MMA  > General MMA  > Jake Shield wants Anderson Silva
July 1, 2010, 11:16 AM
Shields, who successfully defended his title against former Pride Fighting Championships champion and UFC middleweight Henderson on April 17 in Nashville, Tenn., opted to not negotiate a renewal contract with Strikeforce prior to the bout. The fighter???s contract, which was originally drawn up by Pro Elite and purchased by Strikeforce after the short-lived fight organization went bankrupt in October 2008, also did not contain a standard "champion???s clause," which could have placed stipulations on Shields??? renegotiations while he remained a titleholder.

Prior to news of the release, Jack Shields told Sherdog.com that he submitted the fighter's asking price to the UFC on Wednesday and was awaiting an initial bid from the rival promotion to pass onto Strikeforce for review. The elder Shields said he submitted figures for a series of bouts he thought requisite if his son fought the top contenders in both the UFC???s welterweight and middleweight divisions.

Shields said his son would like to debut as a UFC middleweight, possibly against champion Anderson Silva, as welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will be tied up with "The Ultimate Fighter" reality TV series and a pending bout with rival coach Josh Koscheck later this year.

My question to all you MMA "experts" is.......Does Shields have a better chance of beating GSP or Spider?
July 1, 2010  11:21 AM ET

Spider for sure, the one fight we have really seen Silva in trouble was against Hendo. GSP will nullify Jake's wrestling just like he does to everyone else and he is a more dynamic striker. Against Silva he could work the Ground and Pound like he has always done.

If Shields does sign with UFC, I would give him a good, but very beatable opponent (maybe Bisping) then give him the Title fight.

He has a snowballs chance in hell of beating Anderson. He's got a way better shot at Georges.

but what happens if Bisping beats him? The the UFC loses any value it had for Shields. I say throw him into the lions den. Give him the Spider. He just out wrestled Hendo, and the UFC was contemplating giving Hendo another shot at Silva, so why not give Shields a shot? Who else is in ythe division for Silva to fight? Plus if Silva wins in dominate fashion it will allow Dana to crush more of what SF is.....

That would be a very boreing fight. Two wrestlers humping each other for position.....

If Bisping wins...Dana can say "our #6-7 guy beats their champion....SF is a joke"....
If Shields wins....Dana can say....."Their Champion left SF, because he wanted the best competition, and its not in SF...it's in the UFC."...

No lose situation for the UFC.

I like this line of reasoning. Give him da Spider. If he loses no harm no foul. Oh wow you lost to the P4P best in the world.

Plus it gives him an option to move down to WW. I'd like to see him go against Fitch. Keep in mind this is a most boring fight of the year candidate but it would be a good barometer for how good his "American Jiu Jitsu" really is.

Like they did with Dan Henderson when he came back to the UFC.....his first two fights were for the title in two different divisions.....LHW - loss to Rampage.....then MW - loss to the Spider.

Yeah thats true. He did have both of those titles with Dream though so they gave him a shot to unify either one of those weight divisions belts.

Those are two really tough fights to have in a new organization. Rampage then Spider.

Didn't Hendo KTFO bisping right before he lost to shields? So how does that help the UFC if Bisping wins? I say it hurts any credibility that shields would have. SF could come out and say it was fluke that shields won and that Hendo was hurt for the fight. I just think it makes more sense to put him in against Silva. That way if he loses it doesn't hurt his reputation at all.

WTF was I thinking. Hendo was never in Dream. I meant Pride.
