NFL  > Chicago Bears  > Pro's and Con's of 3/4 vs 4/3 defense.

The 3/4 defense is on the rise but is it better than the 4/3 or worse? Personally I feel that the 3/4 while adding another linebacker thus speed over power is a mistake. In the 4/3 the lineman is on the line which puts him a step ahead of the linebacker. Then you must consider the fact of physics. In the 3/4 you loose 30 to 40 pounds of muscle by benching a lineman. Thus except in only the best 3/4 defenses the best running teams can usualy run on them especially when they bring in an extra TE and or a FB. Sure you can blitz in different directions easier but does the man get there faster than a lineman? Next I must point out that the 3/4 demands lighter linebackers and heavier thus slower linemen. Lastly I want to point out that the 3/4 has been used since the early 1970's. Since that time can you name one Great 3/4 defense like the 85 Bears,86 Giants, Doomsday defense, Steel Curtain, or the Purple People eaters? If it was so great wouldn't it have done better in FORTY years??? Go BEARS!!!
