MMA  > General MMA  > Can Edgar vs Maynard headline a PPV?
September 1, 2010, 03:31 PM
From the SportsNickel Roundtable!

Shane: I???m sure they will try, but I say no. Maynard has a very boring style. In lots of people opinion he lost to Diaz proving he can???t hump a well rounded guy on the ground. I was a little surprised at the KenFlo and Maynard fight. I hope Edgar vs Maynard is a co-main on a card where the LHW, MW, or WW title is on the line.

Joseph: By pure definition, it can. How well will it do? Probably not that great. Despite wins over Penn, Guida, and Tyson Griffin, Edgar is still kind of an unknown. Maynard, though undefeated in official competition, hasn???t exactly set the world on fire, either. Ideally, some famous names should fight on the undercard, and if Edgar and Maynard wow the audience on their own, maybe they can reach headline status.

Collin: Not if they want huge numbers. It can be the top fihgt, but only if they also have a huge co-feature like Penn Gomi or the like.

Joao: Hardcore fans appreciate the fight. But to sell an event in numbers you need more than that.
And the casual fans don???t really care about this fight. Perhaps even many hardcore fans feel sleepy when thinking about it. The single appeal is that Frankie Edgar is that kind of undersized, underdog champion. He was the underdog against BJ Penn and now he???s arguably the underdog again against Maynard, as ???The Bully??? beat him in their first encounter. And he beat him kind of easily, by outwrestling the current champion.
For this fight to headline a PPV, and for it to be successful, you need to have a strong co-main event on that card. By itself it doesn???t sell.

Throw it on the same card as Silva vs Sonnon 2.

I forgot to add something to my answer.

It "can", but it "shouldn't".

Bear in mind that the UFC has had PPVs headlined by fights such as Rich Franklin vs Yushin Okami (non title). Edgar vs Maynard isn't worse.

But, of course, like I said, it's not a fight to build a PPV around, unless you have a strong card beneath it.

Frankie vs Gray should be a co-main. Save some big guys for the main event. Like said before, Silva-Sonnen 2 would be a good card. They're both relatively unknown so they need to advertise with somebody popular and a little bit of Frankie to help get his name out.

Frankie just headlined against BJ Penn TWICE and won 8 of 10 rounds. Grey was on TUF and was a feature vs Kenny! How are they unknown??

TO the Q.

I don;t think they can SELL a PPV- neither are known for finishes- I think you need to double this with a proven standup war - no Rashad fights and no GSP and NO RANDY fights.

I hate having double title defenses.

So- up to me?

Marry it to a Tito/Chuck 3 or if you can't wait that long- The Next Forrest fight or even Leben/Wandy.
