NFL  > Chicago Bears  > Anyone pumped about the Bears this year ?
June 22, 2010, 01:02 AM
Can we possibly sink to the lows of last year with our new look team?

After enduring one of the worst ever performances of a Bear's defense ... surely we don't come close to that this year. Urlacher has had a whole year to recuperate and find his hunger for football again. No way the horror of Hillenmeyer drags us down to last year's depths again. Pisa's back (but for how long?). Chris Harris is back. Marinelli has had another year with Harrison, Izzy, Adams and Anderson. He's also got some dude called Julius Peppers in the mix. Is that not one of the best front sevens in football? Our lack of depth in the secondary should be alleviated by the improved pass rush this year.

Offense? Blocking was atrocious last year for a number of reasons. Frank 'omelette' Omiyale and Orlando Pace being two of them. Chris Williams out of position at RT being another. Harry Hiestand in his infinite wisdom as line coach removed blocking sleds from practice these last five years. Amazingly, he also instructed his linemen to take a step 'sideways' as their initial step - I kid you not. Instead of exploding forward off the snap, they were meekly 'stepping sideways' for reasons best known to Harry.

Wrong Turner's insane play-calling is gone, replaced by the inventive mastermind Mike Martz. . Mike Tice has replaced Harry Hiestand. Back come the blocking sleds, forward go the blockers at the snap. Mr. Manumaleuna will no doubt improve blocking as our very expensive TE addition should. We also have two very intersting prospects in Lance Louis who is known for his quickness and second-level blocking thirty yards downfield - the man was born to pull wide on counters. Johan Asiata is a man-mountain and smart to boot. Beekman was playing out of position last year at guard. If Kreutz is slow to recover - or just slow - Beekman willa cquit himself well at Center, his natural position. Chris Williams is a stud at LT as he showed in the last two games last year. Remember him shutting out Jared Allen all on his lonesome?

So we'll have a better coached line with some new, younger faces on it ... and lets see who'll they be blocking for. Matt Forte wasn't right last year - playing with a damaged MCL and a niggling hamstring - all on the same leg. He's back to full fitness. There's also the small matter of the addition to the roster of perhaps the most under appreciated back in the league, Chester Taylor. Two number one RBs in the backfield with the exciting Kahlil Bell in reserve. Two guys that can run, catch and block. Not bad.

Oh, and there's Jay Cutler. Asked to throw the ball a ridiculous 555 times last year - a Bear record - no way that happens again. Our ability to run the ball this year will take the pressure off Jay and really open up the passing game, or spring him into the flats on naked bootlegs. Where he'll find .... 6'7 Kellen Davis or Greg Olsen ... or Shabba sprinting across the field, who announced his presence to the world on his only two starts at the end of last year putting up premier numbers. Shabba will stretch the field for us more than the short, but fast Hester and the similar Johnny Knox

Who do you cover on the Bear's offense. Martz will have the play to kill you no matter who you cover. Oh ... and Cutler is an excellent scrambler and has the strongest arm in the NFL.

NFC North beware.

It could be the other way around, with the offense carrying the defense if we lose a cornerback!
I can't wait to see the D-line though. I trust Tommie when he says he's back, apparently in mini-camp he impressed. A Tommie/Peppers tandem means Izzy/Harrison/Anderson/Adams will explode, and with the linebackers we have ... we won't need to blitz out of desperation like we did last year. At least with CH back there at safety we'll have somebody to shout at people and get them up to speed. Hopefully we stay free of injuries to compensate for Angelo's puddle of a roster.

GSH 1 this is what is written in the "Intangibles" section of the Cowboys in "Lindy's Pro Football 2010 preview. Romo is in his fourth season with Garrett as his offensive coordinator. Just ask Peyton Manning and Tom Moore how important comfort and continuity is between quarterback and play-caller. Thought you might enjoy it. Go BEARS!!!

