NFL  > Kansas City Chiefs  > Thigpen? Culpepper?
October 28, 2008, 12:38 PM
Thigpen had his best game of the season week 8 against the Jets, but is that enough to prove he's ready for the job? The Chiefs were talking to Daunte Culpepper for a while, but that seems to be over. What should KC do at quarterback?

I like Croyle. He has a great arm. I think we need to stick with him in '09, but on a short leash. I wouldn't mind grabbing Sam Bradford or Tim Tebow either. Screw Culpepper. Thigpen would be an outstanding back-up.

I'm not convinced that Double T is the man just yet, BUT he has as good of 1st season starter passing numbers (especially TD/INT ratio) as Manning, Rothlesberger, Rivers, Brees, Brady etc....
Double T definitely has the POTENTIAL to be a tier 1 QB (Manning, Rivers, Brees). Given a full offseason programming and training camp where he actually gets some snaps I think he could perform in an under center NFL OFF as wel as just the pistol/shotgun format. -- Considering that he came into the season as the 3rd string developmental guy and was forced into starting before he was ready to be in the game, I'm fairly impressed with his development.
On the other hand, he has just as much chance of ending up a tier 2/3 QB (Collins, Garcia / Grossman, Orvlasky sp?) as to end up a winner. -- We just don't have enough information to go on yet.
I'd keep Thigpen penciled (not inked) as the starter for next season. Croyle can carry Huards bags (so he doenst hurt his hands) while Huard carries Croyle (so he doesn't hurt his knees and back) on their way to the airport.
I'd say were in the market for 2 QB's. One veteran in FAto challenge Thigpen, and one developmental guy in the 3rd-5th round of the draft. AND -- If the oppertunity to pick up Culpepper arrises; turn around and RUN (don't walk) RUN in the opposite direction.

i like tyler he's played some good ball this year. croyle cant seem to stay on the field. its an open competition for next season but honestly i dont think either guy will be the "answer" and i dont see the cheifs staying pat at the QB position. as a sooner fan i hope they dont draft BRADFORD, and as a football fan i dont think it would be a wise decision to draft a QB. they need a veteran as opposed to having 3 young guys with very little experience. if they draft a QB (even BRADFORD) he's not going to be ready for a couple of years so in essence you havent improved your team for "right now"

Croyle is done... He's a joke, thats thinner a piece of paper.. Hurt 1st game came back then Re-Injured his knee that he hurt in college? So, your telling this Chiefs fan to build off what...? Hopes and Dreams? .. Honestly not to sound rude.. If I'm GM - Get a O-Line Built this season right now. around Brian Waters (Veteran LG successor of Will Shields) Go Draft or F.A. a QB Young or Vet doesnt' matter Bring Both in with Huard(still under contract til '10), Thigpen. Or Draft a young qb and not look @ F.A. but Get a another Veteran to give competition to Huard letting him know its a open job can you get you get it. ? Keep it? IF I bring build you a Oline can you take us the distance.. (and you talk to him you let him know, do whatever it is you gotta do work out in off season etc. But no doubt 'Open Competition in K.C. @ QB'

Croyle is finished. He'll be let go in the upcoming weeks. Huard will follow him to the free agency line, where he'll likely sign on with someone as a third string QB. That leaves the Chiefs with the young Tyler Thigpin, a seventh round pick from ECU. He played pretty good, but he is not the guy you mortgage the future on. He'll be a good back-up, but probably won't be a starter in the league unless his decision making and comfort level improves drastically.

There's nothing wrong with drafting the highest ranked QB and letting him battle it out with Thigpin in camp. They'll probably end up getting Matthew Stafford from Georgia, but I would love to get Sam Bradford. Unfortulantly, he'll probably go to Detroit with the first overall pick. The job should go to Stafford (or Bradford), but it will depend on whether or not the offensive line gets shored up, the rookie gets to camp on time and he grasps the offense quickly. If these things don't happen, Thigpin will start the year at QB. Tyler can move well and he will be more adjusted to the speed of the game. There's nothing worst than throwing a promising young QB to the wolves with a terrible offensive line. Don't believe me??? Just ask David Carr.

