The single-wing formation caught the Pats and Chargers by surprise but teams appear ready for it now. With Pennington playing well, should the Dolphins concentrate on their base offense instead?

I would say that the single wing and its variations are no longer gimmick plays for the phins but part of their base offense. Just as a single back set or 4 wide are play formations, the single wing is another formation in the play book for them.

They had to do it... with Pennington at QB and the WR's on the roster... teams can just stack the box and expect to stop the run... this offense isn't going to bomb the ball deep on you... they need some other looks to throw at the D... I'm hoping Henne learned alot and emerges before too long... while Pennington has done a good job bringing this team back from being horrible, he just isn't the long-term answer

They went from 1-15 to 11-5. As far as I'm concerned, they could have run the Wishbone, Veer or T-formation. Dan Henning's ingenuity helped this team make huge strides, first and foremost by believing in themselves (which had a lot to do with Pennington's leadership), and the success of the "Wildcat" was a big part of that. It was fun football, the players were having fun, and that's HUGE!

Offenses have to push the envelope to contend with Zone Blitz, Cover-2 and the Ravens' 2-5. It's just the natural evolution of the game. I can remember when the single-back was considered a gimmick. Three WR's a TE and one back brought the Bills to how many Superbowls? Granted, they were 0-4 (wide-right?), but they were there and putting up huge numbers. What about when the Redskins and their H-back offense was introduced to compensate for the Giants 3-4 with Banks and LT? Or, when the No-Huddle or the 4-wide sets of June Jones were considered gimmicks? Now, they are staples of the game, and every team has them in their repertoire.

I say, whatever keeps the defenses guessing is fine. Because, when a good defense is in a rhythm, they are dangerous. And, as the Phins add more offensive weapons, i hope they throw new and crazier wrinkles into the "Wildcat"!

The wildcat would be incredible if Tebow would have joined the draft and you put him in at qb instead of Pennington just during the Wildcat plays. Defenses wouldn't know how to prepare for that. I know its far fetched but you have to agrre he would be perfect for that situation. pennington is almost useless when he lines up as a reciever but Tebow can catch and run.....I'll keep dreaming!
