NFL  > Kansas City Chiefs  > KC Chiefs 2010 offseason... what they should do.
January 15, 2010, 04:32 AM
I have carefully studied this roster, these coaches, the free agents available and future draft picks for the 2010 NFL season. After looking things over, I think I might have a good idea of what the Chiefs could and definitely should do. Here's what I came up with. Let me know what you guys think. (Yes, you will see New England left overs in the free agent category for two reasons... #1. The coaches and front office guys are familiar with these players #2. New England have several big-time free agents seeking better deals. Someone will have to go.)

Resign: WR Chris Chambers, QB Brodie Croyle, QB Matt Gutierrez, LB Corey Mays, OT Ryan O'Callaghan, OG Wade Smith, C Rudy Niswanger, LB Andy Studebaker, CB Maurice Leggett, FB Mike Cox, WR Terrance Copper, SS Mike Brown, RB Jackie Battle

Release: TE Sean Ryan, LB Mike Vrabel, LB Derrick Johnson, WR Bobby Wade, OG Andy Alleman, OT Ikechuku Ndukwe, SS Jarrad Page, RB Kolby Smith, OT Barry Richardson

TRADE: Dwayne Bowe and 2010 5th round pick for Anquan Bolden WR - Arizona
(Bowe might be the dumbest player in the NFL. Its true. Try having a conversation with the guy. Listening to his choppy fragments and made up words make me feel like I'm having to decifer some kind of code. This is important because he has had a difficult time learning at the NFL level. His inability to listen to his coaches and consistantly make the easy catches has overshadowed his talent. A fresh start somewhere new might help him. Pair him up with Fitgerald & Breasten and see how he does. Meanwhile, Bolden gets to become a number one option in KC, working on a contract year. This would give KC the opportunity to try him out, while trying to lock him up long-term. Both sides win with this trade.

Free Agent Targets: 1. Vince Wolfork NT - New England (They need a true nose and leader on the d-line. They should make him their #1 priority if he becomes available.
2. Leigh Bodden CB - New England - Crennel is familiar with him from Cleveland. Good player too. It would be nice to pair him up with Brandon Flowers.
3. D'Qwell Jackson ILB - Cleveland - He had a career year in Crennel's final year.
4. Malcom Floyd WR - San Diego - He's big, strong and young. He'd make for a nice #2 receiver.
5. Tight End - There are three quality tight ends available. Whom ever we can sign that best fit budget and offense would be best. I ranked them in this order...
#1. Owen Daniels #2. Ben Watson #3. Bo Sciafe
6. Thomas Davis OLB - Carolina Panthers (Young player with upside, coming off injury and needs to prove that he can once again be a force). Could get a pro bowl caliber player for less than expected.

2010 NFL Draft plans - Priority should be to solidify the offensive line, find a power running back to pair up with Charles, a safety that might be able to start immediately and to improve their special teams.
1st Round. Pick #5. Russell Okung - LT Oklahoma State
2nd Round Pick #35. Jonathan Dwyer - RB Georgia Tech
2nd Round Pick #50. Darrell Stuckey - SS Kansas
3rd Round Pick # 69. Jacoby Ford - WR Clemson (Speed burner, kick returner)
4th Round Pick # 100. Sam Young - RT Notre Dame (6'8, 320 pounds -Weis' Favorite)
5th Round - Traded to Arizona
6th / 7th - Best players available

2010 NFL Line-up:
QB: Matt Cassel, Croyle, Gutierrez
RB: Jamaal Charles, Dwyer, Battle
FB: Mike Cox
WR #1: Anquan Bolden
WR #2: Malcom Floyd
WR #3: Chris Chambers
WR #4: Jacoby Ford (Kick Return Specialist)
TE: Ben Watson, Pope
RT: Ryan O'Callaghan / Sam Young
RG: Brian Waters, W. Smith
C: Rudy Neiswanger
LG: Branden Albert
LT: Russel Okung

3-4 Defense:
DE: Tyson Jackson
NT: Vince Wolfork
DE: Glenn Dorsey
OLB: Tamba Hali
ILB: Demorrio Williams/ Corey Mays
ILB: D'Qwell Jackson
OLB: Thomas Davis, Studebaker
CB #1: Brandon Flowers
CB #2: Leigh Bodden
NB: Brandon Carr
SS: Mike Brown / Darrel Stuckey (Great at Special Teams!)
FS: John McGraw

K: Ryan Succup
P: Dustin Colquitt
KR: Jacoby Ford, Quinten Lawrence

One thing to remember is that Chiefs cap number is significantly lower with the release of Larry Johnson, Derrick Johnson and the trade of Tony Gonzalez. They have money to spend and connections to these free agents that might allow them to sign them. Time will tell.

super nice job there KC guy, I hope the Chiefs do make the changes they need now that Peterson is finally gone.

