Did the Chiefs ask for too much for Tony Gonzalez? Would they have been better off taking a third-round pick for him, or were they right to ask for more?

They were not offereed a 3rd round pick for him. They were offered 3rd round at BEST with playing numbers/starts etc that could possibly reduce it from a 3rd all the way down to a 5th.
On top of that the Chiefs would have had to pay his bonus out of their cap, instead of going with the trade.

For a straight up gaurenteed 3rd, they should have made the trade. For the incentive deal and bonus payout I'd have demanded a 2nd-4th window.

Part of what this team needs is a strong dedicated player to be a leader for the young players on this team. Someone who won't quit when he doesn't get his way. Someone who will give his best under any conditions. We really can't lose the talent and leadership that Tony brings to this team!

gonzalez played incredibly down the stretch, he keeps himself in awesome shape and is still one of the best tight ends in the league ... can't give him up unless they get more

The Chiefs are better with him. If he wasn't there for Thigpen to lean on, then there would have been many,many more 3 and outs. He also keeps pressure od Bowe. Without his presence there would have been much less of a chance to evaluate the other players on offense. I'd like to see him go win a ring, but I'd like it more to see him stay and help this team grow into a winner.
