NFL  > Chicago Bears  > Jay "IF ONLY" Cutler
December 14, 2009, 04:04 PM
Throughout the offseason leading up to this season and through this season we have all heard the phrase...if only Jay Cutler had...fill in the blank...he would be an elite QB. When the trade was made for Cutler in Apr 09, the Chicago fans were saying that Cutler's Broncos record was tarnished by the poor defense he was saddled with. If only he had a defense they said...If only he had a defense that could stop a parked car...he would have won in Denver. Now after the trainwreck that has been Cutler's first season with the Bears, we hear the same if only qualifications concerning Cutler. If only he had an O-line, If only he had quality WRs. If only he had decent coaches. Lovie Smith was decent enough to rebuild the Bears Defense and guide them to a Super Bowl berth a few years ago...but now he is a flawed coach? Elite players elevate their teams. Elite players raise the talent around them, they lift their team to play better than they are. Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, John Elway all did just that with their teams. I am not sure you could say that the Bears would be much worse without Cutler. Are the Bears better off with Cutler and do you buy into the IF ONLY argument?