January 17, 2010  12:53 AM ET

Thanks. What do you think about not resigning Derrick Johnson, trading Dwayne Bowe and trying to sign Vince Wolfork?

I thought Johnson wasn`t to bad a LB, but it was just that the team was so bad, he looked ok and sometimes good to me ,best of the bad you know. Same thing about Bowe, out of the WR`s he looked the best but bobby wade, a cast off from another team shows up and looks as good as Bowe, and this year he seems to have bricks for fingers. I don`t remember him dropping passes that bad before. I don`t know much about Wilfork, is it Wolfork or Wilfork, NT at the Pats ? I don`t know much about him but with the time and reaserch you put into your thread, I`m with ya on him too

LOL....... I`ll have to go look before it gets reported !

January 17, 2010  02:11 PM ET

in a deep draft, and some teams looking for QBs, im sure they could unload Croyle for a low 2nd high 3rd. I would also trade under achieving Glenn Dorsey to someone like...the Colts maybe for a 2nd round pick. I do not think he is suited very well as a 3-4 end and would be better as a 4-3 pass rushing DT.

January 17, 2010  03:39 PM ET

I dont think we should get rid of DJ. I would get rid of Demorrio Williams, Corey Mays, and Jovan Belcher before I get rid of DJ. He's made bigger plays in the short time he's played this season than the other three combined. Why not start Studebaker? He made great plays too when he was on the field. I just dont want to see another Kendrell Bell! Mcraw and Mike Brown need to go. Point blank. These guys were getting toasted all year. They would be back ups if they played for the Detroit Lions. I'm not going to come down too hard on D-Bowe. One of the dumbest players ever to play has lead his team to four Super Bowl wins (Terry Bradshaw). Have you ever listened to Jamaal Charles? He ends every sentence with "Know what I'm sayin?". So not being able to hold a conversation doesnt mean you are a bad player. D-Bowe doesnt have the break away speed but he can find the holes in the defense. Two years and three different OCs is not helpful. Give him another year under Weis/Haley's system. I still wish we wouldnt have signed Matt Cassel to a long term deal. The guy takes too long to make reads which turns into sacks (also see 2008 NE sacks with Matt Cassel 47 and 2009 w/o 16.) Now combine that with LJ running the ball (well lack there was) and it makes the O-Line look bad. Its true. The sacks with and w/o LJ is 26-17 respectively. I still dont think we should give up on Dorsey. Give Crennel a chance to deveolp him first. DLineman doesnt have instant success in the NFL, especially after switching positions.

January 17, 2010  03:44 PM ET

Now that Charlie Weis is with the team, just make sure you don't have Navy or Syracuse on the schedule.

In all seriousness, nice research, KCGuy. Crennel and Weis aren't head coaches, but they are very good coordinators. This team will be significantly better next year.

This is by far the most ridiculous analysis I have ever read. Trade DBowe for a WR who will be turning 30 soon? Move an all Pro Guard in Water to RG?? The logic behind your moves are just moronic. The only part that makes sense if drafting Okung and maybe getting Wilfork. And how are you FOR keeping Brown and getting rid of DJ? Do you even watch the games??

*Laffin*...............You first time posters amuse me. You come in here and start downgrading people, calling them names, and question their sanity and why?

Because they are expressing their thoughts and opinions on subjects that they know they have NO control over?.......This is nothing more than a message board where people chat and DISCUSS their teams and what they might do. Nothing more, nothing less.

Try being a little more civil next time you post.

