Yes.
In all honesty, I liked the days of yore, when all the big games were on New Years Day. It was like a football orgy.
All the fallout from the game results and resulting poll voting, while sometimes frustrating in terms of defying logic, was ALWAYS good for "energetic discussions".

The need to BE #1 is part of the German psyche.
So that's why they bombed Pearl Harbor...?
Good Lord arewe to that point asa society were striving to be the best is looked at as a hassel. There's only one way to continually improve, that is to promote the best out of people/atheletes through fair and through competion. If you aren't interested in a NC race than watch the intermural squad tee off on each other. I love and thrive on the idea of competition and I think to do away with the idea of being the best is not only detrimental to the sport but in larger aspect to the society as a whole. Good Lord man this is America, not some freakin socialist, bankrupt 2nd best has been from Europe!! (I will now gladly hop of my soap box, sorry for carrying on.)

I don't think we need to crown a national champion.
I don't agree that we have "too many polls, too many computers, too many opinions"....that is one of the things that makes college football fun. Everyone can agree or disagree about where there team should be placed...but we don't need to come up with a format to crown a national champion....BCS or playoff.
Yes. The SEC will never drop the SEC championship game. ;)

Nah we don't neeeeeeeeeeeeed it. CFB is an entertainment product for the fans and a dream-come-true for the student athlete. Nobody needs the game.
But I WANT it.

It's a running joke, started by PSU I believe.

The American psyche wasn't responsible for establishing the modern Olympics, World Cup, and world championships in rugby and cricket. It's human nature to want to find out who's best through competition.
Not tracking winners, losers, the best, the worst, is okay for startup T-ball, but to leave things undecided - or worse yet largely decided by opinion polls - at the CFB level will always be controversial. That's why the polls, as our only option to actual competition, remain so important to CFB.

Oh no. It's John Belushi in Animal House. Waaaay before PSU stole it.
I think it all started when 2 cavemen decided to run around a tree and see who was faster. Either that or maybe it was the Germans.

The same ones that dropped the A-bomb on Tokyo?

This is probably true. We've had rankings since Dr. Dickinson of the University of Illinois applied his mathematical formula to college football in 1926. Of course, Knute Rockne invited him to lunch to persuade him to back-date his system so that he could name the "Four Horsemen" team #1 from 1924. Rankings are here to stay - that ship has sailed decades ago.
If anyone thinks we don't need a National Champion, by all means join the Armpit Society, declare that no team has ever been National Champion, and start throwing asterisks - no skin off my back. I note that the most anti-SEC poster of Fan Nation joined the Armpit Society after the fourth straight SEC team won the BCS title. Coincidence? You be the judge.
