NFL  > Indianapolis Colts  > Is Joseph Addai soft?
October 27, 2008, 11:29 PM
He's a dynamic runner but seems to miss a lot of time with injuries. Do the Colts need to look at a running back early in the draft next year?

Silly question. First time he's missed significant time, and his durability is getting questioned? Addai is a dynamic runner, and it's hard to name 3 better backs in the NFL that can catch the ball out of the backfield better than he can. Better to use the draft to shore up the defense (as usual) or work on the offensive line.

Not at all. He's not known for missing a lot of time. I think that his injuries and lack of production can be attributed to this make-shift offensive line. Think that as they come together, you'll see a more effective running game and less injuries.

I agree! we need to focus on getting an effective DT, and LB out of the draft.

I know that Dungy loves the small and quick combo, but unless we force their offense into obvious passing situations we can't get to the QB, teams will just run the ball down our small but quick throat! -keeping our offense off the field- causing less continuity on offense- and we lose.

Yes but not a 1rst rounder. Maybe a second or third round. They got bigger problems not just Addai.

November 21, 2008  02:16 PM ET

Not Just Addai, I didn't know Addai was a problem that is his first time missing significant time with a injury. Joseph never missed time in his days at LSU, and if I remember he did great as a rookie. I wish the Saints would've drafted him instead of Reggie Coush, I meant Bush.

November 25, 2008  02:45 AM ET

Silly question. Addai's a stud.

December 10, 2008  02:51 AM ET

You All are correct. Addai is a BEAST when it comes to mixing it up... He has the speed, agility, and talent to be threat as a RB and also as a slot receiver... The only reason many sports analysts are proclaiming that "he is soft" is becasue he is missing injuries... But why Joey Addai? he hasnt missed much of a season since his debut as a colt.... Which is great, but when it all comes down to it he's a rare talent, but also human... This is football people get injured, but that doenst suffice for them being less of an athlete... The Colts just need to make some arrangements with this offensive line that we have... pick up some fresh, persistent talent and we are in it! All in all Addai as i restate is a BEAST!!! Peace!!

He is a bust! Just over 500 yards and the season almost over (Thank God for Manning and the WR's). Rhodes should be the starter.

December 11, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Yes but that not a shock. Think about it Reggie Bush was soft last year. And he kind of soft this year. But he is a great player. So why would anybody attack Addai. For one bad year. Then we can say the LaDainian Tomilinson is a soft player for this year. That is a bad thing to ask. If somebody is soft. Oh say if Micheal Turner of Atlanta. Goes soft next year. Well oh is he to soft. No because he is one of the keys to Atlanta. The same for the Colts. Addai is not soft. He is a key to that team.

I think we should look for another running back because his numbers have been less and less since his rookie year. Granted the line has been very shaky but rhodes does seem to be running harder than addai this year. Addai is a very talented back but I am not sure that he is processing the game as fast as he needs to. He has looked very hesitant this year. I am looking forward to Mike Hart coming back healthy next year. If we can get him and Addai going together I think they could be the best two back system in the NFL.

December 16, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Oh what happened to Mike Hart (hurt) Oh he's soft BLAH BLAH BLAH!!

December 16, 2008  03:55 PM ET

I'm a huge Colts fan. How can you say that Addai is a "beast" though? He's averaging very little yards/game. Rhodes is outperforming him...just as he did in the Super Bowl in '06.

the thing with less numbers for ad daiis the fact that he's had less pt. rhodes is running harder bc he has something to prove in that he is a quality back, not worth being released and resigned over and over like he has been. and again, the injury thing with addai contributes to less pt. i dont think he's soft, or that we need another back next year in the draft. addai is still young, we have a solid back-up in rhodes, and when hart gets healthy he will be a third solid choice to stick in the backfield

I think Addai is a solid player. His injuriesbhave kept him from putting up better numbers this year. He is a good receiver

January 4, 2009  12:17 AM ET

Addai is not runnig hard at all. And if you watched the colts and chargers game tonight I am sure you would see that. Why did they not use Rhodes more?....They saw Addai was not prouducing why did they not rotate Rhodes more?. There is only so much you can blame on the offensive line... If Addai was THAT HURT.. he should not have been on the field. He is simpy not finishing his runs...and i think he has always been a terrible at short yardage.
He hesitates to much....some times you need to explode and don't think twice....LIKE SPROLES DID FOR THE CHARGERS...THAT IS A HARD RUNNER!

January 4, 2009  08:15 PM ET

First, I think Mike Hart will be a great back for the Colts, so there is no need to draft another one. Plus I think the RB draft class this year is weak. Instead, there are many directions they can go. maybe they need to try hard to draft someone like, DT Terrance Cody, or LB James Lurinites. Trade Addai for a high draft pick to get WR Michael Crabtree because as much as id hate to see it, I dont think Harrision will be around much longer. They may be able get Tory Holt at a discount price as a stop gap while they groom a young WR. I love big Bob Sanders but he just does not stay healthly long enough to be worth it. His presence is to stop the run game. I say Free up cap space by getting rid of him and signing Albert Haynesworth. We can afford it if we trade Sanders and Addai to free up cap space.

January 6, 2009  06:49 AM ET

I love Bob Sanders too...but Bobby hasn't put together a full season ..ever! His value is as high as it will ever be.plus Melvin Bullitt looks like he is ready to come through....trade Addai and Sanders, force Marvin to retire before he goes to jail...my prayers are with him, but I hate to see a great reciever put up crappy numbers with so much off the field pressure around him...the Colts need to sure up the D-line and get an explosive punt or kick returner through the draft....trade Addai for a chance to grab Crabtree out of Texas Tech and Bob Sanders to the Cheifs for Larry Johnson...

January 6, 2009  09:25 AM ET

Addai's obviously been a disappointment. The Colts offense makes it easy for a back who's only slightly above average (e.g., Edge) to put up huge numbers and he can't stay healthy or produce at that level when he is healthy.

January 6, 2009  05:04 PM ET

Addai is a Tiger and he will ALWAYS have heart! Geaux Tigers!

July 10, 2009  09:43 AM ET

I still say trade Addai for Braylon Edwards (may have to throw ina 6th or 7th rd pick also). Brown and Hart would be a great combo. I know Edwards drops balls but so does T.O. Plus he has Manning throwing it to him.
