NBA  > General NBA  > in defense of LeBron
July 11, 2010, 12:29 AM
...there is no defense. In one week LeBron managed to ruin his reputation, without pulling a ben or tiger. No, instead mr. im tha king showed his true self, and its pathetic. I'll admitt, i am more then disapointed as a Knicks fan he didnt come to New York but it was clear for a while he wouldnt be, and i was really rooting for lebron to remain in Cleveland. But having ESPN do an hour long show about you? Not awnsering the texts or calls from the Cavs owner? Couldnt he at least have said befor the LeBron Special that he wouldnt be coming back to Cleveland? But what really got me laughing was LeBron said he wont have the "pressure" of scoring 30 or shooting good everynight. We know now what seperates LeBron from the greats, drive. MJ, Kobe, Magic, Isiah...they all had it. LeBron doesnt.

Obviously the whole circus and ESPN show was nauseating. Also, I think it would've been better for the game, and for Lebron's legacy if he chose chicago. However, leaving cleveland was a no-brainer. I cannot see how anyone could ask him to stay. Cleveland had already played all their cards. That team was not getting any better while the rest of the league (laker, magic, oklahoma, Miami, celtics, chicago) were either already scary and getting better. He made the best choice by leaving cleveland and fairly good choice by joining miami. As a heat fan, I'll take it.

July 11, 2010  03:48 AM ET

MJ,Shaq,Magic,Isiah,Bird all had another hof/superstar with them. I don't fault LeBron for leaving, he is 25 and could of handled it better than what he did. Of course the media has put him in the spotlight for almost 10 years now so what do you expect. I wish LeBron the best.

July 11, 2010  06:48 AM ET

The Heat won't be able to stand up to the heat in the kitchen. Every NBA team is going to go after them with their best performances and they just don't have the intestinal fortitude to be the best night after night every night. I expect alot of unhappy players in Miami this and in future seasons. Go BULLS!!!

July 11, 2010  09:53 AM ET

The Lakers nor the Celtics would have won a championship in the last 3 years if their former players which where GMs didnt just hand them allstars in Trades. Should Kobe had said no to Gasol... Im a true alpha dog i can do it by myself...

In 20- years no one will care how James got his rings...only that he won x number of them.

Is Bill Russell remembered for having 2-3-4-5 other HOF players on his teams?...no...he is remembered for winning all those rings.

You can defend Lebron's actions to a very small extent
Lebronidict Arnold, is he really a traitor?

no. but people will remember that he took the "easy way out" and how he treated his former team. And be honest, if the Heat dont win more then 2 or 3 they will be a huge disapointment.

MJ never had any support the first 6 or 7 years, he didnt leave, Kobe had no one after Shaq left, im trying to say he could have showed some loyalty and faith in his former team not bailed on them

I'm not mad at him for leaving, I'm mad at him for not giving the Cav's a heads up so they could sign some decent players. They didn't know until the rest of the world knew. That was low.

July 12, 2010  06:23 AM ET

Me thinks Garnett swayed Lebron into leaving. Loyalty does not win rings. He has only got a short window of opportunity. 7 years wasted with only individual accolades. Miami will not bring as many MVPs but it sure will bring rings. Respect the man for having courage to do what it takes to win....in the playoffs!

Chicago could have easily competed for a title. Rose, James, Deng, Boozer, Noah would be the best starting five in the league. With Taj Gibson and two shooters the only team you could honestly say is better would be the defending champion Lakers.

First the media hypes up this free agency for two years, gives him a 1-hour special, then torches him...Who is to blame? Lebron doesn't owe cleveland or gilbert anything after 7 years of entertainment...Now his decision to leave is justified...Although I would have liked him to go to chicago with an established roster and a solid coach in place...If the Heat can stay healthy, they are going to win a lot of championships despite being short on role players and defense...

