I'm gonna say Bob Gibson in 1968. When you read his stat line for that year, it looks like a misprint. His ERA was 1.12 ... he threw 13 shutouts ... he had 28 complete games out of 34 starts.

He went 22-9 and all you can think is ... how the hell did he ever lose nine games? Well, eight of them he lost either 1-0 or 2-1.

With any luck at all he would have been 30-1. Nobody ever topped that.
