NFL  > Miami Dolphins  > Is Ted Ginn Jr. still a draft bust?
October 27, 2008, 10:44 PM
He had 175 yards against the Bills in a breakout game last week. Is it time to stop all the jokes about "Ted Ginn's family?"
November 6, 2008  03:49 AM ET

agreed. people are too impatient these days.. now that he has a year under his belt, he has become effective. no bust at all.

November 6, 2008  04:54 AM ET

A "breakout game" yeah right. he really showed us all with his 38 yds against Denver's horrid pass defense. Ginn had a 175 yds against the Bills because Dick Jauron thought Terrence McGee was 100% and instead of going to the rookie Mckelvin Jauron stuck with Mcgee and got burned. Unless Ginn plays against corners that are 50-75% for the rest of the season he wont have another 100+ yd game. of course they do play the Bills again so who knows what jauron will do that game

Ginn wasn't worth that high of a pick, it's too late to fix it... he could become an OK #2 or 3 option, but he isn't gonna be the man. And his return skills haven't really even been that great, Bess is back there on Punts or kickoffs? while Ginn takes the others. Right now, without a BIG WR (maybe a #1 guy) Ginn cannot be said to be any more effective than Camarillo (before injury) or Devone Bess... so IF they get that Big WR maybe he will be adequate next to Camarillo and Bess, but I'd still say a bust for the #9 pick

I was disappointed in the pick, although I was pleased they passed on Quinn. I don't think Quinn will have much success. The truth is, it was a thin draft, because other than Darrelle Revis, who else in that first round has done anything?

January 17, 2009  10:57 PM ET

I wasn't thrilled with the pick, but I'm glad they passed on Brady Quinn. Truth is, it was a thin draft. Besides Darrelle Revis, name a guy in that draft taken after Ginn that has done anything in the NFL.

Ginn is the greatest thing to happen to Miami in a long long time. We are lucky he is not a free agent or he might be snapped up by a team who already has a former star receive from Ohio State such as the Bucs or Steelers.......one team with too many Ohio State players would be too dangerous............

January 18, 2009  01:13 AM ET

Ginn is the best thing that happened to the Dolphins. We are lucky he is not up for free agency or he might be snapped up by another team with yet another Ohio State wide receiver super star and then they would have two........Bucs, Steelers, Others........

January 18, 2009  07:54 AM ET

HE HAS BEEN A BUST SO FAR BEING A DIE HARD DOLPHIN FAN BUT THE TALENT IS THERE AND I STILL HAVE HOPE.

January 18, 2009  08:01 AM ET

i wouldnt say he's a bust but he was certainly a REACH and hasnt shown anything to me to warrant being worth the 9th overall pick in the draft

um how about calvin johnson? BEAST just needs someone to get him the ball consistently. for some reason a guy by the monicker of AD comes to mind......thats right Adrian Peterson, need i say more? micheal griffin and aaron ross have been balling as well. Dwayne Bowe just needs someone to get him the football, but i would take him over ginn jr anyday even though he doesnt play special teams like ginn does

thats just the first round

January 18, 2009  09:58 AM ET

Adrian Peterson was taken before Ginn.... and Bowe has the luxury of being lined up next to Tony Gonzalez. Who has Ginn lined up next to? David Martin? LOL

January 18, 2009  10:04 AM ET

Oh, and Calvin Johnson was the second pick over-all!

ok for the end of the season this season who has calvin johnson lined up w/? no one if ur open, ur open!

i guess ur talking about players that were taken behind him so in that case the defensive side of the ball has some true ballers that are better talents that ginn

aaron ross
micheal griffin
reggie nelson has been playing solid for j-ville
bowe-doesnt have a qb getting him the ball
look at the 29th pick that year ben grubbs a true balla w/ the ravens
greg olson-true talent at the TE position but doesnt have a qb

theres a wealth of talent before and after ginn even in the later rounds of that draft, it seems to me u just want to sell yourself on the fact that he wasnt a REACH of a pick....was he worth a #9 overall NOT A CHANCE, is he a 1st round pick? NOT A CHANCE!

January 18, 2009  10:33 PM ET

If it were up to me, they would have traded down. I didn't like the pick, but in a THIN draft, wait, VERY THIN draft, they took a shot. Needless to say, to call a second year receiver on a rebuilding team, who has had two different coaching staffs, three different QB's and undrafted receivers lining up around him a bust is kinda retarded.

Will he ever be a serviceable player? No one knows. But, as a Dolphin fan for over 30 years, I certainly hope so. Why would I defend the pick anyway? It was the previous "braintrust" (I use that term loosely) that thought he was worth a shot. I just think it's silly as all heck to call him a bust before he's 25.

If you've got a stiffy for his demise, well how cynical to get off on failure. But, I'd like to see Aqua and Orange in the Super Bowl again, and I'd like to see him be a part of it. And, if he is part of it, it's because Parcells likes him. If the Tuna were to cut him tomorrow, then good riddance. But, as long as he has a sea mammal on his helmet, then I will root for his success.

Ted Ginn Jr. is not an NFL Draft bust. I say wait until next year. It will be his first year of having the same quarterback throwing to him in consecutive years since he was at Ohio State. Ginn's performance and no doubt suffered in the NFL because of the inconsistent play of the Dolphin's quarterbacks over the past 2 years. Now that the team has a high performance player in Chad Pennington Ginn will finally be able to live up to his potential and have a breakout performance and prove to be one of the top wide receivers in the NFL today.

January 22, 2009  10:27 AM ET

Bust I dont know, but he hasnt shown enough for the price tag. The phins need a go to guy and so far that hasnt been Ginn. Hope the draft or free agency gets us one.

January 25, 2009  12:36 PM ET

You can't really try to compare anyone to Ginn just yet. He's technically the #1 on the WR after Camarillo got hurt. Well when theres the # 1 out there, he usually gets double teamed, especially last year during the 1-15. Who did we have to throw to him... No one. This year we had Pennington BUT he can't stretch the field like a strong armed QB can. Once we get Henne or whoever our QB answer for LONG term that can launch a ball I think Ginn can get a distance between him and the defender...

January 25, 2009  10:15 PM ET

he deserves a roster spot, but not the #9 pick in the draft.

January 26, 2009  09:09 AM ET

put it like this camarillio was an undrafted free agent as where ginn jr was the overall 9th pick in the draft.....08 stats anyone?

cam man 55 catches 613 yds and 2 tds and no fumbles and sufferred season ending injury in week 12

ginn jr 56 catches 790 yds and 2 tds and no tds on special teams but had 3 fumbles

now my good people factor in that camarillo is making less than half what ginn is making and had his season cut short in week 12 due to injury and ginn BARELY had more yds than cam man, fumbled 3 times against cam mans 0, had 0 tds in the special teams game and i pretty much think it speaks for itself....funny thing about stats, they dont lie!

January 27, 2009  08:30 PM ET

ginn was absolutely not worth the 9th overall pick especially coming into the draft with a bum ankle and the ability not to run good routes and his special teams talent has yet to come in handy while devone bess is way better. ginn has decent hands to say the most and his speed doesnt come in to play if he cant get off the line. first round yeah sure but top 10 NO!
