MMA  > General MMA  > UFC 118's James Toney plans to KO Randy Couture, defend boxing titles shortly after
July 6, 2010, 01:02 PM
Heavyweight boxing champion James Toney (72-6-3 Boxing, 0-0 MMA) wants you to know that he's taking his taking his forthcoming mixed martial arts debut against Randy Couture very seriously.

But that doesn't mean the 41 year old is turning his back on the sport that made him a star.

I'm doing both (boxing and MMA), Toney told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) at a recent media session promoting UFC 118. I'm a two-sport athlete. After I fight Couture on Aug. 28, I'm going to defend my (boxing) title against somebody in October or November.

After a well-documented courting period with the UFC, Toney will make his debut for the promotion at UFC 118 in Boston in the night's co-main event. Toney has openly admitted he welcomes the boxing versus MMA angle of the matchup, and he's happy to represent the sport in which he's been competing professionally since 1988.

This is fighting, Toney said. I can box. Ya'll say Randy Couture does 'dirty boxing,' whatever the [expletive] that means, and he's a wrestler. Hey, this is war for me ??? this guy, who ya'll claim is the greatest MMA fighter to put gloves on.

Boxers are the superior strikers. ... I look at this as a way to let everybody know that boxing reigns supreme. Says Toney

Many MMA observers, including UFC president Dana White, have predicted a short night for Toney. "Lights Out" laughs at the idea he might be easily dispatched.

Why should I be scared of an MMA fighter? Toney asked. What's different? MMA ain't no different than boxing. Boxing is much tougher because you're in there constantly punching and pounding. Right here, you've got Randy Couture who's going to be scared and constantly try to hug me like a little girl, and I'm going to make him pay for that.

Everybody knows that if you're going to stand with me, one mistake and that's your ****. Did ya'll tell Randy Couture that I'm wearing small gloves now? Did you tell him that? What do you think is going through his head right now? 'I need to stay the [expletive] away from his hands.' That's what he's thinking. Every night, he's going to bed thinking, 'What if I get hit?'

Win or lose, Toney said he plans on defending his IBA and NABO heavyweight titles shortly after, though he has yet to sign an official contract. Toney said he hopes for a fight with WBO heavyweight champion David Haye.

Hayes ran his mouth about me and said I'm crazy, I'm going to get destroyed and choked out and all that, Toney said. I don't mess with computers, but you get on computers and get online, you become a cyber gangster. That's what David Haye is. The sisters are, too ??? the Klitschkos.

Toney said he hopes to continue to bounce back and forth between boxing and MMA for the next four years and cement his place in history.

I want to do this and boxing until age 45, then I'm done, Toney said. I would have accomplished everything, and everybody would know that I'm the greatest fighter to ever put on gloves. That's my goal.

It's going to set a standard ??? the gold standard. I've got a high standard.

Las Vegas oddsmakers have already installed Toney as an underdog of Fabricio Werdum proportions. Of course, if "Vai Cavalo" could overcome Fedor Emelianenko, could Toney shock Couture?

They're trying to set me up to fail, Toney said. That's why they're throwing Randy Couture at me. I've been set up to fail my entire life, so it's nothing new to me. I'm like, 'Good. Keep talking.'

If Randy Couture takes me to the ground, I will knock him out. Ya'll ain't never seen nobody get knocked out from the floor, right? Ribs will be broken. I'm very comfortable from the floor.

And, Toney says, fans of both boxing and MMA better get used to seeing his face.

If I do something, I'm all in, Toney said. I'm not going to half do myself and do one fight ??? win or lose.

[i]I'm in this for the longrun. I'm serious. I'm not playing with people.

He's about to TRY MMA and apparently he really has NO clue (NONE whatsoeva) of what he is getting into. He says some really funny s hit and is ignorant as hell.

Here's some of my favorite quotes:

*Ya'll say Randy Couture does 'dirty boxing,' whatever the [expletive] that means, and he's a wrestler. Hey, this is war for me! this guy, who ya'll claim is the greatest MMA fighter to put gloves on. Who here has read somewhere that Randy Couture is the greatest MMA fighter to ever put gloves on?

