"The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission released Thursday the salary figures for last Saturday's UFC 118 event at the TD Garden. The biggest surprise is, without a doubt, James Toney earning more than any other fighter on the card. "Lights Out" walked away with a cool $500,000 for his 199-second MMA debut.

His opponent, Randy Couture, earned $250,000 for his win, while lightweight champion Frankie Edgar walked away with his belt and $96,000.

Of course, the salaries reported to the commission do not necessarily represent a fighter's final earnings once sponsorships and extra bonuses are factored in.

The purses (show/win bonus) are below.

Frankie Edgar: $96,000 ($48,000 win bonus) def. B.J. Penn: $150,000

Randy Couture: $250,000 (no win bonus) def. James Toney: $500,000

Demian Maia: $68,000 ($34,000 win bonus) def. Mario Miranda: $8,000

Gray Maynard: $46,000 ($23,000 win bonus) def. Kenny Florian: $65,000

Nate Diaz: $60,000 ($30,000 win bonus) def. Marcus Davis: $31,000

Joe Lauzon: $24,000 ($12,000 win bonus) def. Gabe Ruediger: $8,000

Nik Lentz: $22,000 ($11,000 win bonus) def. Andre Winner: $10,000

Dan Miller: $30,000 ($15,000 win bonus) def. John Salter: $8,000

Greg Soto: $12,000 ($6,000 win bonus) def. Nick Osipczak: $10,000

Mike Pierce: $24,000 ($12,000 win bonus) def. Amilcar Alves: $6,000

I think you guys are oversimplifying things.
We all know that if Randy was another fighter who would want to stand & bang with Toney, he could have KO'd him.
The fact that Randy didn't take any chances and dived for the takedown is what made it seems like Toney didn't try.
But what did we expect? I mean isn't this exactly what we knew it would happen if Randy got to him? Yes, most MMA fighters would be able to free themselves, but some won't And Toney is not an MMA fighter.
So all in all, the outcome was expected, and I think it is unfair to say he stole or he didn't try.
After all, he did exactly what was expected of him.

Hey Shark fights is next week.

I say Toney is very smart. Its a shame that the UFC will pay 500 Grand to a side show and yet won't pay their own fighters anything.

I just don't see how anyone can come on here and defend Dana ever again.......

It is a travesty that he is willing to pay some guy who has never fought an MMA fight 500G's, and yet has champions getting payed very little. And make no mistake about it when a guy gets paid 40K for a fight he only sees a little of that. Most camps charge a pretty penny to train.

heh. I have said it all along. IMO the curse of MMA is that UFC dominates the market, and thus duictate how much people should get paid.
it is also how other companies can compete, but at the end of the day, until the fighters have more power, a base salary above the "per fight" pay, MMA will keep suffering these things...

but in what pertains Toney, I disagree.
Dana doesn't pay for the performance. he paid Toney for the ammount of Boxing fans who tuned in just to watch this fight.
This was not about the money (well, it was for Toney); this is about garner more fans. And if Toney delivered paying customers, Dana's objective was successfull.

And don't think for a second that I dislike Toney's being paid.
He is doing for the money the same way Shogun, Spider, Lesnar and every other fighter are

I don't understand why this unfriendliness towards Toney. he was never supposed to beat Randy, unless Randy played stupid and stood up with him.

Looks like Jim got banned. A lot of old threads got bumped up.

I don't blame toney for taking the money.

I do blame the UFC for paying him an outrageous fee. Toney would have done this for 100g's. Why so much. Toney had nothing to really offer at the table when the contract was negotiated. He is a has been in the boxing world let alone in the MMA world. If I was the fighters in the UFC I would start up a union and demand more money.

September 8, 2010  10:17 AM ET

Yeah I couldn't believe how much Toney got paid to get out muscled by Randy but 500k is nothing compare what he would make boxing, so to say he stole is too much when he is use to making millions of dollars. Bringing Toney in was a good move by Dana, it opens up a whole new topics of debates and now fighters like Manny Pac is saying he is willing to give it a try. Its just tells you how far and big the sport is when top tier boxers are even mentioning giving mma a try..... Did any one hear Dana white on the radio talk show claiming boxing is going to disappear, talk about middle finger in the air while grabbing your nads. lol

I agree with you on that!
This should happen if they ever want to get the sport better.

I would agree if not for the fact that Toney was weighing 20 more pounds than in his last pro boxing bout.

And he was already overweight and out of shape in that boxing fight.

September 8, 2010  10:29 AM ET

I would agree... if Toney hadn't come into his fight against Couture with 20 more pounds on him than when he last fought a pro boxing bout.

And he was already overweight in his last boxing fight.