LBJ didn't ruin anything, had he pick NY you would be happy crush518. I wanted LBJ to come to Chicago, so what, LBJ has to do what he thinks best for him and his family. I cant understand why soo many ppl like you are being cry babies. No one made you watch his 1hr show. This shows the Cav's owner true colors when he made comments about LBJ that were uncalled for. If LBJ stay in Cleveland the owner would've been singing another tune. Why would you want to resign a player for 125 millions if he doesn't play hard? LBJ score like 30 points in the 4th quarter to beat the pistons and took Cleveland to it 1st ever NBA final. The owner is full of it and so are you. LBJ gave him 7 years, LBJ doesn't owe Cleveland anything. MJ didn't do it by himself, he had Scottie,Horace, BJ Armstrong, and Bill played great defense against Ewing and other centers. Against Portland it was the bulls bench that got them back in the game lead by Craig, Stacey & Cliff. Then Jordan had Toni, Ron and Dennis. Even when Jordan retired the Bulls could've went to the eastern conference final if Hue didn't make that weak call against Scottie and I'm sure the bulls could beat the Pacers. Kobe has Pau, Ron-ron,Lamar & Fisher. Isiah had Joe, Bill, Vinnie,Mark,Edward and Dennis. I don't need to name all the great players Magic had around him do I ? Now that LBJ has D-wade and CB lets see what he can do.

July 12, 2010  11:01 AM ET

Tired of the comments that LBJ didn't have talent around him. He's had all-stars and near all-star talent in guys like Mo Williams, Jamison, Ilgauskas, Boozer. He's had solid role players like Shaq, Varejao, Ben Wallace, Delonte West, Anthony Parker, Donyell Marshall, JJ Hickson... The Cavs over the past few years have had PLENTY of talent--definitely among the top in the league. Yet LBJ doesn't have the same drive as DWade and Kobe--and anyone can see this watching the mentality of these players in playoff games.

So good job Lebron. You have tarnished your legacy by doing something MJ, Magic, Bird, Duncan, and Kobe never did and giving up on your team. You'll never be the man on a championship team. You may win a couple more rings in Miami as opposed to Cleveland, but even Reggie Miller admits they won't mean nearly as much. Hope you enjoy playing the sidekick role to Wade down there.

July 12, 2010  01:32 PM ET

Although its very satisfying to slam LBJ right now, especially after how everything went down, we have to remember that the media, as well as the fans, have been fueling this egomaniac ever since he was in high school. We were the ones to label him the heir apparent to Jordan's legacy, but let's ask ourselves: why does there have to be another? Perhaps, we were spoiled during those Jordan years, and we didn't want to imagine want to imagine an NBA without him? If you can remember, all the heirs to the Legacy, it became so ridiculous that at one point we called Harold Minor (remember him?) "Baby Jordan". Before LeBron even laced his sneaks for an NBA game, he was annointed the person to carry the torch, but who ever said it had to be Jordan's? Why couldn't he be his own man?

I will say that I, like 80% of the NBA fanbase right now (my guestimate), am appalled by the way LeBron handled himself going as far back as this year's early playoff exit. After all, Jordan would have never gone out like that (i.r. without a fight), and Jordan eventually stuck around to grind out his six championships with the Bulls (there I go comparing again) We might have created the monster that is LeBron, BUT we never took away his freedom to create his own legacy.

July 12, 2010  02:37 PM ET

LeBron leaving will not be a big deal in a few seasons...

Just look at Kobe...he cheated on his wife, ran his coach out of town and Shaq as well, then he couldn't win squat and had to suck it up and get Phil back along with some talent...now, he has 5 rings and no one cares.

Time will heal all wounds.

LeBron can care less what his legacy would have been in Chicago or NY...it was Miami all along.

In Miami, with Wade and Bosh, he will have a chance to win MANY titles....period.

July 12, 2010  02:43 PM ET

all of you who keep saying jordan would never had done this......HE NEVER HAD THE CHANCE....we soon forget that before jordans rookie contract was up he resigned (like durant just did) before his contract was up it was an eight year deal with no outs....half way through that contract they started there run and in all of this do we forget he had the best coach the NBA has ever seen. As for the others (magic, bird, duncan) they all went to superstar teams when they were drafted no need to move when your winning titles at the start of your career. As for the Kobe remark please did we already forget his off season 3 years ago oh yeah we did why BECAUSE HE STARTED TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS!

The Heat is still Wade's team. At the end of the season LBJ may be voted best player in a supporting role.
