NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Virginia Tech Fan Looking for Something to Root for This Season...
September 13, 2010, 11:45 AM
Alright, this past Saturday was easily the worst loss I've seen as a Hokie fan; yes, that includes the '98 loss to Temple. I could talk, at great length, about what is going wrong with them (particularly on offense), what they should do moving forward and what this likely means for the future... However, that is not the purpose of this thread. What I'm asking of you FN members, is to make arguments in favor of what team I should be rooting for for the remainder of this season. I will, of course, never turn my back on the Hokies, but I am now the Switzerland of college football fans. I am somewhat neutral, but do have some biases.

So , here you go. This is your opportunity to sound off about what outcome is best for NCAAF this season and why. The winner of the contest, if you will, gets a season-long rent-a-fan (me) and if you act now, I'll throw in a week long avatar change. GO ________!!! (???)

Most coaches claim their goal for the season is to win the conf.

VA Tech has yet to play an ACC game, so that goal is still intact.

Plus,
the ACC looks to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay open.

How open is the ACC again? (grin).

I say Pitt. WHy? Cause we got a QB named Tino, which is short for Santino. His father named him after James Caan's Godfather character......how freakin cool is that? So cheer for Pitt, it's an offer you can't refuse.

Still Go Hokies!!! Beemer and Foster will get their act together. The Hokies still have a shot for the ACC title and a BCS bowl. FSU, Miami and UVA all loss on the road. However, they need to play well against East Carolina next week.

The ACC is wide open still. No team has been impressive so far.

Which team that is still in the hunt for the crystal football should I be pulling for?

On the FCS side, you should really, really hope James Madison beats each of the rest of their opp's by about 90 pts.

LOL! As a USC fan, I will probably be starting a similar thread in the coming weeks. Here are the teams I'm considering for my 2010 bandwagon:

1) Alabama
Pros: The cream of the SEC, which really is is the cream of college football. Good fans on these boards. If you play your cards right, Bruce just might invite you to a game at Bryant-Denny. Also, chances are you can ride this bandwagon all the way to the NCG.
Cons: You have to sing Rammer Jammer to further humiliate teams like Georgia State.

2) Michigan
Pros: Up and coming team, yet still plenty of room on the bandwagon. Aside from Hammered, you and I can be founding members.
Cons: The wheels fell off this bandwagon just last year. Also, RichRod is the Gordon Gecko of college football.

3) Stanford
Pros: Braniacs playing in the Rose Bowl has a nice charm.
Cons: Have you seen the #$@#$% tree? and their band? Really high cringe factor when they get on TV.

4) Boise
Pros: "Up against the wall you BCS Pigs!" Plus, tnerb is the coolest guy on these boards.
Cons: Need to spend the rest of the season defending the nation's 112th ranked SOS.

As a USC fan, I'm hookin' my Pac-10 hopes to Oregon. They made me a believer Saturday. Stanford has looked good too, but I need to see more before they make the jump to NC material.

Also, I really can't imagine them getting through the Big 11 unscathed. ND may be fairly talented, but they're no tOSU. The Maize and Blue will just lead to further heartache.

You're asking for a season without heartaches. Does that mean you want to cheer for somebody who won't lose? My best advice is that you wait until early December and schedule a coming out party for January 15, 2011. In December, you will know which two teams will be in the NC Game, so you will have a month to prepare.
If it's Alabama versus Ohio State, for example, you can buy a houndstooth hat, a sweater vest, a good biography of the Bear (Alan Barra's "The Last Coach" is good) and Jim Dent's book "1968," about Woody's greatest team is also recommended. Whoever wins the BCS Title, you'll have already had time to brush up on their history, great players and coaches, etc. On January 15, you can start pontificating about the greatness of the current reigning National Champion, and show you are a true fan by your in-depth knowledge of the tradition associated with the program. The offseason lasts until August. Voila! Seven months a king and no heartache!

Or, to answer your question more as you intend: of these four, being as objective as possible, Alabama is the best choice. Oregon, Oklahoma and Ohio State are the three that really worry me. (or maybe I'm just O-phobic)

If I were you and looking for a non-SEC bandwagon to join, I'd be getting a mascot head with an orange bill and white feathers. If they go all the way and lose, nobody will lament, "not ANOTHER big game loss!"

September 13, 2010  02:09 PM ET

El diablo, I'm liking Stanford too. Here are some more choices to ponder

Navy
Pros: They run the option, like it's still 1975. Bell bottoms, Chevy Vegas and Frampton on vinyl are cool again. Whoa Nelly! Also, ain't nobody going to talk smack or dis you if the team loses.
Cons: Better than 50-50 chance of losing to Notre Dame this year. Smack, or even Rammer Jammer would be preferable to the cloying NBC announcers saying "Notre Dame has great respect for our armed forces" after a loss.

Oregon State
Pros: Mike Riley is a great coach and runs a pretty clean program. When his players do get into trouble, they do it with a sort of Animal House comic stupidity that makes you long for the days when you too could fire a bong, tap a keg and vomit on your girlfriend's shoes at the same time.
Cons: Disturbing possibility of winning the Pac10 title while losing to two non-AQ teams.

Nebraska
Pros: Endless fun showing last year's video of Suh throwing McCoy around like a crash test dummy and telling Texas fans, "and Crick is even better!" Since Nebraska is joining the Big10, all the tOSU and PSU fans on here will have your back when the Texas fans get thin-skinned about your posting the Suh video a few hundred times before October 16.
Cons: Probably looking for a new bandwagon team (and some new friends) on October 17.

They should probably be open to having more two sport athletes. Perhaps some of their basketball talent could help them out on the gridiron. While they're at it, maybe they could get a little coaching help...

I wanted him to post "waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy" again.