*MMA ain't no different than boxing. Boxing is much tougher because you're in there constantly punching and pounding. Right here, you've got Randy Couture who's going to be scared and constantly try to hug me like a little girl, and I'm going to make him pay for that. Randys going to hug him! I love that quote because most all of the FAT HW boxers are winded throughout half the fight and hug or clinch every chance they get....and clinching isn't even part of boxing. Someone tell Toney that MMA and boxing ARE two entirely different sports.

*If Randy Couture takes me to the ground, I will knock him out. Ya'll ain't never seen nobody get knocked out from the floor, right? Ribs will be broken. I'm very comfortable from the floor. Is Toney saying he has great upkicks? Flat on his back he'll be more out of place then a fish out of water. Did he watch the Mercer v Sylvia fight and base his opinion of a boxer vs a Mixed Martial Artists on that?

*Hayes ran his mouth about me and said I'm crazy, I'm going to get destroyed and choked out and all that, Toney said. I don't mess with computers, but you get on computers and get online, you become a cyber gangster. That's what David Haye is. The sisters are too, the Klitschkos. Wait, now he's all about boxing again! I don't know a thing about the suposed cyber bullies....but if you've been a boxer all this time why have you not been good enough to fight either "sister"?

Randy will choke him out.

July 6, 2010  01:35 PM ET

Sounds like he is just playing up to the camera.

July 6, 2010  01:41 PM ET

He is a great interview.

July 6, 2010  01:42 PM ET

You guys are prob going to rip on him. But he will be ready to fight.

July 6, 2010  01:43 PM ET

In that video he says he "HEARD" about boxers being called out! In the above article he says he NEVER messes with the internet.

Who is King Mo Mousasi....and he claims he tapped out King Mo by rear naked choke! Toney wanted to fight Lesnar!!!? Chuck was SCARED!!!? Couture doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame!!!? David Hayes is gay!!!? He owns a Couture doll!!!? He has a freakshow in between his legs!!!? (Is he a dual sex aka hermaphrodite) PPVs are 55.99!!!? (MMA doesn't rob people as much as boxing, i.e. weak cards for way too much)

Takedown, ground 'n pound, repeat, repeat, finished.

Toney is just a sad specimen to behold...

And he looks so chunky in the video...he wanted Lesnar....Really? Is he r**arded

July 6, 2010  02:40 PM ET

He is just trying to sell a fight. I wish some other fighters would do that.

July 6, 2010  03:10 PM ET

Prepare to crucify me, but I agree with James on a few points.

Sorry, but Randy doesn't belong in th HOF. Not only does he have tons of losses but he also has lost to some less than stellar fighters.

Ricco Rodriguez: Come on, really?
Enson: Great 205 guy, but beat Randy when he was a big HW.
Mikhail Illutkine: Unless you lost by chin in the eye to this guy, you don't have a spot in any MMA HOF.

July 6, 2010  03:22 PM ET

Randy better get James down and do it quickly.

Pressing him against the fence and working uppercuts is the wrong strategy with this guy, he lives off of close in exchanges and short hooks and uppercuts.

He also has absolutely terrific head movement for a boxer, which is huge in MMA. Randy has nothing to offer him standing, and I hope for the sake of MMA he realizes that quickly.

QUOTE(#17):

Does either guy stand to gain much (other than $$$) from this fight?

If randy wins Dana will probably give him a title shot..... After his big wins over Vera, Coleman, and Toney........ Why people continue to pay for his fights as main events are beyond me....

QUOTE(#16):

No real shame in the Ricco loss... He had only lost one fight prior to that match up. He had wins over Arlovski, Buentello, Monson and Pete Williams (top 10 at the time; not that that's saying a lot). He has since defeated George Bush :).Was Randy ever a big HW?

Yeah, Randy was about 240 about the time he fought in Rings.
