NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > ND's next coach?
September 12, 2010, 09:42 PM
Will Notre Dame finally go after a defensive minded head coach, when Kelly is sent packing? Their D is no better than it was under Weis. A fancy offense is nice, but you still need to outscore your opponent.

Also, do you think the kid that dropped the ball at the one yard line, while scoring, is still getting an earfull right now?

I think Kelly's got 5 years minimum at ND to do his thing. So talking about who will succeed him, is a bit ridiculous at this point.

I think Kelly is going to turn it around for the Neutered Dames (unfortunately). But he's going to need 2-3 years.

HAHA

I tend to agree that Kelly has several years of leeway at ND (barring a couple of 3-9 or 4-8 seasons, etc).

And as for last Sat, Michigan's offense is much improved. Denard Robinson looks ridiculously good.

But you are correct about the defensive part. Kelly needs to concentrate on defense. I don't understand these teams that spend all their time working on great offenses, yet ignore the def - and then expect to compete nationally (ie, TX Tech, Cincy, etc).

If ND can start playing great def and winning 8-10 games/year, top recruits will take notice. Then, some of the top QB's/WR's/RB's/linemen will head to ND (it is, afterall, still Notre Dame - every HS athlete in America has at least heard of them).

Then, maybe, they can get back into the picture nationally.

Kelly will be fine. Denard Robinson had a great game.

Patience, Papa, Patience. This thread reminds me of a cartoon from just after the USSR regime collapsed. A man was standing outside the grocery store, looking at his watch, and saying, "Man, Russia has had a free market economy now for 5 hours, but the shelves are still empty."
The fun thing about this point in the season is that anything can happen. After a monumental rebound against GA Tech, I suppose a few minds have changed in Lawrence, Kansas, about Turner Gill's capabilities as a coach, to name one example. Given the time, Coach Kelly may make winners or even champions out of the Irish again. After a grand total of two games, we just don't know.

GLS, ND is not my team anyways. It just amazes me how schools go after these offensive genuises that lack any defensive schemes. Yea, they are fun to watch as an outsider, but if it was my team, I'd be livid about giving up more points than scoring week after week.

The general rule for coaches, assuming they don't destroy the program or drop the team's record significantly, is that they have 5 years. This way, at the very least, in their last season at the school, they can prove what they can do with all of THEIR recrutis, the recruits said coach wanted. Notice, Charlie Weis was given 5 years. In his last, they went 6-6 with multiple dissapointing losses. I however am one to believe that Kelly will have a succesful stint with the Irish.

I belive that Lou Holtz after recieving the six million dollar man makeover will return minus the lisp to lead ND back into the national spotlight.

Whittingham should have got 5 years too.

so I'm guessing you also wanted Tressel fired for consistently having a lack of team speed in all those games Ohio State was blown out by SEC teams?

I will say this about Kelly tho:

That way he left his Cincy team, midseason - with their pants down and their egos blowin in the breeze, while he bolted to ND, shows what he really cares about.

Did that extra 3 weeks really make that big a difference?
What were the existing ND coaches doing last Dec?
They sure as heck weren't preparing for a bowl game.
They didn't have time to recruit?

I wonder what Kelly told his ND prospects when they asked about his leaving his Cincy team, coachless, 3 wks before the biggest game of their lives.
"Well, ya know, that was Cincinnati... Who cares about that school? .. I had to move on to greener pastures. This is Notre Dame. I would never do that to you!"

I'm sure that helped ND recruiting a whole bunch.

Yo, Kelly. Here's a unique idea:
Stay with your current team. Prepare for them for their bowl game. Call/text/tweet your ND prospects and say, "Hey, Mr. 4/5-Star. I'm preparing my Cincy team for their BCS bowl, so I don't have a lot of time to recruit you right now. But, come Jan, I will be the new coach at ND. And I would love to have you come play for us."

Don't you think that would have earned you tons of respect from your prospects?
And their parents?
And the rest of the country?

This is probably a rules infraction of some sort, but I agree with your point. How sad is it, though, that fans have to dream up scenarios where coaches display an iota of integrity?

I bet there are some more to respond to this thread, after the MSU win in OT last night!

I wonder-where are the domer fans that were screaming that anything less than a 10-2 prediction was an insult?
