NFL  > General NFL  > Does Titans lawsuit against Kiffin and USC make any sense?

Serious question here. Ignore your feelings about Kiffin for a moment and ask yourself: does this suit have any merit? The NCAA and NFL are two separate organizations with different rules, including those concerning hiring practices for coaches. Neither group is bound by the rules of the other. For instance, Unga lost his college eligibility this year for violating the rules of his university (no matter how ridiculous or inappropriate they might be). He went into the supplemental draft, however, and is now eligible to play in the NFL. He and the Bears are completely unaffected by either the rules of the university or the NCAA is this case. Besides, this is nothing compared to the Petrino ordeal. Petrino was under contract as the Falcons Head Coach, and was still hired away by the Arkansas Razorbacks during the actual season. You know Arkansas didn't clear this with the Falcons first since Petrino lied to the Falcons about not wanting the Arkansas job and then sneaking out of town and leaving the football equivalent of a dear john letter in all of the players' lockers. I never heard about a big lawsuit in that case. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like Pola is the only one that violated his contract. While I don't like Kiffin or USC, it seems ridiculous to sue them for inducing Pola to breach his contract, especially when they weren't bound by the rules or procedures of the NFL. If Kiffin were the HC of an NFL team and did this it would be a completely different issue. As it stands, this seems more like a MLB team suing an NFL team because one of their draft picks chose to sign with the NFL team that drafted him instead. Quite simply, we're talking about two separate groups who aren't bound by the rules and procedures enacted by the other.
