol Joe. Gawd bless him.

Torn.

So torn.

UUUUUNNnnnnnnnggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHH!

2. BAMA! Give you the Freaking Emeril Lagasse! BAM! Beyotch.

Number 1. I reeeeeeeeeeeeeally hate Texas. But at least it ain't Bama sitting here.

Stupid elephant.

but you have to keep in mind the big picture: it is the ranking at the END of the season that is the real prize. C'mon man, think how sweet it was in '92, when no one gave the Tide a chance, to annihilate the Canes. It is always much sweeter in the end to be able to say "I told you so!". So let the Longhorns revel in what may be their temporary ranking and let the Tide just keep taking care of business. I promise you that if Bama ends up winning it all any frustration felt now will be forgotten.

October 14, 2008  01:10 PM ET

Take it from a USC fan the last few years...you don't want to be #1 or #2 until the *END* of the season.

Those lofty rankings just put a bigger target on your back. Teams play harder because they know an upset guarantees a week of media and TV playback. And, your players can lose their own intensity. Playing with a chip on your shoulder does have it's advantages.

October 14, 2008  01:15 PM ET

Dang. Not even a peep.

Oh well.

For the record, I do remember the angst of getting dropped from Number 1 after winning, going undefeated, and finishing #2. We have our own demons from '94. At least you'll get a shot at making things right if you win out.

On the other hand, PSU may theoretically sit in the #3 spot, win a BCS bowl (but not play in the title game) and AGAIN finish #2. excuse me while I hurl at simply thinking about that.

October 14, 2008  01:23 PM ET

Keep Bama at no. 2. Rest of year is not over but I like our odds. Better than the alternative so cannot complain. RTR

October 14, 2008  01:24 PM ET

Well take from an OSU fan you dont even want to go to that game, LOL...

But I would go back in a heart beat!

October 14, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Then again, teams caught looking ahead...

Wait, isn't Ole Miss coming to 'Bama this weekend? The same team that had the gumption to beat Florida at The Swamp?

Focus! Focus!

100! Does this mean I'm no longer a newbie?

October 14, 2008  01:38 PM ET

psu is on a roll today, isn't he?

October 14, 2008  01:42 PM ET

Just rollin' like the Tide. 'BAMA!

Good point...take care of Ole Miss first then look up to see where you are. Bama, if you guys played like you played Georgia...you'll have no problem rolling over Ole Miss. But if you play like you played Kentucky..things could get scary quick. Ole Miss has a habit of knocking around SEC teams at their homes.

What will really be interesting in this game is that both teams are coming off a bye.

Good luck Bama! I've got a Vanderbilt game that will require my focus...ugh SEC stands for Sanity Erased Constantly

Lmao, dude you`re killing me.I`ll have two of whatever that gentleman on the floor is havin. I love your spirit. But imo the way we need to look at it is like this-the only thing we need to worry about is Ole Miss and that sneaky **** Houston Nutt. He`s like that friend you had in high school that would watch a fight develop, run up from behind, sucker punch somebody and then run like hell. The ONLY thing we can control is wins and losses,so thats what we need to focus on.And I don`t want to be given the # 1 ranking, I want to TAKE it.

im acually a texas fan as far as outside the sec but to be undefeated in the sec in this day should be a golden ticket to number 1. playoffs would prove that without a doubt

There was this NFL team once...they finished the season undefeated...but they lost the Super Bowl...

If I could only remember their names...it was so long ago, you know?
