I've read two or three different articles this winter talking about bad contracts in baseball, and I have seen the Lohse contract mentioned in all of them. The basic story line is that Mozeliak screwed up by giving Lohse four years at $41M after just one good season as a Card.

Granted, 2009 was a pretty big disappointment for Lohse, but I think much of that had to do with injury. If Dunc can get Lohse back anywhere close to his 2008 performance over the next couple of years, I think we may consider Lohse a bargain. Consider the following contracts that were signed in 2008 and 2009:

Ryan Dempster, Cubs 4 years, $52Million (2009-2012)
Derek Lowe, Braves 4 years, $60Million (2009-2012)
Mark Buerhle, White Sox 4 years, $56Million (2008-2011)

A case could be made that those guys have better resumes than Lohse, but in my opinion, they aren't THAT much better than the 2008 version of Lohse. I'm glad we signed Lohse rather than overpay for someone like Lowe. Lohse does have a full no-trade that Mozeliak could eventually regret, but I still think his contract is pretty reasonable.

What do you think? Did we over-extend for Lohse?
