NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Penn State Fans- Possible bad news next week
November 16, 2008, 02:09 PM
I don't want to be one starting rumors, but I heard this from someone on the inside:

My friend works for Beaver Stadium. After the game was over Saturday and I was making my way out of the stadium he caught up to me and told me something big was going to occur next week. I asked what and he stated that all he knew is that the athletic office contacted stadium operations and informed them that the Blue Band would not be playing at halftime next Saturday. I asked why and he said that Coach Paterno wanted to address the fans.

While he told me nothing specific, I can only imagine what would be so important that he would address the fans in place of the entire halftime show.

I hope it isn't what I'm thinking because lets face it- it would be the end of something that none of us in the Blue/White family, indeed none of us in all of college football will ever witness again.

Love PSU or hate them, you hate to admire what this man has done. I wouldn't trade the past 40-some years of having him for nothing!

QUOTE(#1):

But I can't wait to get into the Rose Bowl and show the college football world that PSU is no fluke.

Nobody bleeds blue and white as much as I do, but I'm afraid if we play like we did the last two weeks, Mich State has a real good chance of winning. Needs to be a little improvement if we want to get to Pasadena. I don't think the Indiana game was as big a win as the score indicated. Passing was awful on both offenses. If Indiana had a little bit better passing game, I think we would've lost yesterday.

Maybe he`s gonna call out that referee that pissed him off a couple of years ago.

A couple of things that bug me about that speculation. It just doesn't make sense...
1) I seriously doubt JoePa would drop a bomb like that with one half of football to play and the Rose Bowl on the line. He has constantly made this season about his team, not himself.
2) He's not that mobile with the bad hip. Getting down to the field and back up again to the coaches box would be extremely difficult.
3) More likely scenarios... a reunion of players from the 1995 Rose Bowl team, or a reunion of players from the 2005 team, a special senior day activity for the graduating seniors.

It still may happen but I would be shocked and quite a bit disappointed in JoePa if he made the announcement that way.

I totally agree with your statement #1, in fact that was exactly what I thought to myself. But the more thought I gave it it seemed like it had to be something huge in order for them to totally cancel the halftime show. I've seen special presentations before like you mentioned in #3, but they always took place after the band was done.

Anyways, I hope you are correct.

If this is true. You hate to see great things come to an end but that is just it, great things have to come to an end at some point. It's obvious that his health is not what it used to be. He has the mind to keep coaching but not the body. If it is coming to an end you want to see him go out on top. I bet he coaches the second half from the sidelines.

Ain't gonna happen. psuinstl is right, we will not do anything that will distract the team, not during a game and not before a BSC bowl. He will have the surgery and come back for at least one more year, just like he did when he was hurt in the Wiscy game

From the last press confernece...

Q. Senior Day is a very emotional time for a lot of people, yourself included. It's my understanding that you are going to have a lot of players from past teams that are coming in for this game. About how many of those are coming in and what does it mean to you whenever you have these sort of reunions with your past players?

To be frank with you, I don't even know if they're coming back. I don't know who is coming back or how many. You ought to talk to Jeff and Guido about that. I don't know. I know we try to get as many back each week as we can. I think it's great that they come back and it's good to see a lot of them and get a chance to have a semi reunion with them, but I couldn't tell you how many are coming back. I really can't.

Fran Ganter does an awful lot of that work with our alumni and he would have a better idea of the numbers of people coming back, who is coming back, and what classes are coming back. I haven't even thought about it yet. It's Tuesday of a game week and I'm trying to make sure we make it as productive as we can.

This distraction may lead Penn State to possibly lose a game that alot of peopkle expect them to win. I just dont think the focus will be their this Sat. However there is the possiblity that the team will put it all on the line for thier coach.
