NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Texas-Notre Dame to play 4
August 6, 2010, 10:38 AM
Nice to see that at least two schools (Irish Longhorn) are bucking the trend of dropping mighty matchups at the start of the season and replacing them with warm-up games against local I-AA schools.

Texas-ND will play a four-game series starting in 2015.

Those of us watching TV from the peanut gallery will have something to look forward to--instead of a bunch of piddly matchups of perennial powerhouses against chump-change state colleges.

That's nice. OU is playing ND in 2012 and 2013.

ESPN is trying to arrange a Labor Day Weekend 2012 game between TTech and Alabama at Cowboy's Stadium. TTech is all for it but Alabama has not yet committed.

Alabama is currently scheduled to play Western Kentucky (HA!) that weekend.

Fascinating. There are five seasons, hopefully including 3-4 Big XII championships and a couple of NCs for the 'Horns, before we get to 2015.

Welcome...have a hard day? :)

Yeah, we need to include at least one NC loss by Big Lame Bob :)

I was commenting on the fact that JRM hadn't been on all day....but if pointing out that OU has lost more NC's than TU has won....ok...

Yes, I think most cfb fans are done buying the theory that, "We don't need to play good teams out-of-conference, because our in-conference schedule is so tough".

It makes sense. College football is all about money and this possibly the biggest money match-up you can get.

At the end of 2009, Forbes listed Texas #1 and Notre Dame #2 on their list of most valuable college football teams.

I think most cfb fans never bought into that ruse in the first place. Playing weakling I-AA teams is nothing but a Colonel Saunders strategy (The Chicken Way Out).

The unbiased, semi-intelligent fans that have been watching the game for a while know how it really is.

I've heard a few coaches say this though.
On TV of course (which goes out to millions).

And if it's said on TV - it must be true!

Here's the sad truth. I'm Team ABC, a perennial contender with a rabid fan base. I can sell out my 100,000 seat stadium against anyone - a D-III team if need be. On a home game I make $2,500,000. I can do a home and home with another contender, and make $2,500,000 for the two seasons. Or I can schedule two minor teams, both of whom will come to my stadium for $700,000 (which is two or three times what they could make from a home game in their dinky little stadiums). Now I've made $3,600,000 for the two seasons.Either the BCS has to have a quantifiable SOS component to its rankings, or the NCAA has to limit the number of home games a team can have, or you're gonna continue to see 'Bama-San Jose State and Texas-Florida Atlantic OOC matchups.

That is why only a few schools have athletic programs that make money.

I know JRM... I know.
:(

And those games aren't even so bad. Hell, if I'm a San Jose St/FAU fan those games are great.

What gets me is the Weber States/Citadels/Youngstown States/Woffords etc... If FBS teams are gonna schedule that kinda garbage, it should be listed as a 'bye' at the end of the season.

They shouldn't be able to call that a win a 'W', the games shouldn't count in the computers/polls, and the teams/players should not accrue any 'stats' for those games.

Hell, I could throw for 300 yards and rush for 200 vs those teams.
Whoop dee doo!

And Crazy, I think you might like to know that the South Dakota State Jackrabbits play at Nebraska Sept. 25.

That's doubly pathetic. From South Dakota, and they are Jackrabbits.

Not to pick on Nebraska necessarily, as all the top-25 teams are doing this.

It could get to the point where no one is playing real opponents outside of conference. And, at that point, how are we to tell which conferences, or which teams, are really better than the others?

I agree with the points above. Wins against A-11 schools and weaker conferences should not count in the BCS talley.

An even better proposal: Count them as ties...OR LOSSES!

August 25, 2010  12:02 PM ET

So Texas will be playing a I-AA school from the mid-west and not the South West is this big news?

August 31, 2010  11:40 PM ET

I see Texas and USC have scheduled games in 2017-2018.

That means Texas-USC-Notre Dame will be playing round robins.

Great news! At least these teams are willing to offer us some excitement instead of scurrying behind 1-AA skirts.
