MMA  > Fight Club  > Lesnar the new 'face of MMA'?
November 16, 2008, 02:07 AM
When Kimbo's glory faded almost as fast as it arrived, I asked who you guys thought would be the next big thing in the sport. Is Brock Lesnar it? Now that he downed MMA legend Randy Couture, could the ex-WWE star be the face of mixed martial arts?
November 16, 2008  02:27 AM ET

Like it or not he is, both of his previous PPV were the highest selling PPV of the year and I'm sure this one topped both of them.

Plus he's the heavyweight champion and defeated the legend Randy Couture, add all that up and you have the new face of MMA.

November 16, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Let's just not forget that he's actually 31.

How many peak years does he have left?

November 16, 2008  12:52 PM ET

Yes, he's the new face of MMA for the time being. Media coverage and interest in the sport has reached a new high and the exposure will help the sport as a whole.

anyone who looked at kimbo at the face of MMA doesn't have a brain stem, and lesner is not, and never will be the face of MMA.... u must be joking even asking that question..... to the causal fan who doesn't know anything about MMA and just watches for the "human cockfighting" factor might think he is the new face of MMA but those people are also extremely stupid.....

November 16, 2008  05:42 PM ET

The new face? For now, Randy is still someone to be dealt with, also the man who just beat Tim Sylvia- the Russian I don`t know his name but he put a good ****-whuppin on Tim. I like Lesner however one good fight dosen`t mean a thing in the UFC

You have no clue what being the 'face' of a sport is.

In fact, you are a moron.

Since you can't name 'that Russian', your comment is what doesn't mean a thing here.

Man, you sure are up tight to call me names, wow,do you have a life? It`s all about enjoyment, after every fight the winner is the latest topic of talk, so for a few weeks that person is the face, however if you want to talk about who is the real face or the true fighter of MMA one would have to mention Anderson Silva or G.S.P. for now because in MMA you only stay on top for a short while. Now please don`t call me more names unless you can be funny, I enjoy a good laugh.

Lets put White's hope for a big money making name aside and think about this a minute. Lesnar has two wins that count for anything. Both were fights that were good match ups for him. Niether opponent is know for submissions which played to Lesnar's size and strength. He is nowhere near the complete package you see in a Silva, Penn or GSP. Lets have this conversation again when he has defended the belt two or three times against good well rounded opponents.

There's no way Brock Lesnar is the new face of MMA. The Really Face of MMA is Royce Grace. Fedor Emelianeko has been the face of MMA for the last 5 years. He only 32 yrs old with record of 28-1. Every Heavy fighter in world doesn't want to face this guy unless the are getting a lot's of money. Knowing that the UFC will never sign Fedor Emelianeko. His last fight the guy made $1.6 millions. He will be the greatest MMA fighter ever that never competed in the UFC(as of right now).

1)Tim Slyvia last only 42 second before he tap out.
2)Tim last 5 round with Randy and loss in decision.
3) Lesnar defeated Randy in Round 2(Randy gave up 40+ lbs).

What name did I call you?

Are you paranoid or something?

Seriously go back and read it up there and tell me what name you were called.

Yes, trust this short-bus rider.

His superb grammar, punctuation, and spelling clearly demonstrate his superior intellect.

Come on guys, cut the bad blood, no need for that

I wrestled with Lesnar (thankfully not at the same weight) in college and I can tell you this: his size and strength are his biggest assets, with his technique coming in a distant third. I believe that he WILL BE the new face of MMA. But not currently. There are the knuckleheads that think that the likes of Chuck Liddel and Kimbo Slice are GREAT fighters, but when it comes to technique, if all you have are two fists, you are eventually going down. As you saw in Lesnar's only lose, if you can stay away from his size, you can take him out with an ankle lock. I mean come on, when was the last time you saw an ankle lock make someone tap?! It just doesn't happen because most accomplished fighters can defend against it. That being said, I think that White is a smart promoter and will not put him in the ring with a technician until he has milked Lesnar for all he is worth.

"loss*"

As the face of MMA, hell no. As an emerging talent, yes. If he gets better accustomed to UFC fighting on the ground, he will be tough. His fight against Mir showed that he still has a ways to go in that regard. Otherwise, he is just so damn huge and strong to be ignored. Anything involving him standing with those ham hocks coming at anyone will be tough to beat. Give him time and he will be good. But he got a (half of a) title shot way too early, and we will see just how good he is against Noguera or Mir (part II).

And by the way, Anderson Silva will be the face of MMA until he loses or retires, and I think the latter has a greater chance of occurring first.