First time poster here & I gotta say I'm impressed w/ your depth of thought on this line of reasoning KC Guy. I normally post on the fox site for the Chiefs & stumbled here tryin' to get there...A few thoughts...
I'd definitly sign Croyle ( as Backup ), Mays ( Love the "Motor " ),& Studebaker ( Ditto both )
I'd sign DJ as Trade bait ( For Wilfork & our 5th ? ) & Alleman ( He's like a Swiss Army Knife Lineman )
I'm OK w/ Bowe for Boldin plus a pick ( Even our extra 2 spot plus their 2011 4th or 5th )
No way M.Floyd & Bo Scaife get traded w/in the Division...
& Don't give up on Cottam just yet...We quietly picked up Bernie Parmalee as our TE Coach & I think that position will return to promenence in KC w/ him & Weis calling the Off#...
Anyhow ...the Ramblings of the Rabid...GO Chiefs !!! Touch Down !!! KAN - SAS - CITY !!! And The Home Of The ...CHIEFS !!!

February 6, 2010  06:32 PM ET

The Chiefs are a lot closer to a good team than they get credit for. Cassell is a "Good team" QB. He looks great on a good team and subpar on a bad one. They have a great runner in Charles but should get a legit power runner in the 3rd round just to have a great two back system. There O-Line is terrible so I like the LT first round pick. Second rounder needs to be spent on WR. Even if Bowe stays or they trade him. Some great WR's can be found in the 2nd to 4th rounds. Defensively, Chiefs need a true nose tackle. If they can't get Wilfork, they should consider Terrance Cody, he is slipping and if they trade DJ they could maybe get a second rounder out of him and maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder. There D-line would be Dorsey, Cody, Jackson... one hell of a start. The league has shown that linebackers can be found in all levels of the draft that can contribute, so they should draft there. Chiefs fans need to pray that they can score a CB this year because that is the main weakness of the Chiefs. I hate them to death, but they will be contender in 3 or less years. Maybe not with this idiot coach, but the personel is improving nicely.
Oh, keep dreaming about the Bolden for Bowe & a 5th round pick stuff. Bowe isn't even as good as Bolden and he has an attitude problem. (And might be retarded) He would have some problems learing the offense in 'Zona because it is very complex. If the Chiefs want Bolden, it's gonna be more of a Bowe and a 3rd round pick deal. 5th rounders are valuable but Bolden is a prize to be won.

February 6, 2010  06:53 PM ET

The Chiefs in my opinion are on the fast track to being a contender, the Pioli hire along with the acquisition of Cassell along with the union of Weiss and Crennel are excellent moves on the part of the Chiefs and should provide instant success for the organization in the coming years.

February 7, 2010  10:56 AM ET

Charlie...We've waited over forty years for instant success...Let's just get to 8 & 8 first...
Alot of our fans have this as "EXpected " this year ...well like early Mock Drafts ( that also raise a fuss ) Here's my pre- Schedule forecast:
In No Particular Order AWAY: Denver L , Houston L, Indy L, Okland W, St Louis W, SD L, Seattle L, Cleveland W
Home Denver W, Oak W , SD L Cards L , Jags L, 9ers W, Titans L, Bills W Obviously there is wiggle room for more victories ( Cards don't have Warner,Seattle changed Coaches Ect. just as there are potentially more losses (Cleveland & Buffalo beat us last year for EXample & the 49ers appear to be in ascendancy a year ahead of us )
This puts us @ 7 & 9 ( With the Holy Grail of 8 & 8 if we can beat both Seattle & Cleveland on the road)...Not un attainable ...What Say Y'all ?

February 9, 2010  12:46 PM ET

I like the analysis. Personally concerned about the health factor of the Chiefs' quarterbacks. The number 3 better be solid until the offensive line improves significantly over last year. I think they have more potential to improve faster than the D-line. I thought Waters wasn't happy with the Chiefs, but that may have been at the beginning of last season. It would have been nice to have Bolden this year, but a younger receiver is also needed.

I've never been impressed with Tamba Hali. For a former first round pick, he's never really produced. His numbers have declined since his rookie year. With an offense that rated near the bottom for time-of-possession, you'd think he'd have more tackles than 62 last year. Maybe there's something I'm missing.

Ultimately, I think that the potential that most see in the Chiefs is due more to the coaching staff they've accumulated rather than the overall player quality. Hopefully they will be able to draw more of the potential out of the players.

LSU is well represented on this team. Rudy Niswanger would be a good addition, grab Alan Faneca from the Jets as well. Dwayne Bowe & Dorsey weren't draft to write term papers, they're fooseball players! Ha!

Maybe the Colts will let you have Addai too.

Lol. I hear JaMarcus Russel will be available soon too! Nobody wants that bum though, not even the Raiders!
