NFL  > Carolina Panthers  > Delhomme's Future
October 28, 2008, 04:03 PM
Despite his age and his surigically repaired elbow, this guy continues to perform. How much longer of a timetable do you think Delhomme has in this league?
November 6, 2008  10:08 PM ET

I predict he'll be a Steve Beurlein-type, playing until they have to carry him off the field. They shoulda never gotten rid of Steve.

November 10, 2008  01:18 PM ET

His career is over now he is just playing on borrowed time. If Carolina had a descent back up, Delhomme would be a seat warmer.....

November 11, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Delhomme should be a bench warmer, the way he played Sunday. He only had seven completions and four interceptions. He only completed three more passes to his players than he did to Oakland players. How much wore off could we have been with the back up QB. It is time Carolina uses a draft pick for his replacement.

November 11, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Sparkey, Tadpole, Panthersbravo, I hear you. I really do. But I've gotta say that I would still rather have Delhomme on the field than anyone else behind him and maybe anyone else in the league NOT because he is the best quarterback. He makes poor decisions sometimes, has off days from hell, etc., etc.
BUT there's something that happens when he's on the field. The team just seems more energetic, more unified, and really just happier overall. I think Jake feeds off of intensity and he couldn't get fired up to play a Raiders team that ranks in the bottom three in all four major team statistics (total rush offense, total pass offense, total rush defense, total pass defense). This is a fault of his, no doubt. But I guarantee that if the game had suddenly become close at the end, Jake would have "switched on".
Normally, I would give Jake an overall grade of B-. But I'd put his value for the team at an A+.

Bad days happen for no reason, Delhomme is still one of the best in the NFL, he brings to much to this team when he is on the field and anyone who cries "bench him" doesnt have a true understanding of football

November 16, 2008  11:52 AM ET

I would keep him on the team for one more season, and go through the offseason, or through the draft, and pick a quaterback, in the thrid round or trade ken lucus alone with a 2010 third round pick for a second round pick in the 2009 draft

November 16, 2008  12:12 PM ET

His career is over. He couldn't even do anything against the Raiders. Com on he's done. What have bad quarterback. Bring in a new face you play.

November 18, 2008  11:51 AM ET

I just happy to see a player from USL playing QB in the pro's. Yes I said USL because when he was there it was still the University of Southwest Louisiana and not this University of Louisiana at Lafayette crap. Go Cajuns!

November 18, 2008  02:18 PM ET

Don't be too quick to judge. Jake's arm looked good the first half of the season but he's been way off since the bye week. I'll wait and see how the Atlanta game goes before I make a judgement. Was his focus amis due to the quality of the teams they were playing? I'm looking for him to be back to the way he was the first half of the season this week. If he isn't, then I believe that his arm has given up on him.

He was playing against the only solid part of the Raiders, their secondary (the Raiders are 12th-ranked against the pass). And he had a bad day, not very surprisingly.

In four of his ten starts this year, his QB rating was well over 100. He's also led his team to an 8-2 record. Sure doesn't sound like his career is over to me.

So, let me guess...you're a Saints or Bucs fan?

November 20, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Delhomme has definately added some stamina to Peppers! I guess you could call that team leadership. If he where a car most would trade him! I'm a total Panther guy and Delhomme is only good for commercial advertisement during the game. Have you noticed how many times the game goes to commercial so Carolina can get the punting unit on the field. Frankly, it makes for a boring and aggravating TV program. Fox needs to put someone new in this position soon and use Delhomme as he should be, a back-up!

November 21, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Watching him .....this team ....at times is painful, and always stressful. You can never be sure which team/player is going to show up. I think Delhomme should stay; just have to grit our teeth and bear it when he throw those wild throws they leave everyone going "Huh??".

December 13, 2008  09:03 AM ET

I give him maybe another 3 years. He's had some bad games this year but who hasn't? He's a good quarterback I pick him for my fantasy teams every year and he delivers when really needed. I would like to see Matt Moore get some time under center when they are blowing somebody out and there's only a few minutes left in the 4th quarter.

December 13, 2008  09:38 AM ET

2 years tops

December 13, 2008  09:39 AM ET

correction....2 years tops as a starter, he might be a backup for about 4 years after he's no longer a starter........

December 13, 2008  12:25 PM ET

Get rid of Delhomme! Are you crazy???

December 13, 2008  05:26 PM ET

Well Jake is a some time QB some time he will show up and play good ball an some time he wont you never know what you will get with Jake. But I like him as our Panther QB he is a very emotional/passionate leader an he motivates others well. But as all good things must come to an end I STRONGLY feel after this season we need to search for a feature QB to lead our Panther squad but still keep old Jake around to

December 15, 2008  09:12 AM ET

If we had to depend on Jake to win games we would be 8-8 at best at the end of the year.

ANd I quote you are retarded. That is such a bull statement with the way he and Steve work together. Delhomme is a pressure cooker quarter back. If you are down and it is close in any 2 minute drill you wouldn't want anyone but Jake. All good things come to an end but Jake was awesome in 03, 05, even 06 when we were playing with third string running backs the whole year!!!!!

Delhomme does exactly what he is asked to do and it has worked for quite a few years now. He's not the sexiest QB, statistically speaking, but when the game is on the line, Jake is at his best. What more could you want? He has engineered the most fourth quarter comeback drives in the NFL since 2003. That's the bottom line. He'll know when to hang the cleets up. Maybe in a few years after the Panthers win a couple Super Bowls.
