NFL  > General NFL  > A realistic outlook on the 49ers......
July 24, 2010, 10:29 AM
Over the last few seasons, I have gradually lost the passion I once had for the game of football. I have watched every game I possibly could, and toughed them out. So don't go calling me a fairweather fan...........

Anyways, at the beginning of last year, I had high hopes for the Niners and kind of built myself up for the disappointment that followed. Though I still think they had the team that could make better showings than they did at times, they lacked the winning mentality and the experience it takes to win against the upper half of the league. 5 of their 8 wins came inside their division with the other 3 wins coming against Jax, Chi (ugly game) and Det. So needless to say, though it was a .500 record, it wasnt as impressive as us Niner fans want to make ourselves believe.

All that said, this is a new year and with all new years comes all new expectations. I honestly believe that the Niners are poised to take the divison crown and make a playoff appearence for the first time since 2002, ughhggg that hurt to type... I am going to stop short on building them up like I did last year, so I have no prediction how they will play against the other conference teams or the AFC West. I think there are a lot of great matchups for them this year that will help them should they win the West and make the playoffs... N.O. on Monday night week 2, they play Philly, Atlanta, GB, and SD.. I think all of those games will be great non division matchups that will give them the experience they will need when January comes around.

In the middle of those matchups there are many games that can and will go either way. I will be prepared for whatever happens this time around however.

Players to watch for on offense will be a lot of the same names as last year. Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree, Joshua Morgan and Glenn Coffee. The addition of Ginn JR should help the special teams greatly and maybe even an extra target for Alex Smith.

Offense has everything to do with QB play. I believe Smith will have a breakout year with a reinforced OL.

If the defense keeps improving, I think this will be a great year to be a Niner fan! But we'll see..

I think a 10-6 record with a possible playoff victory would be a realistic expectation for this team. Anything less would be a failure and anything more would be overachieving......

Feel free to laugh, agree, or just share your thoughts.

Jack,When Frisco Played Cincy in 88,I knew they had a curse on them as our star nose tackle, broke his leg in the 1 set of downs, everyone could see it,broke right into, watching the replay, now that's bad luck right there...so the Bengals have been in the shade for the last 22 years, with a play-off here and there[mostly there]And when they're playing poorly?,They really zuck.It pains Me too see alot of them on all those blooper reels they always show,"How not to humiliate yerselves,Ok?"So,I'm pretty thick-skined about them after all these Years,Ifn they Win? Great!!,when they lose?Oh well, been there done that.and hope thier next season is better...There's other teams I root for too[Even the Steelers and Ravens & Browns sometime, just because they're in the AFC North,I took on the Bears last year as They reminded Me last Season of how close You may get?,It's just out of reach, case in point back too back losses too the Jets after sweeping the Div,Now that was another big disapointment, but hey,it's a new season!! and i gotta dream!!!!

The Tim Krumrie incident. I remember it well. They must have replayed it a dozen times. It was very disturbing.

J.C. I think the Niners can be contenders, they have the weapons needed with Gore, Davis and Crabtree. Certainly nothing wrong with the D, Patrick Willis is a beast a MLB plus anotheryear of maturity under Singletarys coaching. I feel a connection with the Niners due to Singletary and his old days as a player for the Bears, I loved to watch him play and see a lot of his mentality in the players. Good luck in the upcoming season especially week 13 ;-)

I am with you Duke where every year it is supposed to be the year that we make the dramatic jump and I promised my self that I would not do it this year. Of course I am not doing well with this and I think we can not only be a legit playoff team, but if the D keeps it up, we might make a little run in the playpffs as well.

Duke,
I think your guys underachieved last year, I still have confidence in Singletary as a coach and motivator. The Cards cannot be as strong this year as last--no way. You guys have a very good chance to take the division. I don't have confidence in Smith (gut feeling) but I never get to see the guy play so what the **** do I know. Having Crabtree for the preseason and camp will make a difference. Good luck.

i think the Niners win the west, by default, but they win it nonetheless. They are the best team in the west, and could upset a team or two in the playoffs,(like the Cards of '08).

I agree that the Niners should win the West, but that isn't exactly setting the bar that high. Any wins they get in the playoffs would take an upset. They are a solid second-tier team, but aren't in the elite ranks at this time.

True, but keep in mind they'll probably host a playoff game, thats why i said they might win one or two.

No such thing as winning by default where I come from. Everything is earned!!

If the Cards still had Warner, they would win the Division hands down. I say the niners win the division with an 8-8 record.

This may be Smiths last year to prove himself. We will know what kind of QB we have by week 2 of preseason. The 49ers were 2-6 on the road in 2009, beating Arizona week one and St. Louis on the road. The 49ers lost to Seattle on the road which may have cost them a playoff spot last year. This year the 49ers start the season on the road in Seattle (will this game determine if SF makes the playoffs?). They also play 3 of their first 4 games on the road with their only home game being against New Orleans. If they go 0-4 (having lost to K.C. on the road would be an upset) their final 4 games (Eagles, Raiders, Panthers, Broncos) before the bye week. SF may be looking at 2-6 record at the bye and their season probably over. I contend that SF needs to beat Seattle to start their season and with this momentum it could even give them a 3-1 record to start the first quarter of the season and make the league believe that SF is a contender.
