NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > Time for a leadership change
September 19, 2010, 04:40 PM
I've been a Cowboy fan since watching them with my dad since the early 70s. Was there when they were "America's Team". This team no longer deserves that title.

Jason Garrett was a very good backup quarterback. He is not the Offensive Coordinator this team needs. His play calling is hurting the offense. He needs to step down.

Likewise, Wade Phillips needs to go. He instills no discipline in the team. He is not even a shadow when compared to his father. This is not the coach this team needs and every Cowboy fan knows he is only there because he is a "yes man" for Jerry Jones.

It has turned into a pain watching this team. With all the talent, their Owner/General Manager, Coach and Offensive Coordinator have really hampered what this team is capable of. The season is going to be a wash, so may as well get a new coaching crew in there to prepare for next season.

i relate to what you are saying... been a fan since the 70s too watching them w/ my dad. it's hard to see this team lose with the talent they have. there have been yrs when dallas had minimal talent and lost. this is not the same situation. there is no leader on this team... anywhere. JJ will need to decide if he wants to coach from the owner's box and lose or hire a real coach that can inspire, scare and motivate these rich players. it's early to call the season, but it doesn't look very promising and the schedule gets tougher later in the season. i think if things stay the course, we will see major changes on the sidelines.

i will add..... these players do not seem to have the heart, dedication, discipline or in some cases desire to win as did aikman, smith & irvin. it's a different generation of players and i just don't see this group accomplishing great things as they did in the 90s. just an observation.... and i hope i'm wrong!

Didn't see this coming... "Leadership" is what is lacking on the sidelines. From what I saw everyone either are pointing fingers, scratching their heads or showing their "taking a crap face" face... It's too easy to ponit fingers at the coaches, This is suppose to be Romo's team and he is seriously failing at leading the team!

Same. I'd be glad to have to retract my statements in late December, but I just don't see it. I haven't seen any portion of the Cowboys team step up since preseason. I can't blame the offensive miscues solely on Romo. The play calling is suspect. The defense has played sloppy and there are too many unnecessary penalties. I love the Cowboys, but it's time to call a spade a spade.

Sam, true. However, it's common knowledge that the calls come from Garrett. True, Romo has missed some passes, however when watching the previous two games, the play calls have come through as the failure. Not to mention the poor individual player decisions on the field (anyone remember the play just before halftime in week one?). Romo is the field general, but he is following instructions from the sideline.

romo is the field general, but his actions are anything but "general" like. he lacks the emotion and leadership of an aikman type QB. and with absolutely no leadership on the sidelines, this team is flying without a pilot.

Yeah, I have to agree that Romo does not appear to be much of a leader....too nice. I don't know how this team will get it together. Too bad, Let's hope they get it turned around quickly.

If there were any single area that was pulling their full weight (offense, defense, special teams, coaching), it would be easier to go from there. There appears to be muffled chaos, even with the star players in each area. I agree that Romo isn't fulfilling his position, however he can't be held accountable for the total failure in the other areas and this team doesn't appear to be excelling in any area.

September 19, 2010  08:06 PM ET

The whole team is in chaos. But, it's the coaches job of getting them ready to play. Garrett has not called any roll outs or boot legs or any plays Romo used to excel in. They abandoned the running game just as it was starting to click. What's wrong with this picture?

I've been fed up with these coaches for the past 2 years. They had their chance during the 13-3 season, and blew it then, and likely won't get another.

Lots of talent, scary talent. I think this team actually has more talent than last year. But they're kind of reminding me of the Marty Schottenheimer-led Chargers from 2002-2006.

IMO, the question comes down to "who else is out there?". Is there a better head coach available? The best ones (like Bill Belichick and Sean Payton) aren't available.

Taking the Chargers example a little further, Schottenheimer left and they had to settle with Norv Turner. How many people consider him an improvement? The Cowboys need to dump Wade Phillips. But it's not worth making the change unless there's a viable improvement available.

As a fan with maximum seniority (since 1960), I'll echo the sentiment:FIRE WADE PHILLIPS !!!!!Get either Cowher or Dungy; let the new head coach select his own assistants.

I'm not a fan of dragging coaches back out of retirement. I always question their heart - like how neither Jimmy Johnson nor Bill Parcells stuck it out long enough to win a Super Bowl in a 2nd city. The younger coaches tend to have more fire but they're hit or miss.

I'm a big fan of Rob Ryan and Leslie Frazier. I'm not too big on Brian Schottenheimer but a lot of people in the NFL are.

JRM, What makes you think either Cowher or Dungy would work for Jerry. They both saw what happened to Jimmy Johnson when he won the Super Bowls, Jerry didn't give Jimmy credit, he took it all for himself. It's Jerry's team and no real head coach will work under those rules.

Dungy won't come back out of retirement. Between his faith and the incident with his son, I think it would take a lot more than just a fat paycheck to bring him back.
