NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Rule Question

There was a weird play that took place in the IU game

IU was punting the ball away. The Akron returner waved for a fair catch, but another Akron player ran and caught the punt and took off. The refs immediately blew the play dead, but I thought signaling for a fair catch only ruled out that specific player who waved for it from returning the punt. Am I wrong? Have you seen this before?

looks like the officials are correct. The ball is dead as soon as anyone touches it

section 7

A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the
opportunity to advance the ball, and the ball is declared dead at the spot
of the catch or recovery
or at the spot of the signal if the catch precedes
the signal.
