What's wrong with Manning this year? Is it his supporting cast or is he on the decline?
December 13, 2008  07:07 AM ET

both

December 13, 2008  07:26 AM ET

peyton manning IS NOT ON THE DECLINE! he had knee surgery less u forget. everyone in their right mind knows it takes two years to be "back" to ur normal self after the surgery. now his supporting cast has been down this year. the line has been banged up thus more pressure on manning in the pocket and the running game is virtually non-existant. as far as marvin harrison, he'll probably get a pass this year but i wouldnt be suprised if the let him go. not sure about his contract situation tho.

December 13, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Not healthy from start of season, how can you not see that?

December 14, 2008  02:05 AM ET

His contract with the devil is almost up.

December 14, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Peyton will be fine. at least he does act like a real human on and off the field so the little contract with the devil comment is really uncalled for. Do your research he has a different contract with the good side

December 14, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Ah, "a little research" she says! My dear, I will show you not only that Peyton is in league with the army of darkness, but that he may in fact be the biblical Antichrist!

Allow me.

"and he who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number. His number is six hundred, three score and six." - Revelation 13:18

Now, Peyton Manning can't be #666. The NFL doesn't even allow three-digit jersey numbers. However, 6 + 6 + 6 = 18.

"And I saw the beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like unto lamb" - Revelation 13:11

Peyton has a horseshoe on either side of his helmet. Now, at the time the bible was written, they had no concept - let alone words for - the modern football helmet. So, when John had his vision, the horseshoes on Peyton's head could best be described by him as "horns."

"and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? And who is able to war with him?" - Revelation 13:4

Everyone loves Peyton. Everyone asks, who is a better qb than Manning? This thread is proof in itself.

Hey, I'm just trying to help you. I'll explain how it probably happened in my next post.

December 14, 2008  02:13 PM ET

It's all fairly simple. Manning went through college as a highly acclaimed quarterback who just never could quite win the big one...everything would be going swimmingly, and then Florida would happen. Upon graduation, realizing he would be facing even more intense competition, Peyton realized he would need some extra juice. A little push, if you will.

A few phone calls later (Bowden is heavily implicated), a little number change, and Peyton was well on his way. Sure, he started small, but they couldn't have him attracting any unwanted attention. The irony - and the devil does have a sense of humor - is that for years, he was only rewarded with statistics...as New England became his new Florida. Eventually, the prince of darkness was contractually obligated to let him win the Super Bowl, and he finally got his reward.

Peyton, unfortunately, was simply a victim of a poorly-constructed contract (for him). The text allegedly reads that he will win "the big one," legally meaning "THE big one," i.e. - "only one." Fortunately, however, his agent put a clause into the contract ensuring his client fabulous wealth, which has come in the form of his many endorsements and assorted advertising deals.

SatanManning - did you really just waste all of our time with that comment? I'm a Christian man - and believe all of the things in the Bible - but if you also will read further, you will notice that if you are a Christian, you will NOT even know who the AntiChrist is. LOL nice try though and your "logic" may fit. What a stretch. I laughed out loud at that posting.

December 16, 2008  03:56 PM ET

There is nothing wrong with Manning. He had surgery, he's back to form now. Everyone thinks that just because a couple of seasons you can throw for 40-50 tds that you'll be able to do it every year. That's what's happening. Manning may win the MVP - a lot of people are talking about it.

December 16, 2008  04:45 PM ET

I think Manning and the Colts could be peaking at the right time. They are playoff battle tested. Much rather see them in the SB than Steelers or Titains; dont want to watch a SB with a 13-10 score!

Well, that was kinda what I was going for...

If you guys want to know what's wrong with Manning, though, on a serious note, he's just getting older. He isn't 26 anymore, he's 32 (33?). It's normal for a player to decline as he ages. Say what you will - and he is still an elite passer - but Manning doesn't have as strong an arm as he used to, and it isn't going to get any better.

Look at some of the other first-rounders taken in 1998. Charles Woodson, Fred Taylor. They're old, too. I love Fred Taylor to death, but he doesn't have that many years left. Manning, as a quarterback, will play longer, but his days are numbered as well.

