NFL  > San Francisco 49ers  > Should the 49ers permanently hire Singeltary after the season?
October 29, 2008, 10:57 AM
I think only time will tell. Singeltary's rant following his first loss will either make or break the 49ers for the rest of this season.

If it breaks them, do they bother hiring him or just gut the entire staff and start from square 1?

I hate to break it to everyone...but as soon as the Bears job opens up, Mike is gonna jump on it! He's just proving his worth as a head coach right now so he can get the Bears job once Lovie starts slipping...personally, I'm hoping we start grooming Rathman for the job!

Singeltary has proven to be a likable guy as far as a fan goes. At first I didn't like the idea of the iron defensive guy being the head coach since I am such a fan of Bill Walsh. Bottom line I think if he improves the team and comes close to the playoffs give him a full time job. If he jumps or gets fired I don't think all is lost. Mike Shanahan and Mike Holgrem are still out there, both offensive coordinators in the 49ers best super bowl seasons; 89 and 94.

After watching this afternoons 49er/Cardinal game, my impressions is Singeltary has the Niners playing tough hard nosed football and has the team buying into his philosophy. Good luck this year Niner fans your off to a good start and I hope Coach Singeltary does for you as a Coach what he brought to us Bear fans as a player.

I liked the way he called the D over when Warner started getting some momentum going. It seemed to work as that was the begining of the end for the Cards

Great move to give Singletary the job permenatally.....believe he has the team heading straight to the Playoffs. Though being a long time 49er fan....Id much rather see someone like Rathman or Holgren in there...keep it in the family!

I am a long time 49er fan and I think Singletary is going to be an asset to them. Yes Holgren and Rathman have been there, but this team needs someone tough to get them back to the winning team they were. They need help offensivly and more could be done for the defense.

I will admit, I have lost some excitment for this team and a match up against the Colts looming on the horizon is quite scary at this point in time. That being said, I don't think it is a coaching issue more than it is a fresh system with players that are going through confidence issue.

DAMMIT!!!! We need a pass rusher pronto. Willis has shown he can rush the QB but we can't take him away from his game or we lose the elite run stopper and the TE coverage. Who's out there to trade for. Peppers?! I'll take him, how bout you?

Back to the topic, I like Singletary, we are in the position to be the best team out of the "NFC" west for the next few years if not this year. Who I DON'T like is Jimmy Raye. If we play Smith this week we need to come out firing. But I'll bet we do the same thing until we fall behind again. Run, run and pass on 3rd and 8. What the hell happened to Gore? Sure cut him some slack because he's missed a few weeks, but that was his second HORRIBLE game of the year. Anyways, back to Raye.. I'm certain we will be shopping for YET ANOTHER O.C. which will be another setback unless Turner gets canned and we get him back.

After this week,(maybe we win?) We will be back on track I do believe, I will be rooting for ARI to lose either way, we hae blown a 2 game lead to them and we need it back. DAMN you Giants!

The dream team would be to have Holmgren as GM, Shannahan as Coach, Rathman is happy as a Running Back Coach for now. The 49ers need to replace Singletary because he is unwilling to part with Jimmy Raye, end of Question. If I'm Jed York I'm calling Homgren and Shannahan every night until one of them commits to being the 49ers head coach, or offensive coordinator, in which case Singletary can stay. Like I said at the beginning of the season the 49ers will not make the playoffs, will be lucky to make 8-8 but 7-9 seems more likely.

I think you have to give him the entire year and see what happens. Let's not be the Raiders and go through like 3 coaches a year

You guys do know that this board was posted a year ago (October 29, 2008) when Singletary had the "interim" attached to his title?

Just saying.