Throw out any notions of the Chiefs going after Culpepper or any other player that they may have shown interest in the past. The Chiefs will have a changing of the guard, which means a new G.M., front office and most likely a new coach. Pioli is their #1 option followed by Chris Polian from Indianapolis. Both guys are smart football minds and unlike Peterson, they'll have a plan and direction that will build the team on youth, talent and balance. Mark my words... if Pioli doesn't leave for KC, he'll stay in New England!

With all due respect, Croyle has yet to win an NFL game as a starter if I remember correctly. And he gives the defense NO respect to taking off when need be because he is not mobile at all. Thigpen, as I agree with Texas Chief, showed a lot this year and has all kinds of potential. We have to stick with him from Day 1 of training camp as the starter, just like Atlanta did with Matt Ryan and the Ravens did with Joe Flacco. He won't become a Montana or a Bradshaw overnight, it takes time but we have to stick with a QB and go from there. Look at what happened to Minnesota and their QB carosoul. I felt that Frerotte gave them a better chance of winning and Jackson did nothing to disprove it by throwing yet another INT for a pick 6 that cost his team the game. Let Thigpen continue to develop and see what happens, not like we have anything more to shoot for at this time anyway

You guys really need to change the guard, it sickin's me to see the raiders come in there and beat you on your turf.

True, but the Chiefs only won two games all season long and still found a way to win in Oakland. The Al Davis Wrecking Machine has lost six years in a row to the Chiefs in Oakland, which is a franchise record. We suck, but the Raiders still find a way to suck even more!

Culpepper wanted too much money.

January 13, 2009  01:52 AM ET

Culpepper asked for too much money for a QB past his prime.

January 13, 2009  12:28 PM ET

Culpepper isn't worth the price of a cup of coffee.
And I'm not talking about an overrated 500 calorie sugar, milk, cream, froth, mocha and cinamon latte labeled cup of Starschmucks hot choclate; I'm talking about an $0.89 cup of Texaco black.

Thigpen did show promise this year, but look at his wins, wins are all that matter and he didnt get the job done. look at croyle, i had such high hopes for him this year(reminds me of a younger brett favre) but the little baby cant take a hit. so wher does that leave us?? LJ? lmao,, Lj is eating up salary that we need to use on the O-line. and Huard?? who is the idiot that thinks huard will have a shot as a starter??.. Time to start over Pioli,, take us home baby with a new team, and pray t gunz sticks around for another season.

January 16, 2009  03:23 AM ET

Thigpen impressed me this year, but did he put wins up? no. was it all his fault? no. so what do we do?? i had such high hopes for croyle this year(he is like a young brett favre with his gun of an arm) but the baby cant take a hit. and who was the idiot that said Huard will have a shot at starter? lmao.. damon who?? and while we are at it, kick LJ to the curb where he belongs and use that salary money to build the O-line. DO NOT draft a QB,, geez thats retarded too,, didnt we just do that??Use the draft pick to get some playmakers on the defensive line, and pray that Tony gives us another chance and plays another season. Lets do it Pioli,, get rid o Herm, build our team, and take us to the promise land,, or get out o KC.

January 16, 2009  03:30 AM ET

enough is enough. WE DEMAND THAT OUR BELOVED CHIEFS STOP BEING HELD BACK BY IGNORANCE. i dont blame herm as much as most, and im sorta impartial as to whether he stays or goes, maybe he needs ONE more chance.maybe he needs his **** thumped, but i will say this, this season i saw more incredibly stupid play calls than i ever have before,. onside kick when trying to hold a lead, going for 2 point conversion instead of extra point to tie, going for it on 4th downs instead of kickin field goals,, **** happened to our offense and play calls? I say bring Bill out of retirement and out of pittsburg.

January 16, 2009  09:28 AM ET

Keep Thigpen , draft Crabtree and get some 0 line help , dump LJ and in 3-4 years they are playoff bound

January 16, 2009  02:15 PM ET

Montana! KC is about as playoff bound as anyone in the AFC west, which isnt sayn much...All the talk about a few moves making KC a playoff contender is a joke, that would be a serious turnaround if that happens, and all the praise if they can pull it off!.... Hey, denver will trade you its entire d line for LJ? Thats fair right:)

Funny...a lot of people said the same thing about the Falcons and Dolphins last year. Look what they did in one year.