You know what Burns the Corner backs and secondary worse than anything is that quick inside slant, the Bears have coached the Corners to play off 5 yards or more partly out of respect for the top W.R.'s and partly due to lack of coverage skills of the corners, they are taught to try and keep all plays in front of them rather than be aggressive and play bump and run, they are also taught to take away the outside and funnel everything towards the middle for linebacker and safety help. Look for this especially if the D-Line is getting that pressure we all hope they will be able to bring this year. It's all part of that bend don't break philosophy sorta like the prevent defense that prevents you from winning.

I have done 3 predictions on the Bears record in 2010. Barring injuries I have them doing as well as 14-2!!!! The worst is 4-12???? Offensively alot depends on two major things, 1st the Offensive line, will we be able to protect Jay?? and will we be able to run the ball when the weather gets bad? 2nd it usually takes teams TWO!!! years to learn and be able to effectivly change over an offensive scheme. If Martz can do it in one it will be the first time he has been able to do so. Now the Defense. Julius Peppers will make the opponents double and triple team him. This will make the rest of the D-line much more dangerous to opponent Qb's trying to pass. This will also improve the linebackers and D-backs due to the fact that they won't have to cover for as long as in the past. However it won't matter if Lovie has the corners play off by 10 yards as in years past. Now I come to the big problem I see with the Bears this year, The Opponents Running game. I feel that all the teams on our Schedule have the ability to run the ball except for a very few. I fear that we might not be able to stop anyone from running on us and controlling the ball thus taking the ball away from our "explosive offense". It all depends on our ability to stop the run. If we stop it we will have a good season. If we can contain the Jets on Dec26th it will prove that Lovie and Co might not be lame ducks in the playoffs if we make it that far. So the way I see it injuries past (Meaning how Urlacher, Kreutz etc come back and play) and future, the O-line, learning the Offense, and if our defense can stop our opponents running on us will determine if we are sucessfull this season 2010.

Way to go out on a limb predicting between 4 and 14 wins!

As a die hard Bears fan I am somehwat optimistic about this season.1 - Staying healthy, as always, will be everything2- Road game in Toronto is pretty much a home game (More Bears fans than Bills fans)3- Cutler must improve - - Martz will help 4 - Forte/Taylor combo will reshape the entire offense 5 - We need one rookie on defense to step it up

It's great to see someone that is optimistic about the Bears playing for 3rd in the division!

Those slants go away if the middle/inside linebacker jacks up a couple receivers on that route.

Agreed Jack, in the case of the Bears last year they were blitzing trying to get pressure on the Q.B. for the lack of pressure the ends were getting, and not home in most cases. Either that or doing that crowd the line of scrimmage thing trying to fool the offense and getting caught out of position.

Hopefully with the addition of Peppers a healthy Harris, Urlacher being back and this year will be a different story. Only time will tell and what we all are waiting on the season to start and see how it all plays out.

Playing for third spot only in your eyes only, playing crystal balls again?

July 2, 2010  07:01 PM ET

Were Bears fans not faithfully optomistic when the Bears went 1-13 in the 70's? Are Lion fans not optomistic this year or Bills fans? A true fan is always rooting for his/her team no matter what the record. 3rd spot 7734 no!!! We're looking to go at least 10-6 or better and untill we lose 7 games will have faith (Even if delusional.) that they can pull it out. Because that's what being a true fan is all about. FAITH and Faithfullness !!! Go BEARS!!!

Right on Jim Go Bears and Go Chiefs.

All I am saying is that they will be LUCKY to finish ahead of the Lions.

Now that remains to be seen, of course we all have and are entitled to our opinions, but it's one thing to say it just to stir the pot and quite another if it's an honest opinion, however is is at this point in the season merely an assumption, guess, they are not call predictions for nothing. I bet no one seen the Dolphins rebounding from a 1-15 mark in 07 to a 11-5 mark the following season. In the NFL nothing is certain especially factoring in injuries players getting suspended etc. The Bears lost Urlacher early last year, Kreutz was playing and had been playing with a bone spur, Forte was hurt early in training camp and played hurt all season, the ends were getting older and had lost a few steps etc. Many changes has been made from last year to this year, of course it doesn't guarantee anything but to say a team is going to be worse before the season has even started is a skeptical assumption at best and when it's done in the fashion you are doing it, its pushing the Troll behavior limits.

