Capitol One Bowl

OVERVIEW

Thirty-six years ago to the day, these two schools squared off in their only previous meeting as Penn State capped a perfect season with a 16-9 victory in the 1974 Orange Bowl. LSU held Heisman-winning tailback John Cappelletti to just 50 yards on the ground, but he scored the only touchdown of the day -- and that proved all the difference. This time around, meeting in Orlando rather than Miami, the Tigers and the Nittany Lions could put up a very similar scoreline given the quality of their two defenses.

LSU opened the season 5-0 with a run that included wins at Washington, at Mississippi State and at then-#18 Georgia. Then the top-ranked Gators came to Baton Rouge and the winning took a hiatus. The Tigers, though, managed to hold Florida to just 13 points and 115 yards below their season average on offense. Losses at Alabama and at Ole Miss were the only other blemishes on their schedule, as Les Miles??? crew protected home turf the rest of the way.

Penn State came off a Rose Bowl appearance last season with many of its skill players returned but a green offensive line surrounding them. It has shown at times, as the vaunted Spread HD has been held 35 yards and nearly ten points a game below last year???s averages. Yet the only losses sustained by the Nittany Lions this year was a tough home loss against an Iowa team many people overlooked coming into 2009 and against Ohio State in Columbus. Joe Paterno could match last year???s 11-2 record with a second career win over the Tigers after winning that Orange Bowl in his eighth season of a long journey as coach of Penn State.
