NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Paws of the Week [1]

Paws Up:

Oregon - took New Mexico to the woodshed in the season
..............opener (during the game, not after)
South Carolina/
Arizona - huge improvements after terrible bowl games last year
Jack Crowe & Craig Bohl - never heard of em? me neither. they're head coaches for Jacksonville State and North Dakota State

Paws Down:

Kansas - scoring 3 pts at home vs an FCS team is bad, m'kay?
Ole Miss - giving up 49 pts at home to an FCS team is bad, m'kay?

Paws Wavering:

USC's 'D' - it was a W, but it was ugly
Florida's 'O' - it was a W, but it was ugly
Oklahoma - got the W, but this almost turned into the Kansas & Ole Miss debacles - except they aren't top tier teams

Very impressive.

Going to be interesting when the rankings come out.....

Houston, Nevada, and Fresno looked good too. Although Fresno was the only other smaller school that beat a BCS program of note.

Paws up to both Boise State lines. With trenches like these, they will be untouchable in the WAC and probably roll over OR State, too.

September 7, 2010  10:13 AM ET

Paws Down: Frank Beamer. 2 minutes left. Boise St. out of timeouts. 3rd and long from around the 30. Run the ball and bleed the clock for 30 seconds and really put the pressure on Moore. Instead, a hokie roll out that goes incomplete. Poor special teams to follow.

Maybe the punt return to midfield happens either way, but I'd much rather have 60 seconds on that clock instead of 120.

September 7, 2010  10:55 AM ET

Paws Down to Les Miles too. His calling almost cost LSU the game against UNC.

September 7, 2010  10:59 AM ET

Serious Paws Up to June Jones and SMU for the way they're coming back after the Death Penalty-- they nearly pulled the upset over Texas Tech... and a 61 yard field goal with legs to spare?! Impressive...

September 7, 2010  11:10 AM ET

(Shameless Homer) Paws Up to Tyler Moeller, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week: six tackles one sack, a pass break-up, two TFLs and a forced fumble. Not bad for a guy who missed all of last season recovering from a fractured skull and serious brain injury...

Paws up to that kid who was out with cancer last year. Looks like he had a helluva game as well...

Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich: Players don't usually get helmet stickers for making five tackles, but simply setting foot on the field against Weber State was a victory for Herzlich, who defeated Ewing's Sarcoma cancer and then suffered a stress fracture in his foot. I should've included Herzlich on Saturday

Yep, Mark Herzlich.
I was thiiiis close to putting him on my list, but I wanted to limit each cat to 3.

Thanks for bringing it up for me.

There was even a 75 yr old nun at Notre Dame (huge BC rival) that reached out to Mark via letters while he was battling the cancer. (Apparently she hadn't missed a ND game in 60 yrs). The 2 became friends, and BC 'made arrangements' for her to come to the game Saturday. So she was standing on the sidelines for his comeback, of course missing the ND/Purdue game.

What a great story.

The blue turf is still butt-ugly, though.

The Eastern Washington Eagles just got a new red turf. Their 1st home game is this Sat.

Probably won't be televised, but maybe ESPN will show some highlights.

Week 1 records by conference--
.Big 12 3-0 vs AQ (8-1 vs non-AQ)
.....SEC 2-1 vs AQ (8-1 vs non-AQ)
...MWC 3-3 vs AQ (3-0 vs non-AQ)
.Big 10 2-2 vs AQ (7-0 vs non-AQ)
....ACC 0-1 vs AQ (10-1 vs non-AQ)
...WAC 2-3 vs AQ (3-0 vs non-AQ)
Pac-10 0-2 vs AQ (6-2 vs non-AQ)
...Big-E 0-2 vs AQ (4-2 vs non-AQ)

Paws Up to Big XII and MWC (SEC's results almost same as Big XII's, but Ole Miss debacle is worth extra demerits.)

Paws Down to Pac-10 and Big East.

Yeah, but it's just one week. What I found interesting is that AQ conferences vs other AQ teams resulted in 7 wins and 8 losses, while AQ vs non-AQ resulted in 37 wins and 7 losses.

Clearly within FBS there exists 2 tiers of talent. I'm just not sure where to put the MWC.

Appears that this is likely true for 2010. But I hate to make definitive conclusions based on one week.

How the heck did last year's Mr Football for Alabama end up at Jacksonville State?
No Bama, Auburn, Troy, or UAB

From what I watched Ole Miss should have recruited him as a starter.