Honestly: This may have been one of the most thorough starting posts that I've ever read on this site: This Guy's got it laid out well: Very Impressive: I lived in Berwyn years ago, so I have a soft spot for the Bears:

The 1 thing that could upset the apple cart: is Cutler:

He seems to suffer from a bad case of ELWAY ENVY and unless Martz can corral Cutler's ego, Cutler may snatch a loss from the jaws of victory, a few too many times this year.

WOW: You know, even if Granny comes back as your QB, I wouldn't say the Vikes have the division locked up:

I agree with the exception of the Elway Envy, he's not in Denver anymore and really has no reason to live up to the Elway standard. Luckman and McMahon are or should be his goals if Cutler wants to set his sights on something to shoot for in Chicago.

You hit the nail on the head with the Martz/Cutler relationship though and the season more than likely hangs on the that balance, Cutler needs to listen to Martz and take his criticism in stride, I see both Martz and Cutler both have similar character traits and as long as they can co exist with one another and not butt heads it could bode well for not only their careers and the Bears Team this year and in the future. If however they butt heads and things go south it could be a long season for us fans, the W.R.'s really have to step up as well in this timing system and be where they are supposed to be since the Q.B. throws to a spot where the W.R. is supposed to be. If not it will really make the Q.B. look worse than what actually is and cause so much turmoil it won't even be funny.

In one of the video's of Cutler throwing in OTA's I watched Cutler. His eyes/head were all over the place. On several plays he looked at 4 men/targets before he threw the ball. I think that Jay is getting the offense fine and if the recievers (WR, TE, or whatever.) aren't there they just won't get the ball thrown to them. Plus they just won't be on the field for long either. Go back and watch the video's and you will see what I mean. The camera angle was from the defensive end zone and is really obvious to see. Hearing Al Gore's (RB San Fran) perspective is really reassuring and helpful. Oh how I wish we could have gotten him in the draft 6 years ago.

Another thing about Cutler that has impressed me. He is (to me) the best QB since Marino in getting not sacked. Now considering how many times he was sacked last year that sounds like an absurd statement but with ANY other QB I think we would have had at least 1/2 again as many sacks. Between his legs, his quick release and his ability to feel the pressure his is easily the best QB I have ever seen in a Chicago Bears uniform since the mid 1960's. This year is his break out year and I'm sure he will pass for a Bears record this year not for throwing int's either. I just hope that if are able to replace Lovie this year that Martz is kept on for the Offense's stablility/continuity sake. Would the Bears consider replacing Lovie with Tice? Other than Cower he's the only option I like. I also prefer to keep a 4/3 defense but that's another story.

If Lovie goes I would imagine the whole staff goes, I've thought of a couple different scenarios where the Bears might promote Tice or Martz to head coach or Dave Toub. At this point it's really hard to tell what George will do, I hear he will be taking Michaels place at the end of this season as the new Chairman of the Board. He may want to totally clean house from Angelo on down and start anew, a way of putting his picks in place rather than deal with the Tampa connection in place now. Like I repeatedly have said the time to have made changes was at the end of last season so as to avoid a third offense system in as many years for Cutler. It all hinges on this season there is a ton on the line from coaches to players and one reason why even though I'm no fan of Lovie I would like to see some continuity for the teams sake.

Pump about the BEARS?!?! You guys better just being pessimistic that way you WONT be disappointed....the glass is NOT half full with the Bears. Its clearly half empty.

Are you kidding me? You should go back to football 101 if you think Cutler is the greatest Qb since he 60s..you are clearly DUMB!

Sounds like you are making excuses for Cutlers record number of INTs..hes a INT producing machine, was at Denver, what makes you think hes changed any? I see blame the WRs and the coaches. Typical.