It's a young man's game. Just give him the dignity of not being questioned about his decline.

Manning just sucks. Period. He has had a great supporting class throughout the years and now that class is slowly going away and he can' t keep up. Do I question his decline. No I don't. He is getting older and his actual playing ability is starting to show.

Oh yeah. Solid point. Forget the fact that he again came in the top six of all passing categories. Forget a third MVP season. He sucks. He's getting older, and not throwing downfield as much, sure. Still found a way to take a mediocre/below average Colts team to 12-4.
The Colts' problem isn't Manning. The Colts' problem is that they need to stop trying to rely on a small, speedy defense and realize that they need 1) a run stopper, and 2) a running offense. Without any threat of the run, play action doesn't work, and even Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark can't get open.

Manning the field general will be in the play-off mix next year again. His offensive line did not protect him like they should and there were alot of factors that brought the house down in a ball of flames. Harrison and Addai were not the caliber NFL players they were three years ago. With the injuries they the (Colts had as a team) how could they be a long season contender. They were sapped of strength, those who could play were worn out at the end. When they did get the key players back they could not get everyone on the same strength level. The Colts come from behind victories are not what you want your team to be known for altho it is a plus factor needed. Size is important on the Offense as well as the Defense. Off season drafting is key to another Division & SB victory.

Peyton Manning can't get it done in the postseason. He put up a mere 17 points against the Chargers. His lone TD pass came from a busted play when he caught the defense not paying attention. He continuely fails to put up points in the playoffs. In 7 of his 8 playoff losses he failed to score more than 18 points. How many times this year did a team score 17 points and win ? 32 out of 256 games. That's roughly 12% of the time. That means that if you score just 17 points you have roughly a 12% chance of winning. 17 points just isn't going to get it done. Here are some shocking postseason stats for you Manning faithful. He's had 15 playoff games. In those 15 games he's had over a 100 rating just 3 times. He's had multiple TD games just 4 times. Half of all his postseason TDs came from just 3 games. That's less than 1 TD a game for the remaining 11 games. In those remaining 11 games he has 7 Tds and 14 INTs with a combined rating of 67.4. Manning faithful try and take the total of his postseason stats and compare him to some of the great QBs like Brady or Montana. But if you look a little deeper you can see how those 3 or 4 games really distort the truth. Manning is a postseason failure.

January 14, 2009  02:21 PM ET

That's true coltsandleaffan -- but also broncosfan69 must remember that at least 2 of those games for Manning with a 100+ passer rating in the post season was against lowly Denver.

Denver sux and blew it this year. No reason to talk about Manning when you have Cutler throwing all those picks.

January 14, 2009  03:22 PM ET

What a joke of an MVP selection too. This league and it's LUST for QBs is sickening. Michael Turner or Adrian Peterson should've been MVP - they had stellar seasons. How about Albert Haynesworth for being the most unstoppable force on the league's best team all season long? Peyton Manning had a so-so year and won MVP. I guess if Brett Farce wouldn't have completely flamed out, the most overrated QB in the history of the game would've stood a good chance at getting another MVP he didn't deserve.

It is hard to believe that lack of knowledge when reading these comments. Playing QB in the NFL is quite probably the hardest position in sports. Peyton Manning plays at a level that far exceeds 99.9 % of the players who have played the position - and I have no doubt that the professionals (other players/coaches etc.) would agree with that. Judging by some of the comments, he gets the blame when they lose and the 'surporting cast' get the credit when they win. Peyton Manning joined the worst programme in football and has made an unbelieveable contribution in making it one of the best - I bet Tony Dungy would agree!

And if you want to see what a great role model Peyton is, just bear in mind this quote from the day he was drafted - when asked, after being picked no.1 'what will he do with all the money', Peyton's reply was 'I will earn it!!' - and he has year on year. Get real guys. Sure, as football fans, we love to have a go at each other's teams, but equally, as football fans, accept Peyton for what he is, one of the greats.

Didn't he win MVP and lead his team to 9 consecutive wins?
