NFL  > Carolina Panthers  > Peppers worth the money to keep?
October 28, 2008, 03:57 PM
This guy is a beast and has had some great years. Do the Panthers find a way to keep him since he is a free agent at the end of the season?

Hopefully they learned their lesson after Mussin. There just some player you DO NOT let get away.

They need to definitely keep Pep. He is a rare athletic talent, and when you have a player like him who can dominate any game, you DO NOT let him just walk away.

November 25, 2008  06:22 AM ET

I say no he is not worth the money sure he can be dominating what 5 or 6 games a season. All I have heard since he became a pro player is of his greatness but look at his stats. A great player dominates game after game. I also put some blame on the coach to me it does not make sense to drop your best rusher into coverage when you need to pressure the QB.

I am confident that Pep will finish out his career at Carolina.

I doubt that. I think Peppers will get traded or released before the end of his career.

Look are you people crazy I AM A TRUE CAROLINA PANTHER FAN!!!!! PEPPERS IS A MUST FOR US SO HECK YES HE IS WORTH KEEPING

I would sure love to see him line up opposite Demarcus Ware. Pretty sure Jerry would pay him too. Could never happen though because we drafted Spencer to replace Ellis. So sad.

Peppers better stya in Carolina. It is his home for more reasons then one and we love him here!

January 8, 2009  08:56 PM ET

If the Panthers keep him can we sign him to one year contracts so he'll have an incentive every year to work his behind off? Make every year a "contract year."

January 9, 2009  03:52 AM ET

It would be very foolish to let him go.

January 9, 2009  09:30 AM ET

As much as I love Pep, I have to face the facts, he hasn't lived up to the hype. He has so much talent, but I question his "motor". Year in year out he has been on the radar for preseason defensive player of the year, but when the season gets going he has almost always just ended up with a good season or a solid season, never a great season that I think everyone agrees his is capable of.

I see the Panthers putting a tag on him this year and working out a deal with him, but I think he could get more money on the open market. So it will come down to how much he wants to be a Panther, I hope he will stay.

January 9, 2009  09:39 AM ET

As much as I love Pep (I own 2 of his jerseys), I would hate to see the panthers put a huge cap number on him especially after last season. Talent-wise he is the best DE in the game, but I question his motor.

They will most likely try to put a franchise tag on him this year and try to work a deal with him, but the kind of money he would get on the open market is astronomical and I think the panthers have some folks on that defense that they want to keep, Beason for instance. I will all boil down to how much Pep wants to be a Panther. An Al Davis might make him the highest paid DE in the league, but who wants to play for that nut. I hope they can keep him.

What a moron. You know nothing about football. How many times has a QB missed Pep dropping into coverage resulting in Pep making a play on the ball. Doesn't matter if it's a sack or a pass defended, making a play is making a play. You must have grown up playing soccer huh?

January 9, 2009  11:57 AM ET

He isn't going anywhere. He is going to get a huge contract and he deserves it. If he leaves the Panthers have absolutely NO pass rush. Getting Otah was great and it helped this year but now they don't have a 1st round pick this year. They need another DE that can pressure the QB. It has been Pep and Pep alone doing that this year.

January 9, 2009  01:44 PM ET

Well PEP just got named 2nd team All-Pro along with Steve Smith and DeAngelo Williams. But, Jon Beason and Jordan Gross were named 1st Team! I personnaly think Pep deserved 1st team status over Justin Tuck, but these things are really subjective. Either way, I believe that Carolina needs to try to keep him.

Charles Johnson (2nd yr. from Georgia, 6 sacks) has looked good this year and should be very good with a little more experience. Tyler Brayton has also played well this year.

Defensively the Panthers were pathetic Saturday night. The D-line couldn't generate any heat on Warner all night, though his receivers were wide open. The defense seems so...vanilla to me. We played zone all through the first half and then finally we matched Gamble up on Fitzgerald in the 2nd, when it was too late. You have to point the finger at Trgovac.

Pep had a good year, but he lacks fire! I don't think anyone knows how to motivate him, he is an enigma in the NFL. He is supremely talented, and is okay with things the way they are. I do not want the Panthers to spend leadership dollars on a guy who doesn't want to be a leader. If he had the fire of Jared Allen or Shawn Merriman, teams would not be able to handle him, but he...just doesn't have that. He is an elite talent with a role players mentality, I suppose that is okay, but not if my team has to pay big bucks to keep him around.
