Cycling  > General Cycling  > The investigation of drug use/PEDs by US authorities into Cycliing
August 11, 2010, 09:31 PM
What is the goal of the investigation by US authorities into suspected or alleged PEDs within US cycling? Is it to build a better cycling association? Is it to determine who is lying or telling the truth? Is it to create a job or receive a salary for the length of investigation or maybe to create the viability of a governmental or non-governmental agency to exist. I am really unsure of the value or intent of investigating Lance, Greg, at others. Even Landis' claims may not warrant an investigation. Are there lots of claims that do not get investigated?

If there was something already illegal, would not there be charges levied against those who have done illegal acts? What happens if the grand jury believes something was illegal or some person gave other people the knowledge to hide PED usage but there is no perjury? Does that mean the ala Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky that there are no charges warranted?

I am trying to understand the process of this, the possible outcomes of this investigation by Novitsky, etc. What is now the status of Barry Bonds? We know that Pete Rose bet on baseball and did lie and was found guilty and served in a Federal Penitentiary. Anyone have thoughts? I would really like to not bring in personal opinions but facts on grand jury process and the intricacies of the road ahead. Please refrain from bias that is often associated with the BCS argument and which conference in College Football is the best.

I don't see the point in investigating guys who've already retired. Besides the sports' governing bodies are capable of doing the investigations themselves!

I fully agree with you on this issue mickster. Being a rider myself, I can truly say that the talks of doping in the pro peloton are nothing but rumor and speculation. Very few riders (less than 10 percent I'd say) ever have or ever will use PED's. Most riders are clean, trustworthy guys who love what they do. Unfortunatly, a small number have decided to dope in a failed effort to perform better. I can also say that those who dope do not perform better, at least not in cycling. Dopers suffer just as much as other riders during a race; therefore the doping isn't worth it. As far as Lance is concerned, he is a clean rider who rode during a bad era in cycling and those whom he rode with are trying to pull him down to make up for their mistakes. And journalists who say he doped? Please, you have NO idea what its like to race so stay out of cycling unless you are publishing positive stories. I'd rather have no coverage of cycling than Hollywood stories about how the best cyclist of our generation is a supposed cheat.
