NFL  > General NFL  > 18 Games? No thanks!
June 30, 2010, 02:04 PM
I love football and I love watching it on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays but I don't want to see an 18 game season.

Some reasons why:
Tough enough to get 53 players through 16 games unscathed; lets face it none are unscathed and as you work your way down the roster the quality at the positions declines. Sure you are secretly thrilled when your divisional rival takes a big hit/season ender at a critical or All-Pro position but what when it is your guy? Every snap in the NFL is a risk and when December and January come I want the best players on the field to see the best games possible.

I hate pre-season and the veterans don't need 4 games, taking away two and making them paying games seem like a good idea in mid-August but see above on why I don't buy into that theory. Scrimmage the rookies and FAs then play pre-season games "3 & 4".

Talk of increasing the roster size; again just adding more players doesn't make the game better, just more mismatches. Can ANYONE tell me that the league has 32 good QBs? How about 64? 96 starts to sound ludicrous right, most teams have 3 QBs, well when more starters go down then you need number 97 and beyond to come on the field to hold a clipboard (you hope) but imagine that Mr. 97 has to take the field late in an important game in December...arrgh.

Think about your 3rd or 4th Safety or Corner, those guys will come on the field for something beyond Nickle packages and Kick Coverage. It's fun when your team is toasting that guy but not when it is your team getting burned.

Bottomline I like my football like my Vodka, triple refined! High-School, College, and NFL. 3 levels of improvement and better tasting at each level. You can keep that bottom shelf stuff.

What are the thoughts of the illustrious Summer Panel on this subject? Pro or Con? And Why?

I like your thoughts +40...

It's really going to come down too what happens with the CBA talks and Rookie Contracts. They really need to stop over paying rookies. Rookies contacts are really killing the game right now. **** Russell was a prime example of that. Once that is handled a 18 game season should be do-able when it comes to paying the extra game checks.

I really can't decide how I feel personally. I would love the extra games as a fan of football but as a old school fan, I'm not going to like seeing NFL season records breaking because of these two games... Imagine if Chris Johnson had a extra 2 games to break Eric Dickersons single season mark or Drew Brees breaking Marino's single season mark. Stuff like that will get to me, Even gets to me now when so many records were built on a 14 game season. However, the NFL loves that stuff. I hope they put some disclaimers on certain records that took 14 or 16 games. With a 18 game season, Retired players have a pention, Something that is lacking right now for retired players.

+40,I like the idea of 18 games[do preliminaries in July and start the season in august!!!],as far as expanding the roster? Nah,But too give another scenario is boxing went from 15 rnds too 12,too it's ultitmite detriment as a sport, and adding all of those BS "Titles" also. These ahtletes are being paid Big Bucks,so let them earn it,2 more games would make a heck of a change and Football is a major American sport that those 2 x-tra games would generate more money and jobs also.Besides they have the practice team and ufl too go too ifn needed for x-tra players..too substitute with..Just start a month earlier,What's the big deal?with expansion Teams coming Up,they're gonna have too make room for teams of Cities that want a Football team..So,I feel an 18 game season would help in that regard,There's alot of talent out there that just needs an avenue too see ifn they can cut it,What's wrong with that?imo

EZ,
expanding the league is another bad idea. Small markets like Greenbay (I know there are others or some may feel that Greenbay is not a small market....) have a long and storied of football support and greatness yet Jacksonville is dying. SOme say Jacksonville is struggling against the hysteria that is College football in Florida. The latter is an example of why not toexpand.

Can anyone here name me 2-4 cities that could support an NFL team? Let's make this harder and not allow cities who already failed the test (Los Angeles x 2).

No way San Antonio Texas could (top 10 city in the country based on Population) b/c bet 90% of the city is Cowboys fans..... Of the 50 largest cities in the US WITH a football team Minneapolis is the smallest at number 46. When you work backward from that number you can remove LA, Fresno, Sacramento and San Jose as Bay area team supporters, now you are at 42. Remove Fort Worth, Austin, El Paso, San Antonio and you are at 38, those cities will support Dallas or Houston. Mesa and Tucson Az are Cardinal fans so now we are at 36. Honolulu will NEVER have an NFL team, too far and too small a stadium. So now 35 of which 31 have teams (remember we left Vikes at 46) so we have Columbus OH, Louisville Ky, and Las Vegas NV. So which would support an NFL team(s).....going into the smaller markets would be a mistake for the NFL. They have the right number of Conferences and Divisions, an even number of playoff teams and finally the right number of games.

Leave it all alone, don't mess with success.

Sir,I have too agree with You,and I can't right now think of another City other than LA maybe Birmingham at this time,But I do believe it will be expanded in the future,Maybe including Canadian Teams and more,Who Knows,I remember the old World football League a while back and that didn't pan out either, but things have a way of coming around full circle,I guess I'm a pragmatist mainly...

EZ,
the Canadian angle is a good one, big cities, they could actually use a few of the teams they currently have. I can't see the NFL going to the 110 yrd field, 25 yrd endzones and 3 downs (not 100% sure on these rules but I do know that Canadian field won't fit in many stadiums). We have had the Canadian Baseball for a long time and it seems to work, don't know about the anthems though.....

More games? no big deal, I'm for it. Large rosters? No way. Expansion of the League ? I can't see it happening soon, tickets are already to high and do we really want the products we consume to go up ( from advertising time they buy on TV ) to compensate for more players and their already exorbitant salaries?

What's the big deal ? Teams already play 20 games a year (pre-season and regular season). make two pre-season games into two regular season games. As it stands, players get just over a thousand dollars to play each pre-season game. They'd welcome the extra cash. Let them expand the rosters a little. Do pitchers in baseball play every single game ? It favors teams with better rosters - forces you to be a better overall team. Go for it.

Okay I will try to play devils advocate here. To make it work could we:

1. Shorten and make the preseason earlier. Start the last week of August. Make it three weeks long.

2. Play 9 games, give the whole league a bye week....play the Pro-Bowl (a-la MLB) then give 2 weeks off to all teams then kick off the second 9 weeks. Play half division games before the work and half off.

3. Give all the play-off contenders a bye-week and then start the normal style playoffs.

It makes for a longer season but it also gives a little bit better break time to get injured players healthy.

Of course I hate the 18 game idea, but this is just an idea. I would also reset all the record books to show records that were set after the schedule was expanded.

1. no, let's just make August 3 weeks instead..works out the same.
2. i just have an aversion to a three week break in the middle of season...after 12 games, sure.
3. it's never a bye week if everyone gets one, it's just a break.

Fair enough and appreciate the thoughts. I don't think folks would like the Mid-season Pro-bowl and the 2 more weeks of idle in mid-season.

I say get rid of the pro-bowl, have an ESPYs type dinner to let them all pat one another on the back and call it good.

I don't know if they could give all the teams a bye week prior to the playoffs as there are 12 teams so the top two from each conference would have two weeks off, not always the best if you are relatively healthy and on a roll.
