NFL  > General NFL  > George Blanda - HOF '81 - RIP

I was just a kid when Mr. Blanda was winding down his storied career. He engineered five straight come-from-behind efforts for the Raiders in 1970 as both kicker and QB at age 43. Played some linebacker, some kick returner, and mainly kicker and QB. Bears, Colts (1 game?), Oilers, and Raiders. I just remember the latter Raiders years, and particularly remember that five game run--it was all over the newspaper in these parts.

26 seasons in the NFL, scored 2002 points. His accomplishments were too numerous to list, even for someone as verbose as me. He holds and has held numerous records (some have been surpassed since his 1976 retirement), and earned many distinctions

Signed his first contract with the Bears and George Halas in 1949, for $600.

He must have loved the game a lot. Lived a good long life, too. 83 years old, leaves his wife and 11 children.

I remember him playing as well, especially with the Oilers. I, too was a kid back then.

Watching him walk/run around on those stiff legs made me wonder how he could kick and punt. No Divas in his days. You played and you played hurt. Great Career, RIP.
