UFC 118 is a huge event for both sports boxing and MMA. James Toney is putting his money where his mouth is and going to try to prove a point sat night. Boxers like Bernard Hopkins and Mayweather have stated they could come into the MMA world and easily dominate and that MMA isn't a legit fighting sport.

My thoughts about the topic is that Dana White made the right choice by making this fight happen and signing James Toney to fight Captain America. Reason being, there are going to be more boxing fans watching this fight to see if the rumors are true about boxers fighting MMA style.

Say Randy loses the fight then you will see more boxers coming over to MMA and open up a bigger fan base and competition since MMA is becoming the fastest growing sport in the world and more people are plugging in every event, boxing fan base really consist of the older generation while MMA is grabbing the new age. I think a lot of boxers won't try MMA due to the thought of the constant ground game and kicks advantage besides just standing and punching.

If Randy wins the fight then obviously he will shut a lot of critics up and give MMA more credit to those that think MMA isn't a legit fighting sport.

Personally I think that this fight does very little to settle the score between MMA and Boxing. If Couture wins he didn't just beat a boxer, he beat a fat, over the hill, and slow boxer. If Toney wins most likely it will be dubbed a lucky punch or whatever. Until an in their prime boxer converts and actually trains for more than 6 months it won't prove anything. The only way this thing will give an edge to either sport is if Couture wins it by KO on the feet or if Toney drops Couture and then submits him or something. It will be very interesting to see what happens but I don't think it legitimizes either sport more than the other.

I agree with both Veteran and Jim.
No matter what happens, this is just one boxing guy fighting one MMA fighter. Both are over the hill fighters and both sides will give this as an excuse for the side that lost.

if Toney KO's Randy, MMA will say "well duh! Everyone has a puncher's chance" And if Randy takes toney down and GnP or submit him, boxers will say "Randy run away from standing against Toney (which is obvious) and took him out of his comfort zone".

The doubters will always be doubters and this will not be an example that will make them see it through.

But I do agree with Uno's point about this being a no brainer for Dana. I mean, Toney is a big mouth, and he's making people interested in the fight, and I think even if he gets a small pctg of the boxing fans to watch, theres a chance they can appreciate the sport, and who knows actually like it.Me personally, Ive always been a boxing fan, but when I started watching MMA it was just so much better. Its was all aspects of fighting.

I bet you didn't think I would contribute lol, I may not teach MMA like either you or Roni stated but I sure enjoy the MMA (UFC) but I use to be a big boxing fan and very disappointed with the approach through out the years and boxers not wanting to fighter boxers for stupid reasons.

And also, when there is a boxing PPV, can the undercard have some fighters I know?

This is the point where I lose interest in boxing. The undercards are decent at best and they don't promote them at all. The UFC has at least 2 fights on all the posters or whatever if not 3 and they do a good job of promoting the undercard via Spike or extra viewing during the PPV. This appeases the MMA community so when a Silva-Leites fight happens we still see a good overall card instea.d of being like boxing who puts all their eggs in one basket

are you crazy? :)
We are GLAD you came!
Seriously, Uno. The more the merrier. And as you can see anyone can contribute.
This is what makes this board fun. We like to talk about MMA, and we have a great group here; but by all means it is not a closed group.
New blood is not only wellcomed, but it is also a thing we strive to get in here.

well, I agree in parts.
I mean, names and Hype doesn't mean much.
Most of the times are the unknown guys who gives the better show; you know what I mean?
Take for instance the Silva & maia and BJ Penn event in Abu Dabi. Was supposed to be a great event and at the end it wasn't that great (even though it had great names).
Then take the WEC PPV and the Leonard Garcia and Chan Sung Jung (Korean Zombi) fight was the best fight of the year so far...

But I do agree that Boxing is about the main fight only and the rest is just fillers.

I don't know. I loved Boxing at the times where it had great fighters and they actually fought each other.
look now. When one good guy fights another good one it's always the best of the year! And to me this says that it is just too far between good fights. it is obviously a big fight, but you can't have a sport survive on 1-2 great fights per year...
