NFL  > General NFL  > Are the Steelers as screwed as everyone thinks?

I think Brian Leftwich can keep them afloat. Why are the written off already?

Dennis Dixon could be a great QB, as much as I like Byron he has had his chances and the dreaded 'upper ankle sprain' always pops up.

I like the Steelers chances, the key should be the running game, if/when Dennis takes over during the Bens absence he could prove to be a double threat, like Vick.

Going out on a limb here, but if Dennis proves worthy of the job, does he keep it with a healthly Ben on the sideline?

JMO! I don't think so. The Steelers have always had capable backups for when one of their starters went down. (with the execption of Troy, but then there isn't anyone who could replace Troy). People often forget that the second string players would be starters if they played for any of the other 31 teams. I see the Steelers starting out slow, gain momentum then finish out strong going deep into the playoff's. Win or lose I'll still be a diehard fan!!!

The problem with Colon is that the O-line is bad to start with and that makes it worse. I think Randle El will fill Holmes' absence. You are right about an aging D though, that will be a problem.

Because they can, That will be the great thing Rocker , I dont think they will start out slow, I think they will be fine, The Steelers are known to plug in weaknesses and I agree the line was one of our weaknesses last year but we have a new line coach and we have capable bodies to fill that void,, I mean we won the Super bowl with Willie and our line was just as bad. But they had time to prepare for this loss and we signed a big guard also, This would be an issue if it was during season but it wasnt so they have time to get it worked out...

They addressed issues on the defense this offseason, I know they are getting old, but I still say they will be a top 3 defense this season. No there was no replacement for Troy, but no one is like Troy,. Getting McFadden and Foote Back helped. I look for McFadden to start and him and Taylor together are much better than Taylor and Gay. And Taylor is also on the last year of his contract. So he will be playing to either get resigned with the Steelers or get an opportunity elsewhere.

But I think Leftwich will start and if he starts to struggle I think Dixon will get his chance, On the Wide recievers, I really dont think we will Miss Holmes, Mike Wallace did just fine last year and I look for him to be better this season , he is working with good ones and Randle El already knows the system. And Heath and Hines we are Ok there....

ON Woodley < he may be unhappy right now but he still will get signed,. But there isnt much that can be done until they get a new CBA I am just glad he is not pulling tactics like some of the others out there. But we can always franchise him at the end of the season. I dont see Ben being rusty when he gets back he has the most to prove , not only to his teammates but tot the fans as well,,, and he will be the starter even if they go 4-0 that has done been said. Ben is thier QB.

I think at worst we will be 2-2 and best 3-1 , I look at the schedule and we can do it with what we got, The only game that really concerns me is the Ravens game but we always come out and play against them , But they may be with out Ed Reed so IMO that will even the odds , he is thier Troy and thier corners got exposed as well without Reed.

So I think we will be fine and be right in the hunt come January. This fan is not worried. Kind of optmistic...Looking forward to it actually,.

They are the Steelers and should never be underestimated or counted out.

Everything you said, I agree. I just can't believe all the sports writers think they are so screwed, because they aren't. They've done more with less before.

The offensive line was not bad. It was actually improving. Colon's injury is a big loss, but at least his position figures to be the easiest to replace. Everybody is talking about the age of the Steelers defense, but I don't get that. Foote coming back helps. It figures that he will spell Farrior with Timmons playing in Foote's old spot. Harrison is a young 32. He hasn't got nearly the mileage on him that most players his age do. Aaron smith is 35, but he showed no signs of slowing down and now his shoulder is good for the first time in years. Taylor, Polamalu and Clark should be in their primes. Barring injury, this defense should be superb.

Hey Jack, Well them signing Flozell will help , been reading the reports from training camp and they said the new Oline Coach is very verbal and animated and right up in thier faces ... That is what them boys needed they needed a coach not a buddy....And I agree on what you said on the defense and they said Troy and Aaron both looked good....And they said Harrison was like a house on fire hitting anything that moved,.....They said the team as a whole looked good, But the one report that I seen and this has me wondering now about our starter till Ben gets back, they said Leftwich struggled and Dixon was looking real good...They said his passing all of his mechanics looked better than from last year...What I read the only concern anyone has now is the running back depth,,,,They said Redman looked good and but someone said Dwyer was hurt or something and wasnt he the one that we got on the cheap like Wallace not sure....

But More good news Ravens lost thier Main Corner for the season...And Reed down I am liking our chances better come time to play them.....

But All in all everything I read was postive even the fans cheered Ben when he took the field and that is a good sign....They said they looked really good and focused...So we may suprise alot of people this year...Looking forward to the 14th to actually see then I will know more...LOL But it is almost here...And I am ready....Bout ready to start my weekly thread now..

Ben was looking good too. I'm glad he got a warm reception and hoping the team can move on now. I'm hoping they give Dixon a shot!
